It has disrupted the beauty industry by creating a line of research-based, active ingredient-focused products at less than US$15 each.

Frankly speaking, when I first came across the products during a vacation in Australia 2 years ago, I was skeptical about the brand, products and effectiveness with their too-good-to-be-true pricing. Fast forward several months later, everyone seems to be raving on how good and affordable they are, with options that target every common skin care concern, so when Skinx reached out to me, to offer some products in return for an honest review, I chose The Ordinary. I just have to see how good is it, isn't it?

Packaging, Scent and Texture 

Housed in a 30ml minimalistic clear glass bottle with a dropper, the texture has a medium consistency that falls between a watery gel to a gel serum and applies with a sticky finishing. The clear scentless gel is recommended to be applied on damp skin so that it can glide easier and absorb faster. 

It takes about 5 minutes for the serum to sink in totally, leaving my skin very smooth. However, if you apply too much, skin would be extremely sticky and takes an even longer time to be absorbed so apply it sparingly.

How To Use : 

Apply a few drops over the entire face in the AM and PM before creams.

Performance and Ingredients

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 serum is a highly recommended product for those looking for hydration. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) can attract up to 1,000 times its weight in water and the molecular size of HA determines its depth of delivery in the skin.

With that in mind, The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 serum is formulated with low-, medium- and high-molecular weight HA, as well as a next-generation HA crosspolymer at a combined concentration of 2% for multi-depth hydration. This system is supported with the addition of Vitamin B5 which also enhances surface hydration to moisturize and soften fine lines and wrinkles.

I was elated to incorporate the serum into my skincare regime as I am constantly looking out for hydrating and nourishing products for my combination-dehydrated skin type. 

I usually apply The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 serum after Cosrx Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner and before Naruko Magnolia Brightening and Firming Lotion and/or Biotherm Life Plankton Mask and/or Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair either day/night or both. Skin is left feeling hydrated and very smooth without any flakiness during the course of usage.

The key ingredients are Sodium Hyaluronate (Hydration), Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer (Hydration) and Panthenol (Humectant). 

CosDNA has given the product a good safety rating which consists of a mixture of moisturisers and surfactants and the product scored 3.6 from 89 users on Makeupalley.

I purchased Kahina Giving Beauty 3 Basics Travel Kit from a local distributor sometime back and has been using the trio for more than a month. I had previously tried Kahina Giving Beauty Eye Serum, Kahina Giving Beauty 100% Organic Argan Oil and Kahina Giving Beauty Night Cream back in 2015 and results were pretty positive.

The outer packaging is created from 100% recycled paper and their bottles are made from high quality recyclable violet glass, which helps preserve products by blocking damaging light rays.

Unfortunately, there was a bad after-taste in this whole purchase experience - after almost depleting the cleanser with much left for the Argan Oil and Facial Lotion, I realized I had been using an expired set for the whole month which I would explain more at the end. However, I would still review the 3 products as what I have received. It probably also explained why I am not seeing the same result as I did, in 2015, for the Argan Oil.


Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser

Non-GMO, gluten free, vegan and certified Organic, Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser has also been named as one of the Top 10 Facial Washes by Spirituality and Health Magazine in 2016. A little goes a long way and Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser at 30ml has managed to last me for more than a month with once/twice daily usage.

Housed in a black opaque glass bottle with a pump dispenser ( that comes with its own cap ), Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser exudes a sturdy ( yet fragile because of the glass ) and luxurious vibe. 3 - 4 pumps are all I need for my face, both morning and night as a cleanser, after removing my make-up.

Difference between Skin Dryness and Dehydration

Dry and dehydrated skin might look the same on the surface. However it is important to make a distinction between the two. Dry skin is a skin type and describes skin that lacks oil ( inadequate oil or sebum production ). Dehydrated skin is a skin condition that describes skin that lacks water ( lack of moisture ) in the stratum corneum, which is the top layer of the skin. Some of us experience dry skin, but most of us experienced dehydrated skin at some point. Yes, even oily and combination skin types.

