Review : Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution

Product Description
A rich, creamy cleanser that gently lifts impurities from dry, sensitive skin while deep-conditioning and soothing irritation. Contains no artificial fragrance or color.

Delicately cleanses dry skin without disrupting its natural moisture balance. Moisturizing safflower oil, hops and rosemary deliver moisture where you need it most, while lemon and pine cone extracts rinse away dirt without any dulling residue. Ideal for dry to ultra-dry skin conditions

Benefits :
Natural Safflower Oil : softens and conditions skin.
Antioxidant Vitamins E and C : smooth and condition the skin.
Mild astringents, extracts of Rosemary and Lemon : refresh tired skin.

I have been looking around for a suitable cleanser, ever since Dermalogica changed its formula for the entire Ultracalming line, including my holy grail cleanser for the past 5 years. Most cleansers on the market do not suit my skin type, leaving my skin tight and dry most of the time. I was so relieved and happy when I found the Ultracalming Cleanser but good times never last.

I was recommended to use this cleanser, to replace the Ultracalming Cleanser so I went to Compass Point Aster Spring to pick up a sachet to try it out. It allowed me 4 usages.

The essential cleansing solution is a milky white lotion-type that is mild and gentle. It can also be used to remove light make-up though I used it more as a cleanser than as a make-up remover. It does not foam and if you use it on very wet face, you can hardly feel the cleanser doing its job as its so diluted and runny once it touches water.

While the skin is left feeling soft and supple, there is a slight redness on the sides of the nose and on the chin area. Overall, I feel that there is a lack of moisture on my face. I still like the Ultracalming Cleanser with the original formula and nothing beats that.

It scored a 3.7 from 51 users on Makeupalley. In terms of ingredients, it does contain Benzophenone-4 which is considered as an irritant, however the concentration is low in this product.

It is definitely cheaper buying Dermalogica products from the USA than to get it in Singapore.

Ingredients :
Water, Caprylic/capric Triglyceride, Butylene Glycol, Carthamus Tinctorius (safflower) Seed Oil, PEG-8, Polysorbate 60, Cetyl Alcohol, Extracts Of: Citrus Aurantium Amara (bitter Orange) Flower, Humulus Lupulus (hops), Rosmarinus Officinalis (rosemary) Leaf, Equisetum Arvense, Pinus Sylvestris Cone, Citrus Medica Limonum (lemon) Fruit; Sorbitan Stearate, Ricinoleth-40, Beeswax (cera Alba), Ceresin, Benzyl Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Benzethonium Chloride, Dehydroacetic Acid, Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Aminomethyl Propanol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Propylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Carbomer, Disodium EDTA, Benzophenone-4.

Korres Wild Rose Moisturiser is widely popular. If you heard of Korres, you are bound to hear of this moisturiser. I picked up the local magazine, purely just for this moisturiser which is a 10ml GWP.

Not a fan of heavy texture, I was not too keen to get the retail size without trying it so the 10ml size was a good trial period for me. I am dismayed to find out that it contains alcohol.

Recommended for normal to dry skin, I have been using the moisturiser as a daily day moisturiser for the past 3 weeks even though I have normal to combination skin with surface dehydration. The product is lightly scented, with a white thick creamy texture. I do find it difficult to glide on dry skin so I prefer to spritz my skin with Avene Thermal spray, prior to using it. Moisturiser, in general absorbs better in damp skin. Skin feels soft, smooth and supple but still, its not hydrating enough for me under the daily air-conditioned office I am working in. So I topped it up, with a Naruko hydrating serum before the moisturiser.

I like having Vitamin C in my skincare products so I was really looking forward to using this famed moisturiser however it did not really meet my expectations, in terms of hydrating and brightening effects. Other than that, it also contains alcohol as well as giving the face a "shiny" look after application though it can be rectified with the correct make-up products. The added SPF 6 is a very slight bonus but not enough to protect our skin in our humid weather. In fact, I do think SPF 6 is a joke.

I have fairly sensitive skin with a tendency to turn red under extreme weather conditions and this product made my cheeks turned red during the very first inital usage but disappeared with time and never come back.

While its commendable that it contains 85.1% natural contents and does not include petrochemicals, mineral oil, silicones, parabens, sulphates, or synthetic dyes, it contains alcohol.

On Makeupalley, the product scored 3.8 from 172 users.

