Skinx contacted me recently and offered to send me some products in return for my honest reviews. Since I have been eyeing Pyunkang Yul products for a while now, it was apt that I chose this brand. I received a bottle of Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner + 1/3 Cotton Pad, together with some other products which I would review soon. Developed in 2016 by the Pyunkang Eastern Medicinal Clinic in South Korea which is renowned for treating lung and atopic skin disorders, Pyunkang Yul products are formulated with an ancient eastern medicinal philosophy, with the most minimal possible ingredients to achieve the maximum results. The products are made to bring skin back to its own natural balance so that it can get itself to be healthy and glowy!
I love brands like Pyunkang Yul which uses as few ingredients as possible, based on well formulated formula and priced reasonably so that any one can get good skin without spending too much.
Made in Korea, developed by dermatologists, and cruelty-free, Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner is a bouncy, medicinal essence-toner that hydrates and plumps the skin while combating sensitivity, troubles and imbalances. It contains 91.3% Milk Vecht Root Extract ( also known as Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract or " Huangqi " ), an oriental and nutritious medicine root that contains plenty of bioactive compounds such as saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides which is well known for its general tonic and skin reinforcing properties, as well as for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action.
Another research study has also indicated that Milk Vecht Root Extract is effective in treating Atopic Dermatitis.
The 100ml sized Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner ( also available in a 200ml size ) is housed in a royal blue plastic semi-transparent bottle ( which reminds me of doctors with their blue and white attire ) with a flick-top cap and labeling printed on traditional Korea traditional paper.
The essence toner lasted me for about 1 month of usage, with once/twice daily use. It has a essence-like texture which is less watery but more viscous in consistency. It is colour-less and scent-less and sinks into my combination-dehydration skin pretty fast, leaving a slightly tacky finishing. After about 5 minutes, the tacky finishing would disappear, leaving me with very soft and smooth skin.
How To Use Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner : I use it in a couple of ways as stated below
Hands :
Pour essence toner in my palms and pat it all over my face. Wait for 5 minutes and skin is instantly smoother, comforted and nourished, almost like wearing loose powder on my skin.
7 Skin Method :
Pour 2 drops of essence toner in my palms and pat it all over my face. For every layer, wait for 1 ~ 2 minutes before applying the next layer, just to ensure that its been absorbed. My face is bouncy, smooth and supple.
note : Skin is a korean term for toner. Read this to understand more about the method.
1/3 Cotton Pad ( swipe ) :
I poured the essence toner onto the 1/3 Cotton Pad and swipe it all over my face gently, like what I usually did for other branded toners. The difference is not too spectacular.
1/3 Cotton Pad ( swipe + dab ) :
I added another step after swiping the toner all over my face by doing some dabbing ( "slap" the damp cotton pad on skin ). Skin is well-hydrated and nourished and the effects lasted till the next wash. With consistent usage, the effects lasted longer.
1/3 Cotton Pad ( lotion mask ) :
Pour essence toner over 5 cotton pads and layer it on skin ( forehead, both cheeks, nose and chin ) like a toner mask, made famous by Chizu Saeki many years ago. Skin is smooth, soft and hydrated which lasted for almost a day. When I follow up with InstaNatural Pro-Radiant Skin Brightening Serum and Naruko Magnolia Brightening and Firming Lotion EX, my skin is unbelievably soft, smooth and supple with a dewy glow.
Skinx also recommends using the 1/3 Cotton Pads as a mask. Simply saturate 3 or more pads with your favorite liquid skincare product (we recommend the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner), then place on your forehead, cheeks, and other areas where you would like to mask. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes before removing.
Among all the 5 methods that I have tried, I prefer to use my hands when I am pressed for time, swipe and dab with cotton pad if I have a little more time and as a lotion mask at night, just to replenish the moisture back to my skin.
Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner is best used with its 1/3 Cotton Pad which is made of a blend of Pulp and Rayon. Each box contains 160 pieces and is said to absorb only 1/3 of toner as compared to general cotton pads, yet provide sufficient moisture on skin.
The cotton pad is very thin, does not pill or leave any unwanted fibers behind. It is slightly stiff and is not as as soft as regular cotton pads but holds the toner well enough, before releasing it back when pressed on skin.

Ever since incorporating Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner in my skincare regime, I noticed a reduction in sebum every morning, especially on my T-zone. My skin is also much softer, hydrated and no longer experience any rough and dehydrated texture. Flakiness, if any, would disappear, once I apply the essence toner.
Note that a zit appeared on my chin on the 4th day of usage although it also subsided pretty quickly after 2 days of using IOMA Day and Night Repair Gel on chin ( avoid applying essence toner on chin for that 2 days ). No zit surfaced thereafter.
In terms of ingredients, the essence toner contains a remarkable 7 ingredients in the list and there is no water in it. 91.3% of this toner is milk vecht root extract and the rest is full of skin-beneficial betaine and minerals. - who are battling dehydration
- who have sensitive skin
- who need soothing products
- who like products with very few ingredients
Honestly speaking, Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner is an excellent toner for everyone because of its effaciacy, affordability and clean ingredients. I can't really find any fault with it. It is just too good to not include in your skincare regime.