Dry VS Dehydrated Skin Test and Symptoms: 

Dry skin is a skin type. It is skin that lacks oil (your oil production is low) or lipids. Usually the cause of dry skin is genetics. But as we grow older our skin tends to get drier (even if it was oily and combination previously). Some of the most common symptoms would include increased sensitivity, tightness, itchiness and in some cases even flaking. Your skin may feel rough, appear dry and can be flaky.

Dehydrated skin is a condition. Fine lines and wrinkles are more prominent, skin will feel tight and uncomfortable and look dull or show accelerated signs of ageing, like sagging skin and deep wrinkles.
Pinch the skin on your cheek, if the lines become more prominent, you are dehydrated.

Causes of Dry skin VS Dehydrated skin : 

Dry skin can also be exacerbated by taking long hot showers or baths. The best way to treat dry skin is to add oils and oil-based products to your skincare routine.

Dehydrated skin can be caused by weather (both extreme cold and heat), heating and air conditioning, pollutants, travel, medication, diet and using unsuitable skincare products (for example using a cleanser that is too harsh for your skin).

UVA in sunlight can make the skin dehydrated, increase the ageing process, increase oxidants in the skin, dehydrate it and increase free radicals in the cells, damaging the skin.

Treatment for Dry skin VS Dehydrated skin : 

To treat dry skin, add oils and oil-based products to your skincare routine.

To treat dehydrated skin, drink more water although that alone will probably not be enough. One ingredient that has grown in popularity is hyaluronic acid (or Sodium Hyaluronate) as it is a humectant. Humectants are ingredients that will hold on water and prevent further transepidermal water loss. Sodium Hyaluronate (a salt form of hyaluronic acid) can hold 1000 times its weight in water. Other ingredients to look for would include glycerin and urea. You can follow it up with occlusive ingredients to lock in the moisture. When buying products look for oils, Propylene glycol and even silicones.

Moisturisers come in various forms that can be categorised according to their oil-water ratio. This means they can have either a higher oil or water content. For example, creams have higher oil content while gels are purely water-based. Identifying whether your skin is dry or dehydrated and what it needs is key. Is your skin oily and dehydrated? You should be boosting hydration with a gel-based moisturiser instead of a cream-based one, which contains more oil. That said, cream-based moisturisers are better for dry skin types.

Don't skip your moisturizer just because you have oily skin. For oily and combination skin types, choose a light-textured moisturizer for a grease-free feeling. If you have dry or ageing skin, opt for moisturizers with richer emollients to help with skin dryness.

Oily skins have to beware of dehydration as it is possible for oily skin to be dehydrated.
In fact, because women with dry skin tend to moisturize religiously, it is little wonder that dehydration is sometimes more serious in individuals with oily skin than those with dry skin. Skin dehydration may sometimes trigger excessive sebum production, resulting in an even oilier complexion, or even adult acne. That's why it's important not to skip your moisturizer even if you have oily skin type.

Use face masks. Treat your skin to deep moisturizing or intense hydrating masks frequently, approximately once or twice a week, or every 3-5 days. The essence or hydration ingredients work to give your skin an extra dose of much needed moisture, in addition to your regular moisturizer.

It is not tested on animals and uses environmentally-friendly packaging.There are no artificial colours or fragrances.

In the mornings, the subtle uplifting aroma of Grapefruit + Mandarin can be such a joy to perk you up. At the end of a busy work day, the soothing scent of Grapefruit + Mandarin can just help you to unwind.

The pump dispenser is easy to use and I usually use 4 pumps for my body. The lathering suds are moderate and provide a good scrubbing motion for the body. Initially, there was no greasy or drying after-feel but just when its nearing the end of contents ( left about 1/6 ), my skin started to feel alittle dry after every bath.

If not for the drying after-feel, it would make a good body wash for all body types.

I have a soft spot for Coffee Body Scrub and I got this 200g Model Co Tan-Tox Coffee Body Scrub pack from Chemist Warehouse Australia last year. It is a 100% natural exfoliating blend of pure Coffee granules and Sweet Almond Oil to exfoliate skin while stimulating the body for a supermodel glow and youthful appearance. The caffeine-powered polishing scrub buffs away dead skin and dry patches and stimulates the blood flow, helping to effectively assist problem areas such as cellulite, stretch marks and skin imperfections.