Review : Shu Uemura Whitefficient Clear Brightening Gentle Cleansing Oil

Product Description
For dull skin complexion, removing melanin-filled dead cells is the first step in brightening care. Fortified with the Ultimate Removal System, our latest development, the lightly textured formula effectively removes accumulated melanin and heavy make-up.
Empowered with our advanced brightening technology this brightening cleansing oil contains an innovative combination of Mito-White Complex and Vitamin C to help prevent the accumulation of melanin deep within. day-after-day, the skin looks clarified and brightened with an even-toned complexion.

Benefits
Pure Vitamin C : limits melanin production. SMA is a polymer designed to protect Pure Vitamin C from oxidation without blocking its strong brightening activity.
Ceramide White : promotes depigment effect for brightness
Prune Extract : limits melanin transfer from the lower layer of the epidermis to the surface with its unique "Melanin Diet" action
Algae White : supports mitochondrial activity that is required for the newborn skin cells.
Fruit Acid Mix : removes melanin-containing dead surface cells

Shu Uemura is famed for their cleansing oils. I have previously reviewed the enriched version meant for dry conditions and this review is based on the brightening cleansing oil. Launched earlier this year, the brightening cleansing oil retails at S$155 for 450ml, S$58 for 150ml

I received 2 sachets from my sister who received it, as part of her birthday treats from Tangs. It gave me 4 usages and there has not been any breakouts so far. Its part of my double-cleansing routine and I don't use it near the eyes as I have kept a separate eye make-up remover for that.

Similar to most cleansing oils, you use it on dry hands and smooth over dry face, before wetting it to emulsify the cleansing oil and then rinse thoroughly with water. It is lightly scented and is acceptable for my standards.

It manages to cleanse all my face make-up well and I do like this product as a make-up remover, except for having contain mineral oil. It leaves the skin clean, soft and smooth. Due to the short time of usage, its too early to see any brightening effects on the skin.

The first ingredient in Shu Uemura cleansing oil is mineral oil ( aka paraffinum liquidum ). There have been conflicting theories on how mineral oil is good for the skin. You can read about the good stuff here and the bad stuff here and here.

Review : Korres Japanese Rose Shower Gel

Product Description
Creamy-foam showergel with a quantifiable, lasting moisturising effect. Wheat proteins form protective film on the skin, maintaining its natural moisture level. Active Aloe®, rich in vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and antioxidant enzymes, enhances the skin’s immune system. Furthermore, due to
its ability to stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis, Active Aloe® helps reduce the visible signs of ageing.

Benefits :
Active Aloe - stimulates collagen and elastin to reduce the visible signs of aging.
Wheat Proteins - form a protective shield to help maintain skin’s ideal moisture level.
Vitamins C, E and Zinc - enhance the natural immune system of the skin.

I purchased this from Luxola, the newest beauty and bath addition to the online scene. It was virtually a fuss-free shopping experience and you get your products the following day.

This Japanese Rose shower gel is my first product from the brand. I had heard good things about the brand and so I thought I would start off with their shower gel since there was a 20% discount storewide. Who can resist the lure of roses? It reminds one of romantic days with lacy and frilly dresses.

Made in Greece, this 250ml bottle costs me $14. It has a flick-top cap opening where the light yellow shower gel flows out easily. It has a light fresh scent of rose which reminded me of rose bundung drink. It cleanses the body well with very rich lathering, leaving a slight silky layer of film on the body which is hardly noticeable. It leaves the skin smooth.

Made of 82.9% natural contents., this shower gel is touted to be WITHOUT:- Parabens- Synthetic Fragrances- Petrochemicals-Phthalates- GMOs- Triclosan. I would have thought that sodium laureth sulfate, (a surfactant)  would be included in the NO list but I am surprised that it is the 2nd ingredient on the ingredient list.
SLS is typically found in foaming products and is known to dry out the skin.

The list of NO xxx is so misleading because there is a mixture of NO and YES and one really need to read it carefully to discern the difference. Still, Korres is worth a round of applause for being upfront of its ingredients.

Ingredients :
Aqua (Water), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate,Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Glyceryl Oleate, Parfum (Fragrance), Phenoxyethanol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Althaea Officinalis Root Extract, Arginine, Benzyl Alcohol, Castoryl Maleate,Citronellol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Helichrysum Arenarium Flower Extract, Hydrolyzed Wheat Gluten, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde, Lactic Acid, Limonene, Polyquaternium-7, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Sodium Gluconate, Tocopherol

How to look good in every photo

Look to your right
A US study conducted by Wake Forest University has revealed that the left side of the face is more attractive than the right, apparently due to the fact that this side of the face shows more emotion. To capture the perfect profile picture, look slightly to the right to reveal your ‘best’ side. This can also help to give the illusion of a slimmer face for those with rounder faces.

