Nutritional and hormonal factors can affect hair colour as well as stress but, by and large, the predisposition to go grey earlier or later in life is genetic. The younger you start going grey, the quicker you're likely to go from having a full head of coloured hair to being grey all over. I had my first strand of white hair when I was just 15 so that explains that I would probably going to end up having greys much faster than peers of my age.
Its also been said that by the time a woman has a significant amount of grey on her head, she will look six years older. A man however, will only age by three. And that's why three of out of four women on the tonal-turn will look to hair dye in the first year of transition, whereas men will most likely embrace, ignore or change (31 per cent of chaps did however admit to plucking their first greys out completely). In general, men are more worried about balding than greying.
Grey hair is a combination of normally pigmented hairs interspersed with white ones. Hair turns white when the pigmentation cells responsible for colour (melanin) stop being produced.
According to a research study done in 2018, there have not been much promising or conclusive results with dermatology treatment options, vitamins and minerals in prescribed supplements and antioxidants added to shampoos, hence most individuals rely on hair colorants for restoration of hair color.
Commonly, natural hair dyes are prepared from Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), false daisy (Eclipta alba), and lotus tree (Zizyphus spina-christi) and Henna (Lawsonia alba). The advantage of natural hair dyes is that they are hypoallergenic and nontoxic.
Permanent hair dyes are most popular in the commercial market, however there is a risk of damage to the hair shaft due to oxidation with permanent hair dyes while temporary hair dyes do not penetrate the cuticle and wash out with shampooing. Do note that some individuals experience irritant dermatitis (commonly due to p-phenylenediamine) and hair loss due to hair coloring.
With that in mind, I decided to try out Kao Rerise Hair Colour which has a different ingredient list than a conventional hair dye as it is not exactly a hair dye but a hair colour product. My sister-in-law purchased it from Taiwan through a friend and passed it to my mother-in-law who deemed it to be too troublesome for frequent usage and passed it to me.
Packaging, Scent and Texture
Kao Rerise Hair Colour is said to regain black hair without damaging the hair shaft. It contains 100% naturally derived melanin sources for black hair where grey hair will gain natural black shades every time the product is used. It can also help to enhance hair quality, make hair tips more manageable, add bounce and resilience without causing damage to hair by repeated use.

It comes in an aerosol bottle, accompanied with 2 clear plastic gloves and a japanese instruction manual, however, the packaging instructions are all in chinese so you can still read it, if you understand chinese. The english version is here.
Even though it is stated as fragrance-free, I still detect a slight smell which is bearable, and the light brown cream contents, dispensed through the nozzle are easy to apply, like the conventional hair dyes in the market. Once it gets in contact with hair, the light brown colour will turn into dark brown and blend seamlessly with your hair.
How To Use
Recommended Steps :
1. After rinsing off shampoo, squeeze excess moisture from your hair.
2. Wearing gloves, take a ping pong ball-sized amount and apply from the hair roots.
(Recommended amount: About 3-4 ping pong balls for short hair)
3. Rinse thoroughly after leaving on for 5 minutes. After towel-drying, thoroughly blow-dry.
It is recommended to use the hair colour after shampoo-ing, wait for 5 minutes for the hair colour to settle in and then rinse with water.
I made a mistake during my first usage, I washed my hair with shampoo again, thinking that the hair colour might get onto my clothes and pillows, if I just rinse with water and later realized the hair colour doesn't "stick" around if I shampoo my hair.
For subsequent usages, I rinse with water only and the hair colour managed to cover about 10% of my greys. It wasn't obvious but you can gradually feel that your greys are less conspicuous as you use it more frequently.
I have to state that I did not follow the rules strictly - I actually use Kao Rerise Hair Colour on the following day after washing my hair, as I dislike rinsing my hair twice within 30 minutes - its too troublesome and tiring.
So the Rerise Hair Colour was used on dry hair, instead of damp hair as recommended. I am not sure if it affects the results but I did see an improvement to the covering of my greys with constant usage. I also leave it for 10 minutes, instead of the recommended 5 minutes.
As per instruction, even though you can use gloved hands to apply the hair colour, I also use a comb to "comb" it, so that I can get the colour into the specific areas like above the ears but do beware of the colour spurting over your mirror or tops as the hair can be clumpy when its wet with the Rerise Hair Colour.
Performance
I have used it for a total of 6 times on my shoulder length hair, where I use the hair colour on the grey portions only. Thankfully, it blends in well with my black-dark brown hair without looking like I had an obvious hair dye job on the roots. It covers about 10% - 15% each time so by the 6th time when the bottle has been depleted, 70% - 80% of my greys were covered.
Week 1 : 3 times
Week 2 : 1 time
Week 3 : 2 times
The instruction states that hair will return to its previous shade in 1-2 months after stopping usage. If you like the effects and intend to buy the Kao Rerise Hair Colour, keep the head dispenser and get the refills in Taiwan ( I am presuming that Taiwan sells the refills ).
My hair is also softer, smoother and more manageable as claimed. But unfortunately, my hair scalp itches slightly and I get dandruff ever since I started using Rerise Hair Colour. Hopefully, it would go away on its own, after I stopped using it.
Ingredients
According to Kao, the key ingredient, Dihydroxyindole (DHI), a precursor to the melanin responsible for black hair, used in Kao's Rerise brand hair color for gray hair, which uses 100% natural dye, was made possible by the marriage of Gekkeikan's biotechnical expertise, the product of a long tradition of sake brewing, with the bioproduction know-how Kao has developed in the manufacture of enzyme detergents and other commercial products.
Kao Rerise Hair Colour is also the winner for ADF Awards 2019 due to its excellent packaging.
The ingredient list does not contain the commonly used ingredients found in hair dye, namely ammonia, peroxide, p-phenylenediamine, diaminobenzene, toluene-2,5-diamine and resorcinol which are known to cause serious skin, eye and lung irritation, immunotoxicity, allergies, chemical burns and blistering to the scalp, hair breakage and loss and some forms of cancer. You can read more about the toxic chemicals in hair dyes here.
Conclusion
If you are looking for DIY hair colour product without the chemicals found in most hair dyes, then Kao Rerise Hair Colour would be a great choice, if you don't mind the hassle of using the product several times during the course of usage.