I decanted the contents into a tub with a spatula so that I can scoop it up easily for usage. Note that coffee scrubs tend to leave the bathroom floor and wall in a mess so do clean it up after every use.

I love the heavenly aroma of coffee in the shower because it just smells so good. I don't drink coffee, unless necessary but I love it for its ability to reduce cellulite when its in a scrub form. The added Vitamin E and Sweet Almond Oil in the formulation helps to deliver long-lasting hydration, leaving skin silky smooth, supple and nourished and ready to bare all!

Needless to say, it left my skin feeling smooth with a lingering coffee scent that goes away after awhile. There is a light layer of moisturising veil on skin, due to the inclusion of oil so there is no drying after-feel. However, unfortunately, I don't see a difference in my dimpled butt or cellulite laden back thighs but hopefully with regular usage, I will see a difference soon.

Review : KOSE Clear Turn White Mask ( Collagen )

Made in Japan, KOSE Clear Turn White Mask ( Collagen ) has 5 individually packed sheets in a box. Each sheet mask contains 22ml of essence and it just needs 10 minutes to weave its magic to make your skin look better.

I used 2 sheets when I was in Korea and another 3 sheets when I am back to Singapore, battling some roughness on my nose edges, caused by a glycolic mask. The mask comes with eye flaps which I really enjoy having over my eyes after a day of typing on the computer.

The mask is slightly cold which makes it a refreshing masking treat for both skin and eyes. However, the cutting is rather poor. It seems to be meant for those with smaller faces and sharper noses. On my cherubic face shape, the mask cannot even cover all edges of my face well, leaving gaps all around too. It also failed to cover my nose wings. Only the eye flaps cover well.

The mask also dries up pretty fast, so its just apt that the recommended time for usage is just 10 minutes. After a masking session, my skin looked less tired and more rested. Unfortunately, I did not see any brightening effects as claimed but my skin was slightly hydrated than before using the mask.

I am also glad that Kose has taken heed of customers' concerns as they have come up with a newer version with better fitting and higher serum in their masks. Leave a comment, if you have tried their masks!

What To Eat For Healthy Teeth?

Proper nutrition means eating a well-balanced diet so that your body can get the nutrients needed for good health and wellness. If your diet is low in the nutrients your body needs, your mouth may have a more difficult time resisting infection.

A poor diet can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Foods high in carbohydrates, sugars and starches greatly contribute to the production of plaque acids that attack the tooth enamel. Eventually these acids can cause tooth enamel to break down, forming a cavity.

Foods that contain sugars of any kind can contribute to tooth decay. Sugary foods, such as candy and soda, contribute to tooth decay. One of the first areas to decline when your diet is less than ideal is your oral health, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). Use this healthy foods list to improve your diet and the health of your mouth.


(1) Carrots/Apples/Celery  

Carrots

Carrots are crunchy and full of fiber. Eating a handful of raw carrots at the end of the meal increases saliva production in your mouth, which reduces your risk of cavities. Along with being high in fiber, carrots are a great source of vitamin A. Top a salad with a few slices of raw carrots, or enjoy some baby carrots on their own.

Apples

While the ADA recommends steering clear of most sweet foods, there are some exceptions. Fruits, such as apples, might be sweet, but they're also high in fiber and water. The action of eating an apple produces saliva in your mouth, which rinses away bacteria and food particles. The fibrous texture of the fruit also stimulates the gums. Pack either a whole apple or apple slices in your lunch to give your mouth a good scrubbing at the end of the meal.

Celery

Celery might get a bad reputation for being bland, watery and full of those pesky strings, but like carrots and apples, it acts a bit like a toothbrush, scraping food particles and bacteria away from your teeth. It's also a good source of vitamins A and C, two antioxidants that give the health of your gums a boost. Make celery even tastier by topping it with cream cheese.

(2) Cheese

Eating cheese raised the pH in the subjects' mouths and lowered their risk of tooth decay. It's thought that the chewing required to eat cheese increases saliva in the mouth. Nutrients found in cheese, like calcium, phosphorous, and protein, actually neutralize plaque, preventing cavities and strengthen tooth enamel. Eating a chunk of cheese after a sugary treat will neutralize the negative effects that sugar has on your teeth. Plus, cheese might also help remineralize tooth enamel, which means stronger teeth.