Choose your makeup carefully
For the perfect photo-ready appearance, make sure you avoid light reflective or mineral foundations containing high amounts of titanium dioxide (a reflective pigment). Although these foundations are great for an everyday luminous look, the flash of a camera can quickly transform your dewy complexion to a ghostly white one as the white light reflects back from the camera. Once you have applied a suitable foundation, finish your look with some face powder to help eliminate shine.

Accentuate your best features
To look your sparkling best in photos, make sure you emphasise your favourite features to make them stand out in your snapshot. Try playing up your eyes with some eyeliner or false lashes. Alternatively, perk up your pout with some bright lipstick. Also, make the most of your best body features with an outfit that complements your shape and colouring.

Look away from the lens
Nobody wants glaring red or half-shut eyes ruining an otherwise great photo, so make sure you avoid this by focusing your eyes just slightly above or below the lens. Looking directly at the lens causes light to flash off the retina, leading to the red eye effect. Looking slightly away from the camera will also reduce the risk of those mid-blink shots.

Avoid “red eye” shots
As “red eye” in photographs is caused by light reflecting off the back of the eye, those with large pupils are more likely to suffer from this pesky problem. If averting your gaze from the camera is not doing the trick, another tip for alleviating the red eye effect is to make sure photos are taken in a well lit environment or to look at a bright light just prior to the photograph being taken to make your pupils smaller.

Banish the double chin
There’s nothing worse than spotting a picture of yourself sporting two chins where you previously only had one, yet sadly this happens to the best of us. To avoid the appearance of a double chin in photographs, make sure that the camera is just above or at your eye level. Also, try tilting your head up and jutting your jaw out slightly – you may want to practice this one first in the mirror to stay looking natural!

Avoid direct light
It may not always be possible to control the lighting for your photographs and, unless you happen to be a professional model, you most likely won’t have someone on hand to make sure it’s just right. However, it is worth bearing in mind that direct light from above can cast shadows on your face and accentuate the appearance of under-eye shadows. Opt for areas with softer lighting or head to the shade if outdoors.

Pose like a pro
If you’re posing for a full body shot, try the classic celeb pose of turning your body three quarters of the way towards the camera, with one shoulder closer to the camera and one foot in front of the other. This will make you body appear slimmer than if you were facing the camera face on. Try keeping your back straight with your shoulders back and your stomach in .

Master the perfect smile
Rather than forcing a grin, think about something that makes you happy for a more natural smile. You may also want to perfect your personal smile to work with your features. For instance, a beaming smile works great for those with good teeth, while a more relaxed half smile will make small eyes appear larger and lips appear fuller.

Practice your pose
If you’re really keen to capture the perfect photo, the best thing you can do is practice beforehand. Experiment with different face and body angles, smiles and facial expressions to find what works for you, either in front of the mirror or with your own camera. Once you have discovered which looks you like best, you are ready to unleash them at every photo opportunity, making sure you look perfect each time.

[ Review ] : Dermalogica Precleanse

[ Post updated on 20 March 2024 ]

Product Description
Dermalogica Precleanse Cleansing Oil is a deep-cleansing oil that melts make-up and impurities from skin. Achieve ultra clean and healthy-looking skin with the Double Cleanse regimen that begins with PreCleanse. Thoroughly melt away layers of excess sebum (oil), sunscreen, waterproof make-up, environmental pollutants and residual products that build up on skin throughout the day with skin-fortifying Borage Seed, Kukui and Apricot oils. Ideal even for oily skin conditions.

Benefits :
- Removes oils without clogging pores.
- Conditioning essential fatty acids nourish skin.

How To Use :
1) Dispense into dry hands.
2) Massage over dry face and eyes to dissolve surface oil and dirt.
3) Concentrate on areas of congestion or stubborn debris.
4) Wet hands and continue massaging to
 create a light, milky emulsion.
5) Rinse with lukewarm water.

I tried Dermalogica Precleanse Cleansing Oil back in 2012 during my facials as the beautician always use it on me, and I still remembered how good it felt then.

Fast forward to March 2024, I redeemed 3 bottles of Dermalogica Precleanse Cleansing Oil with my facial package credits. The scent of lavender and mandarin orange has been both uplifting and calming, something I really look forward to.

