Kahina Giving Beauty 3 Basics Travel Kit ( Cleanser, Argan Oil & Facial Lotion ) Review

I purchased Kahina Giving Beauty 3 Basics Travel Kit from a local distributor sometime back and has been using the trio for more than a month. I had previously tried Kahina Giving Beauty Eye Serum, Kahina Giving Beauty 100% Organic Argan Oil and Kahina Giving Beauty Night Cream back in 2015 and results were pretty positive.

According to their website, Kahina Giving Beauty uses innovative and proven-effective skin care solutions, taking inspiration from Morocco to combine ancient traditions with modern science. Native Moroccan ingredients are combined with high quality natural ingredients carefully sourced from around the world and formulated in a state-of-the-art facility in the US. It uses the highest quality argan oil as their core ingredient and the brand is ECO CERT certified and Leaping Bunny Certified.

The outer packaging is created from 100% recycled paper and their bottles are made from high quality recyclable violet glass, which helps preserve products by blocking damaging light rays.

Kahina Giving Beauty donates 1% of its annual revenue to organizations that directly benefit the women in the South of Morocco and their families and has been giving back since 2009. You can read more about it here.

Unfortunately, there was a bad after-taste in this whole purchase experience - after almost depleting the cleanser with much left for the Argan Oil and Facial Lotion, I realized I had been using an expired set for the whole month which I would explain more at the end. However, I would still review the 3 products as what I have received. It probably also explained why I am not seeing the same result as I did, in 2015, for the Argan Oil.

Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser

Non-GMO, gluten free, vegan and certified Organic, Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser has also been named as one of the Top 10 Facial Washes by Spirituality and Health Magazine in 2016. A little goes a long way and Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser at 30ml has managed to last me for more than a month with once/twice daily usage.

Housed in a black opaque glass bottle with a pump dispenser ( that comes with its own cap ), Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser exudes a sturdy ( yet fragile because of the glass ) and luxurious vibe. 3 - 4 pumps are all I need for my face, both morning and night as a cleanser, after removing my make-up.

Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser Texture
The original colour should be milky white

It is naturally scented with neroli essential oils extracted from orange flower blossoms and herbaceous Moroccan blue tansy which actually took me awhile to adjust, as I did not quite like it initially but now I am so used to it that it doesn't really bother me anymore. The texture is like a watery serum that glides on skin so very gently that you almost wonder if it would do its job well. The whole cleansing experience is gentle, calming and mild that I would highly recommend it to any one with sensitive skin.

This aloe vera-based cleanser is said to exfoliate and brighten skin but I can't really tell. I don't "feel" any exfoliation or "brighter" skin after each cleanse. It feels and works like a good cleanser for sensitive skin without any tight or greasy after-feel which is a winning point for me.

Unfortunately, the thin suction is unable to pump out the contents after it is nearly depleting ( left about 1/6 in the 30ml bottle ) so I have to open up the bottle and pour it directly onto my palms for further usage.

Please note that the texture for my cleanser differed from others. While others claimed theirs to be like a milky lotion, mine is like a watery yellow serum and I would explain more in the summary.

The ingredient list is also slightly different from the one on their website. Most ingredients remained largely the same but the concentration has been changed as they were not in the same order in the list. An example is Blue Tansy which is lower in concentration in the latest formula and there is addition of Linalool and Limonene which may cause some allergic reactions to some people.

Was there information stating somewhere that the formula has changed slightly? If not, everyone would have presume it to be the same.

Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil

Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil is the 2nd product in the travel kit which I had purchased. I had previously tried the Argan Oil in 2015 with positive results but did not experience the same result now.

The indigenous Berber women of Morocco have used argan oil in their beauty rituals for centuries to protect their skin from the harsh desert conditions. This multipurpose oil from the nut of the argan tree contains powerful antioxidants and high concentrations of nutrients and essential fatty acids that are the building blocks of healthy skin. All Kahina products are made with high concentrations of the highest quality certified organic argan oil and other antioxidant-rich byproducts of the argan tree in combination with the highest quality natural ingredients nature has to offer from around the world. The argan nuts are cracked by hand using centuries-old techniques by Berber women in Morocco’s argan region. The oil is then cold-pressed using modern equipment to preserve the integrity of the oil.

The raw argan oil found in Kahina Giving Beauty products is composed of a high percentage of vitamin E (more than three times as much as olive oil) and 80% fatty acids, including hard to obtain Omega 6 and Omega 9 acids. Other components key to promoting skin health include antioxidant polyphenols, phytosterol compounds, and squalene.

The antioxidants and fatty acids in argan oil work together to help stop inflammation and to protect and maintain skin elasticity, smoothness and radiance. Phytosterols help strengthen the protective skin barrier and are also antiseptic. Squalene is a lipid that is naturally present in, and extremely compatible with, our own skin, which is why argan oil is so easily absorbed. Our body’s own squalene production declines starting at the age of 20 and replenishing helps skin retain its moisture, as well as supporting cell regeneration and oxygenation.

Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil Texture

Non-GMO, gluten free, vegan, fair trade and Certified Organic, Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil is one of the Editor Choice winners of the 2018 Beauty Shortlist Award. At 30ml, a little goes a long way as I only use 2 drops each time, any much more than that would cause my skin to look greasy and look like an oily wok.

This multipurpose oil can also be used as a body oil, on hair to restore shine and relieve frizz, on hands and cuticles to treat everyday dryness and to treat skin conditions naturally.

Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil has a lightweight texture and you can layer it with more drops to your desired consistency. It is bottled in a black opaque glass bottle with a dropper dispenser. 2 drops are enough for my combination-dehydrated skin type and I usually use it directly after cleansing with Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Cleanser and misting my skin with Thank You Farmer True Water Vital Mist or Cosrx Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner.

Unfortunately, my skin is slightly sensitive to it, for each time, after application, the left side of my jaws and cheeks would itch for several minutes before it subsided. Please note that there was no allergic reaction when I used it way back in 2015 and result then was positive than now.

Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil scored 4.2 from 23 users on Makeupalley.

Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Lotion

Non-GMO, gluten free, contains beeswax and certified Natural, Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Lotion has also been named as one of Elle France "Best Performing Moisturizers " in 2019.

It is the last product of the travel set I owned and the last step of my skincare regime, with almost the same scent as the cleanser which I do not quite fancy but has adjusted to it.

The 30ml travel size is housed in the same black opaque bottle with a pump dispenser that has its own cap. 2- 3 pumps are usually what I need for day/night application and a little goes a long way.

The original colour should be white

The creamy texture is emollient and provides that slippery feel on skin. However, note that the colour for my product is not the same as others. While others' lotion is white in colour, mine is slightly yellow. I will explain more in the summary.

In terms of ingredients for Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Lotion, they are slightly different from the new formula, although it was not stated elsewhere that the formula has changed, except to mention that raspberry oil was added. However, there were more changes than that - selected ingredients were removed and replaced while some similar ingredients were higher/lower in concentration.

When I first started using the trio of products, my skin felt and looked smoother with a silky texture. It was simply amazing! I was elated and thought I found my holy grail products.

However, after I stopped using it for several days, and resumed back, my skin was extremely greasy. I tried using the argan oil and facial lotion separately but I still can't get back that smooth and silky feel like before.

I would then turn to my bag of arsenal to get that smooth skin. Every time my skin is rough, I would alternate between applying Andalou Naturals Pumpkin Honey Glycolic Mask and Handmade Heroes Beauty Warrior Hibiscus Vitamin C Boost Face Mask, followed by a hydrating sheet mask. It worked most of the times and lasted for about 3 days and I would then repeat the process.

Summary

Upon reading the rave reviews from others, I noticed that the colour of my products differed from others and that is when I wrote in to Kahina Giving.

With the Lot Number provided, I was informed that mine was an expired set and that I should request for a refund from where I purchased it from. It was written in a business-like manner from the founder herself, without any thank you ( for purchase ), apologies ( for the experience ) or concerns about my allergies, if any. While I wasn't expecting any, in the first place, I thought it would be good, if the founder can do so, after all, I placed an order because I trusted her products.

The colour for both cleanser and facial lotion was different. The argan oil caused a slight reaction on my skin which wasn't there when I used it previously in 2015. But I am really glad that there was no serious allergy to my skin, despite using all 3 products for almost a month and almost depleting the cleanser.

I am very particular when it comes to skincare, and that is why I prefer to buy from stores, online retailers, distributors and resellers and not from a user. I have not met with any issue so far, until now. I would also check for manufacturing/ expiry dates once I received my skincare products but on Kahina Giving products, there was no such information, except for a tiny Lot number. This proved to be a daunting task for distributors, isn't it? And when I enquire about it, Katharine from Kahina Giving told me that the only way to know the production/expiry dates is to write in to them. Hmmm...

Refund was not the first thing on my mind when I first wrote in to Kahina Giving, even though $99 was not cheap, for a travel kit. I just wanted to know why is my product different from others and if I can continue using it - I owe an explanation to readers who read my reviews. It was never my intention to stir up any trouble but now, knowing that I have been using an expired product, it left a very bad taste in my mouth. If based on the lot number, this set was produced in 2013 and stay fresh for about 2 ~ 2.5 years according to Kahina Giving.

How to check the Lot Number :
LOT1301TB : 2013 January Travel Basics

note : the number was never explicitly explained to me, but based on the clarification, this was what I deduced from the lot number on my product. I could be wrong though.

After I wrote in to the local distributor, she took care to explain to me that they store their products in cool temperature, test products randomly and dispose those which had turned bad. And they are willing to give me a credit of my purchase amount to purchase other products in the store. She was sincere and apologetic about it.

Have you met with such an issue before? What do you do?
