Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ Review
Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++

Product Description
Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ is a lightweight and creamy type organic sunscreen that's comfortable on skin. Even if you apply a large amount several times, it is not sticky and gives a moist finish like that of a light moisturizing cream. Containing 30% rice extract and grain fermented extracts, it provides moisture and nourishment to the skin.

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics has taken the internet by storm in 2022, with its unbelievable lightweight lotion texture and dewy glow so of course, I have to try it. I purchased it from Yesstyle late last year but didn't get round to using it until this year.

Prior to this, I have only tried Beauty of Joseon Bubble Toner (Green Plum + AHA) so this is only my second product from the brand.

Hailing from Korea, Beauty of Joseon has a key philosophy which is to create skincare products that deliver a sense of comfort and relaxation to skin using Hanbang ingredients.

Packaging, Scent and Texture

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sunscreen Texture

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++ is housed in a 50ml white tube with a minimalistic elegant vibe. It has a milky sunscreen scent that reminded me vaguely of MizuMi UV Water Defense SPF 50+ PA++++ and MizuMi UV Water Serum SPF 50+ PA++++

Famed for its texture, this sunscreen has a lightweight creamy-lotion consistency that has been highly raved by those who have tried it.

How To Use :
Take an appropirate amount of sunscreen and apply it onto your face and neck

Tip : For dry to combination skin, BOJ recommends applying sunscreen after using serum or cream. However, skin that secretes a lot of sebum or is oily do not need to apply a separate moisturizing cream.

Performance and Ingredients

Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen Review

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics is a chemical sunscreen containing calming and brightening ingredients. To some people, it feels like a light moisturizing cream without any stickiness or greasiness even if one layers it several times. It helps to provide a natural glow without any white cast.

Consisting of ingredients like rice and grain fermented extracts which are rich in vitamins B, C, E, amino acids, and minerals which help to moisturize dry skin and comfortably calm the skin.

Manufactured by Kolmar Korea ( same as Face Republic Purity Sun Essence, Benton Skin Fit Mineral Sun Cream, Benton Air Fit UV Defense Sun Cream and Benton Mineral Sun Stick ), Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics has completed SPF and PA tests in labs located in Korea and Spain and the results are as follows.

[SPF]
Korean Lab : 52.5±5.8
Spain Lab : 63.1±0.6

[PA]
Korean Lab : UVA PF 16.1±2.4 P++++
Spain Lab : UVA PF 19 P++++

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sunscreen Texture

Due to my combination skin and staying in humid Singapore, I appreciate the lightweight creamy lotion texture that spreads easily and is comfortable, non-sticky with a moist finish and a natural glow, however, it is more moisturizing than what my skin needs, with very dewy finishing and I need to tone it down with powder.

It works very well as a base though, as wearing sunscreen with this type of finishing under makeup gives me an airbrushed flawless effect and I love it.

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics contains the following 4 UV filters :

Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate : A new generation, chemical sunscreen agent with high UVA protection and high photostability. Also known as Uvinul A Plus.

Ethylhexyl Triazone : A new generation, chemical sunscreen that gives the highest photo-stable absorption of all available UVB filters today. Also known as Octyl Triazone and Uvinul T 150.

Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol : Also known as Tinosorb M, this is a "hybrid" sunscreen meaning it's half-way between physical (the ones that, at least partly, reflect the sun) and chemical agents (that absorb the rays, which most sunscreens do).  It is a new generation UV filter and gives a nice broad-spectrum coverage (280-400 nm, meaning UVB as well as UVA protection) and is highly photostable. It can also help to stabilize other less stable sunscreens, like Octinoxate and work well with other UV-filters.

The safety profile of Tinosorb M is great. It is not absorbed into the skin unlike some other chemical sunscreens and does not show estrogenic activity. However, Tinosorb M leaves a white cast on the skin that can be bothersome on darker skin tones.

Diethylhexy Butamido Triazone : A chemical sunscreen agent that's very oil soluble and requires relatively low concentrations to achieve high SPF values. Particularly suitable for water-repellent and water-resistant formulations, it is super photostable where it loses 10% of its SPF protection abilities only in 25 hours when 2 hours counts already as "photostable" in the world of chemical sunscreens. Also known as Iscotrizinol.

For the uninitiated,
UVA - Long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the skin's thickest layer and causes premature skin aging, wrinkling and dark spots.
UVB - Short wave ultraviolet B (UVB) rays burn the superficial layers of the skin and is the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer.
PA - More + signs mean longer protection against UVA
SPF - Higher numbers mean longer protection against UVB

The key ingredients are.....

Rice extract 30% + Grain fermented extracts
Rice has played a very important role as a staple food and skin care ingredient in Korean history.
In the Joseon Dynasty, rice bran water was used like the toner of today, and was called Beauty Water, used for beautiful skin. Rice bran is rich in amino acids and minerals, helping to moisturize dry skin.

Conclusion

To conclude, Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun : Rice + Probiotics is a moisturizing sunscreen that spreads easily, comfortable on skin and is non-sticky with a moist finish and natural glow, although on my skin type in humid weather, the dewiness can be alittle too much, hence I need to tone it down with powder.

I loved the airbrushed effect on skin under makeup but the sunscreen won't be a repurchase as Cosrx Aloe Soothing Sun Cream and Face Republic Purity Sun Essence still remain my favourites.