Formulated without artificial fragrances or colours, and certified cruelty-free, gluten-free and vegan, Dermalogica PreCleanse is professional-grade skin care by The International Dermal Institute where it helps to dissolve stubborn buildup as it contains molecules that attach to make-up, making it easier to remove thoroughly.

The product acts as an oil-based make-up remover where you are supposed to massage the contents on dry face, add water to transform this hydrophilic formula into a milky emulsion and finally rinse off with warm water. The oil-based texture lifts up all traces of my make-up easily, leaving the skin clean and clear without any tight feeling. It is gentle, soothing and does not irritate my skin.

Review : Bioessence Bird Nest Bio-energy Firm and Brighten Eye Cream SPF15

Product Description
Bio-Essence Bird's Nest Bio-Energy Firm and Brighten Eye Cream SPF 15 comes with an unique applicator for firming and brightening eye contour. Its Bio-Energy ingredient increases metabolism and improves blood and oxygen circulation helping to reduce melanin precipitate and eliminates dark circles.

Benefits :
- Eliminates wrinkles and crow's feet
- Firms and lifts eye contours
- Treats dark circles
- Removes eye bags

I received 2 complimentary 3ml samples last month and have been using it every morning on a daily basis. It has an odd scent but nothing foul. Light yellow in colour, it is very lightweight in texture, despite the SPF15 component in the product. Its not heavy or greasy and sinks into my dry undereye area fast. I would peg it as a gel, rather than a cream.

I followed the recommended method of massaging the cream in an outwards direction but without the massaging applicator since its just a sample size. There is no visible result after a month of using it.

Review : Aveda Be Curly Shampoo

Product Description

Gentle cleansing enhances curl, combats frizz and boosts shine on curly or wavy hair. Part of our 4-step curl perfecting system that dramatically reduces frizz and defines curl up to 57%*  wheat protein and organic aloe blend expands when hair is wet and retracts when dry to enhance curl or wave. A refreshing citrus aroma with certified organic lime, lemon, bergamot, orange and other pure plant and flower essences.

A friend of mine, bought the largest size of the Aveda shampoo and decant some of the contents into a 30ml bottle for me. Aveda is an expensive brand, so I was glad that I got the chance to try out their products.

I permed my hair back in December last year and cut my hair earlier this month, so I was left with light curls now. This shampoo smells really nice, with a mixture of different essential oils.

The shampoo, beige in colour and creamy and thick in texture provides a good lathering though I am used to runnier texture with natural formulations. It provides a better definition to my light curls and making my hair softer. However, with extended use, my scalp gets itchy and dandruff starts to appear. I can't justify the price for this.

It scoreed 3.5 from 14 users on Makeupalley

Review : Shiseido Tsubaki Water (Shining)

Tsubaki "Water" is a leave-in spray moisturizer/conditioner that will not only get rid of tangles, but will also add a beautiful shine to your hair with daily usage.

  • Also contains Hyaluronic Acid derivative to lock in moisture from roots to tips - great for split ends!
  • Non-greasy formula. It protects against harmful UV-rays.

I picked up the travel set kit, consisting of its shampoo, conditioner and this leave-in spray in Japan sometime back. I like everything about this Tsubaki Water, from its packaging right down to its performance.

It is housed in an attractive red aerosol-like bottle, with a good nozzle spray that dispenses powerful spritz without needing much force. I like the grip of the portable size bottle as well as the sturdy nozzle spray. I used it every morning to wet my hair, before applying the styling spray for the curls.

It moisturises the hair, leaving it soft, smooth and smelling nice. My hair is much manageable, with less tangled knots.

Ingredients :
hydroxyethyl uera, lactic acid, propyltrimonium chloride acrylamide / dimethylacrylamkide copolymer, sodium acetylated hyaluronate, camellia reticulata seed oil, rosa roxburghi fruit extract, sorbitol, PPG-13 decyltetradeceth-24, PPG-20 decyltetradeceth-10, ethylhexylmethoxycinnamate, isopropyl alchohol, EDTA-2Na, butyl methoxydibenziylmethane, ammonium lactate, BG, tocopherol, BHT, citric acid, phenoxyethanol, fragrance.

Review : Sexylook Ultra Whitening Duo Lifting Mask (Pearl Barley + Sodium Hyaluronate)

Product Description
Simply Sexy Look Ultra Whitening Mask fits your face shape perfectly. It helps to firm and lift your skin.