(3) Raisins

Naturally sweet, raisins don't contain sucrose, or table sugar. Sugar helps bacteria stick to the tooth surface, letting them produce plaque. Raisins are a source of phytochemicals, which may kill cavity-causing plaque bacteria. Some compounds in raisins also affect the growth of bacteria associated with gum disease.

(4) Black/Green Tea

Drinking green tea prevents bleeding gums and the catechins prevent plaque from forming on your pearly whites.

Compounds called polyphenols, found in black and green teas, slow the growth of bacteria associated with cavities and gum disease. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago found that people who rinsed their mouths with black tea for one minute, 10 times a day, had less plaque buildup on their teeth than people who rinsed their mouths with water. What's more, the size and stickness of their plaque was reduced. Tea undermines the ability of some bacteria to clump together with other bacteria.

In a 2010 study published in the Journal of Dental Research, black tea fights halitosis ( also known as bad breath ). Polyphenols suppress the genes of bacteria that control the production of smelly compounds in the mouth.

(5) Sugarless Gum

Pop a stick in your mouth after eating. Chewing boosts saliva secretion, clearing away some bacteria since bacteria rely on sucrose to produce plaque. Sugarless gum eemoves the acids created by plaque that eventually destroy tooth enamel and lead to cavities.

(6) Yogurt

Like cheese, yogurt is high in calcium and protein, which makes it a good pick for the strength and health of your teeth. The probiotics, or beneficial bacteria, found in yogurt also benefit your gums because the good bacteria crowd out bacteria that cause cavities. If you decide to add more yogurt to your diet, choose a plain variety with no added sugar.

(7) Leafy Greens

Leafy greens typically find their way onto any healthy foods list. They're full of vitamins and minerals while being low in calories. Leafy greens such as kale and spinach also promote oral health. They're high in calcium, which builds your teeth's enamel. They also contain folic acid, a type of B vitamin that has numerous health benefits, including possibly treating gum disease in pregnant women. If you have trouble getting leafy greens into your diet, add a handful of baby spinach to your next salad or throw some kale on a pizza. You can also try adding some greens to a smoothie.

(8) Almonds

Almonds are great for your teeth because they are a good source of calcium and protein while being low in sugar. Enjoy a quarter cup of almonds with your lunch. You can also add a handful to a salad or to a stir-fry dinner.

(9) Milk

In a study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association in July, it has been demonstrated that drinking a glass of milk after downing dry, sugar-sweetened Fruit Loops lowered levels of acid in the mouth more than drinking water or apple juice did.

Milk neutralizes some of the acid produced by plaque bacteria however, do note that adding milk to cereal doesn't have the same benefit as the milk becomes syrupy and sweet, which is bad for teeth. Drinking a glass of milk after eating a sweet dessert, like chocolate cake, may protect teeth, too. (If milk isn't handy, nibble on some post-dessert cheese.)

I have a positive impression of CNP Laboratory after using up CNP Laboratory Propolis Ampule Mist, Intensive Brightening Ampule + Power Brightening D-Day Mask and Dr Jet Mask in Singapore, so when I was in Seoul, I picked up CNP Laboratory Quick Fresh Vita Ampule Mist in Olive Young store. This product is a 2017 Best of Beauty award winner from Allure Korea.

Being a facial mist fan, I appreciate and really like their spray nozzle which allows ultra-fine mist particles to be dispensed evenly on skin. There is no messy globs of water on skin like what some facial mists do to your skin.

Use it as a quick pick-me-up, a refreshing toner or over make-up for that dewy look. I like that its refreshing and convenient.

Note that, the type of serum ( after the misting ) matters as the Quick Fresh Vita Ampule Mist does not hydrate well if I use it prior to applying InstaNatural Pro RadiantSkin Brightening Serum which tends to get slightly drying on skin.

While Quick Fresh Vita Ampule Mist contain ingredients like Niacinamide and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate to provide brightening and anti-aging benefits, but because they are found more in the bottom of the list, the concentration is therefore not high enough to give a big difference to skin.