Benefits :
Brighten: tranexamic acid, ellagic acid, Pearl Barley, pearl extract, resveratrol
Moisture: Rose water, small molecule hyaluronic acid
Elasticity: smooth wrinkle, elastin, collagen

Sexylook is touted to be the best-selling 3D mask in Taiwan and it has also been featured in "Nu Ren Wo Zui Da" beauty show.
I used the last sheet which my mum bought and store in the fridge. Personally, I never think of buying this, because the name sounds kind of bimbotic and silly.
The material of the mask is thick and sturdy, with a fruity scent. It has the same ear and neck hooks like Lovemore sheet masks. The cutting for the eye area is able to reach the undereye area which I like, so that it can doubled up as an eye mask too. You can check out their range of products here.

I feel that the fit of the mask is more comfortable than the Lovemore masks as its less tight, even though I used both the ear and neck hooks.
My skin did not look significantly brighter but it does look smoother, more even-toned and more radiant. This product has awesome ingredients to promote brightening and lifting, which can be found in the top of the ingredient list, meaning that it has a high concentration.

Review : John Master Organics Lavender Rosemary Shampoo and Citrus and Neuroli Detangler

Shampoo Description
Lavender and rosemary extracts are combined with 13 other certified-organic ingredients plus soy protein and wheat amino acids to leave hair healthy, shiny and manageable. Does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate. Safe for color-treated hair.

Key Ingredients
• lavender - normalizes scalp conditions; slows hair loss
• rosemary - stimulates hair growth; adds volume and shine
• soy protein - strengthens hair follicles; makes hair look thicker and
fuller, improves shine
• wheat amino acids - help with comb-through and shine
• decyl glucoside - natural surfactant certified for its eco-clean
production values

Conditioner Description
Whether rinsed out or used as a leave-in conditioner, this lightweight formula detangles and conditions with a highly-effective combination of 17 certified-organic ingredients. Natural soy proteins and borage oil replenish lipid content. Wheat amino acids and soy proteins restore strength and shine, while essential oils of grapefruit, lemon and neroli provide an uplifting aroma. Safe for color-treated hair.

Key Ingredients
• grapefruit - toning effect on scalp
• neroli - treats dry scalp
• soy protein - strengthens hair follicles; makes hair look thicker and fuller, improves shine
• wheat amino acids - help with comb-through and shine
• coconut oil - helps add moisture and shine

Yet another 2 products from the same travel kit as the shower gel , the 30ml sizes depleted quite fast, especially the conditioner as I usually apply a generous layer on my long dry hair ends.
Made of pure coconut soap with herbal infusions of periwinkle, sage leaves, chamomile flowers and other natural ingredients, such as willow bark and burdock root, this aromatic shampoo contains no sodium lauryl sulfate or synthetic artificial color. It is touted to help the hair to resist the stress of pollution, coloring and styling but for the price, I do find the performance to be average.

The conditioner claimed to eliminate tangles and leave hair healthy and glossy with its lightweight and moisture-rich texture. Natural vegetable oils replenish lipid content while protein and vitamins restore strength and shine. Citrus and Neroli extracts provide a refreshing, stimulating scent that lasts for hours. It can also be used as a leave-in conditioner.

The shampoo, in dark orange colour has a higher fluidity than the conditioner which is thick and creamy in an off-white colour. It has an aromatic lavender and rosemary scent while the conditioner smells of citrus scent.
The shampoo, an award-winning item, has little suds and required lots of massaging into the hair. It left my hair slightly straw-like when its wet during shower so my fingers have some difficulty to comb through. Yet my hair is soft when its dry. However, it left some build-up in my hair, which causes dandruff.
The conditioner, which won Instyle Best Beauty Buys 2011 left my hair soft and bouncy however it failed to detangle my hair fully, probably only 1/4 of the tangled knots.

At Makeupalley, the shampoo scored 3.7 from 21 users and 4.2 from 82 reviewers for the conditioner.
At Total Beauty, the conditioner scored an impressive 9.9 from 8 reviewers.

Review : Sunsilk Keratinology Dual Treatment Shots

Product Description
Dual Treatment shots by Sunsilk Keratinology is an advanced reconstruction program aimed at intensive repair to prolong the beauty of salon treated hair. It consists of a two-step treatment with Keratin Micro Technology for severely damaged hair.
Step 1: Contains keratin and nutrients to help replenish protein in damaged hair.
Step 2: Enhances shine and smoothness.
Use weekly for intensive repair

I bought a set of 2 tubes from the local Watsons at $5.50, which is for a 1 time usage. Since I have not been using a rinse-off conditioner for the last 2 weeks, I thought it would be wise to indulge in some intensive treatment for the hair after a long tough week at work. I lost the photo of the original packaging and copied the above photo from the source quoted below. In actual fact, both tubes are housed in a clear packaging.

Sunsilk Keratinology products are touted to use an advanced Pico Technology, where their nutrients are so tiny that it can deeply penetrate into the layers of the hair, leaving you with salon-treated hair.

There are 2 tubes that are to be used for a 1 time treatment.
Step 1, a 15ml tube of contents are to be left in the hair for at least a minute before rinsing it off. It is supposed to help provide intense repair. Step 2, a 5ml tube of contents are for leave-in purposes and is supposed to help to lock in the shine and smoothness of the hair.

Their tiny caps are meant to be twisted and opened to reveal a small nozzle. The first tube oozes out  white and creamy contents and I used it like an intensive conditioner, coating my hair from mid-length to the roots for 1 minute before rinsing it off. Even during the rinsing of hair, I can literally feel that its coated with silicon, making the hair soft and silky, like using Pantene.

The 2nd tube is to be used on semi-dry hair, as a regular conditioner. The clear and watery serum-like texture is not that greasy. Overall, the treatment detangled my hair beautifully up to 2 days and gives the hair a softer and healthier look till the next wash.

Review : Hopscotch Kids "Say Say Oh Playmate" and Soy Polish Remover

Product Description
Hopscotch Kids™ WaterColors is the premier non-toxic, kid-friendly alternative to solvent-based nail polish. Our water-based formula is free of the harsh, smelly chemicals that most nail polishes contain, helping condition your little one's nails with long-lasting, vibrant color. Hopscotch Kids contains none of the chemicals found in typical nail polish. We are "3 Free" as well as free of ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, nitrocellulose, acetone, and heavy metals. We are truly non-toxic.
Hopscotch Kids™ WaterColors is ranked the safest kids polish by Environmental Working Group's Cosmetic Safety Database.

MaterialWater, Acrylic Polymer Emulsion, Butoxy Diglycol and Non Toxic Colorants

I was on the lookout for non-toxic nail polish last year and chanced upon a promotion by one of the members posting on an online forum. I snagged "Say Say Oh Playmate" for $15 and the nail polish remover for $13. She was selling them in a variety of colours but only this colour from the kids range appealed to me, with its vibrant colour. Well, it turned out to be slightly different from the actual colour, as what you see on the second shot.

Hopscotch products are touted to be Vegan, Cruelty-free, Gluten Free, Fragrance Free, Toxin Free,     Paraben Free, Hypoallergenic and Biodegradable.

This is my very first non-toxic nail polish and I was wary of its application and lasting power. I don't apply nail polish that regularly and I am not that adept with it. I just want something that is simple to use and remove. Expecting it to be purple colour, it turned out to be more red than purple.

The application was tough for me. The texture was very runny so each coat was so sheer and requires 3 coats to reach the opacity I like. And because its so runny, it tends to leave globs easily on my nailbeds. I would think that it may be easily rectified by those who apply nail polish on a regular basis. I have yet to learn how to control the flow of the runny texture. The end result is a glossy look.

I really like that its kind to the body, without any harmful nasties. Great for children and pregnant ladies. Unfortunately, the nail polish barely last more than a day, before it starts to chip. For the record, I did not apply any base coat or top coat.

Ingredients :
water, acrylic polymer emulsion, +/- CI15850, CI77492, CI77499, CI77289, CI77891, and/or mica

Product Description
Hopscotch Kids revolutionary soy polish remover has been formulated to remove both water-based and solvent-based nail polishes safely and naturally without stripping the nails of natural oils.

For easiest removal, soak nails in warm water for a few minutes. Pre-moisten all nails with remover allowing time for polish to soften. Then moisten cotton pad and rub across nail to remove. You can also remove any remaining polish using an orange stick. After removal, thoroughly rinse nails.

This was even tougher to use. I literally rub and rub on my nails and the nail polish hardly move a budge, yet foams started to appear like detergent suds. Things started to get slightly easier after pre-moistening the nails with remover first, though the conventional remover type is still easier to use. I should try soaking my nails in warm water next time. You can also use your fingernails to scratch on them and peel it off. Its quite fun too. :)
The polish remover made my hands drying, although less drying than using the conventional nail polish remover.

Ingredients :
methyl soyate, dimethyl adipate, dimethyl glutarate

Update ( 30th November 2018 ) :
The nail polish has dried up. I hardly used it though. Guess it really drives home the point that Hopscotch Kids is truly non-toxic because other nail polishes of the mainstream brands still holds well.

Review : Naruko Raw Job's Tears Supercritical Co2 Whitening Mask

The supercritical CO2 and emulsion technologies lock nutrients into the mask, and the serum penetrates deep into the skin through the silky cloth mask. The mask brightens skin and increases the skin's moisture and defense levels.

Vitamin E : provides anti-aging benefits and increases the skin's whitening absorbency
Exclusively Patented Phytoferulin® Complex : increases the skin's natural defense and instantly brightens the skin.
Raw Job's Tears Extract (also known as "barley water"): moisturizes and renews skin.
Hyaluronic Acid and Snow Fungus Extract : eliminate dry skin and nourishes the skin all day long.

I have much faith in Naruko products so I did not hesitate to pick this up from Hong Kong last year, when it was still not available in Singapore.

Each box contains 10 individual packed sheet masks which requires more force to tear open each sheet mask. Made with sturdy and comfortable material, the cutting is slightly large for my cherubic face shape.

The eye area was cut too low and too large, leaving a gap on the undereye area, while reaching quite close to my eyelids. The nose area was longer than expected, reaching more than my nostrils area, hence I have to fold up the excess material, while using the mask.

It carries a light scent. Wet with essence, it adheres well to the skin, giving me hydrated, fresher and slightly brighter look. Skin was left soft and supple too.

The end result of the packaging becomes a box for whatever small items that you want to keep in place.

If you are keen to try out the mask, you can purchase on Amazon for an affordable price.

Review : Envie De Neuf Thalasso-Decompress Eye Mask

Product Description
A cooling, hydrating eye mask freshly resets the eyes in one go.
Dramatically decompresses, tones tired eyes to be rested-looking, eyelids lighter and brighter and sensationally stress-free. Freshen up the eyes as like you just wake up after eight hour of sleep.

A good friend of mine, has a colleague who swears by this brand. She received some eye masks from her colleague and promptly passed one to me.

Envie De Neuf (EDN) is French meaning "Envy for New". Started by M Seeds International, EDN incorporates the latest advancements in anti-aging technology from Europe, Japan and the United States to give you the most effective skin care treatments available. With solutions focused on the signs of aging, like fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and loss of elasticity, EDN ensures each of our products is formulated to activate skin cells, promote clarity of skin tone, contour the face and condition the skin. You can read more about the company here.

Containing a fabulous formula with algae and coral weed extracts, multiple botanical compound of cucumber, white tea and sea mayweed extracts and fascinating deep-sea micro-organism Abyssine 657 to infuse the eye areas with concentrated doses of high powered ingredients.

That friend of mine, developed allergies to the mask, with itchness after trying 1 sheet. Thankfully, it works fine on my eye area. The eye sheet mask, with a protective layer is folded up in the packaging.
It has a distinct scent of marine, probably that of algae and coral weed extracts.

The material is thin and soft and provides a comfortable fit on the eye area. It has 2 slits in the middle, though the slits are too small for you to open it up fully. The mask is large and covered a significant area of the upper eyelids and lower undereye area, as well as covering the area where crow feet are usually found.

I used it for 15 minutes, until 9pm and amazingly, the fine lines under my eyes were much reduced and smoothened. Eyes looked fresher and less tired. The effects were still there just before I hit the bed at midnight.

However, such effects only last temporarily as my fine lines are back the following morning. Personally, I think its a great spa treat when you have an important date or event. I like the comfortable and relaxed feel, especially after a long day at work. Its very rare that an eye mask works for me. Definitely a keeper!

Guide To Beautiful Hair

Boost hair with superfoods

Protein and omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon and nuts generate a healthier scalp. Nutrients found in leafy vegetables, beans, and carrots are also good for your hair. Stay away from fad diets designed for quick weight loss as most of these diets lack proper nutrients, such as zinc, biotin, or protein - all these can lead to brittle hair or hair loss.

Lukewarm water for shine

Hot water strip the scalp of sebum, which is the protective oil that acts a natural conditioner and gives hair its shine. This doesn't mean you have to endure through cold baths. Instead, use lukewarm water to wash your hair.

Protein for split ends

Frequent hair styling, perming, colouring or bleaching can damage your hair's protective outer layer, known as the cuticle. A damaged cuticle will result in the dreaded split ends. Look for conditioners that contain protein. What they do is penetrate the hair shaft and repair split ends. The fix only lasts until the next shampoo, so you'll need to use it regularly.

No oil treatments for dandruff

It's a misconception that dandruff is caused by a dry scalp, but in actual fact, it is caused by an inflammatory process that affects the scalp. Rubbing oil into the scalp can make the inflammation worse, resulting in more unsightly white flakes. That is why medicated shampoos are your best bet at treating dandruff.

Do not brush your curls

Use a pick as it keeps curls looking better as opposed to brushing or combing your hair. Conditioners with polymers such as polyvinylpyrrolidone also help to smooth hair and make it more manageable. Avoid excessive use of flat-irons and relaxers, - this can damage your hair further.

Do not comb excessively

The 100 brush strokes a day is a myth. In fact, too much brushing will break off more of your precious hair. Most people lose an average of 50 to 100 hairs every day, so a little hair loss is normal. To minimize additional hair loss, use a brush with ball-tipped bristles and avoid brushing while your hair is wet.

Avoid intense hair dye jobs

If you absolutely want a colour change, some stylists recommend staying within three shades of your natural colour to minimize the damage.

Shower before swimming

Always rinse your hair before entering the pool. This will prevent harm to your hair caused by chlorine. When your hair is soaked with water, it won't absorb as much chlorine contained in the pool. For added protection, use a pH-balancing hair product to safeguard further chemical damage.

Take a styling break

Some days it is wise to leave your hair alone. You might not realise this, but all the combing, tugging, blow drying, and chemicals from styling products are detrimental to your hair shafts. If you have damaged hair, avoid excessive styling and give your hair a break. Sometimes, less is more.

Review : The Body Shop Moisture White Shiso BB Cream

Product Description
This multi-action make-up base creates fairer-looking skin in an instant and conceals, soothes and protects.

Benefits :
- Conceals blemishes and fine lines with a clean, natural finish that feels fresh and lets skin breathe.
- Corrects the colour of skin to give a one tone lighter complexion, soothes dryness and improves over-all skin tone and texture thus giving skin a radiant glow.
- Protects from UV thanks to its SPF 25 and PA +++.

Key Ingredients :
Shiso extract - reduces early melanin-making signals even before the hyperpigmentation process and melanin production cycle starts - helping prevent uneven skin tone, brown spots and freckles
Vitamin C - provides anti-oxidant protection helping to reduce the production of melanin
Liquorice - works to limit the effect of melanin synthesis and helps to reduce the variances in skin tone

A good friend of mine, being a fan of TBS was purchasing some products in the store and was given the serum as complimentary samples so I took the chance to ask for a BB cream sample instead. No sample sachets were available so the friendly promoter squeezed some contents from the counter tester into a small round tub for each of us. I was apprehensive on using it initially, but I did see her wiping the opening before squeezing the contents out to us. I am sticky about hygenie for skincare products, especially since its a tester for the public but since she has attempted to clean it before giving it to us, I gave it the benefit of the doubt and have been using it for the past 3 weeks.

The shade of this BB cream fits my skin tone well, the texture is slightly thicker and has a medium coverage that is able to conceal redness and blemishes moderately well. As with all other BB creams, it may emphasize dry patches if the skin is dry.  It has good oil control for my combination skin.

I like the dewy healthy glow that this BB cream imparts to my skin, making my skin look brighter, radiant and more even-toned. It has an added protection of SPF25 and PA+++ but its not enough under our humid weather so please be reminded to layer a sunscreen underneath. I do not have the full ingredient list but I like that it contains Vitamin C, a good antioxidant for everyone. The Japanese Shiso Oil is known to be rich in vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids while the organic aloe vera helps to moisturise and soothe skin for enhanced luminosity.

Review : Etude House Open Your Eyes Mask Sheet

Product Description
Gel essence mask sheet supplies moisture to penetrate deep into skin for brightening and revitalizing effects. Contains lutein to help protect eyes and skin from oxidative stress.

Bought this mask via a friend who went to Korea. I simply love to stock up on eye masks wherever I go, because its just so de-stressing.
Interestingly, the eye mask sheet looks something like this. It is kept in a clear tray with 2 protective layers, one on top and one on the bottom.

The material tore easily and texture of the sheet is glooey and slippery but not wet. Just the cold slimy type, associated with the commonly gel-type of eye mask. The eye flaps can be open or close, depending on your preference. It covers a big chunk of the undereye area which is pretty good. However, that also meant that you need to adjust the sheet several times to get a comfortable fit.

It has a light scent, probably that of grapefruit, which is the main ingredient of the mask. Hardly detectable, unless you bring it near to your nose for a sniff. I have bought 3 sheets but none gave me any visible improvement.
