MizuMi UV Water Defense and UV Water Serum reviews

I purchased MizuMi UV Water Defense SPF 50+ PA++++ and MizuMi UV Water Serum SPF 50+ PA++++  100% non-chemical sunscreens when I was in Bangkok some time back. I was excited to try them after coming across their sunscreens on Instagram via Tanya at thelipstickfairy. Check out my previous review on MizuMi Smooth Cleansing Water.

You can read more about its brand story on their website

Lets delve down to see how the sunscreens worked for me.
MizuMi UV Water Defense SPF 50+ PA++++ review

MizuMi UV Water Defense SPF 50+ PA++++ is a 100% physical/mineral sunscreen with a light and comfortable texture, enriched with antioxidants. The lightweight formula glides on with a watery serum-like texture that’s quickly absorbed for a non-sticky, fresh feel. It is free from perfume, oil, alcohol, paraben or synthetic colour.

It comes in a 30ml tube with a fitted orange cap. Unfortunately, I hated the scent which smells like a mixture of sunscreen and spoilt milk that made me wonder if mine was contaminated or had expired earlier than the stated date. It took me a long time to grow accustomed to its scent.

I developed a zit 2 hours after application on my first use which was amazingly fast. Thank goodness, there were no more new zits thereafter.

MizuMi UV Water Defense SPF 50+ PA++++ Texture

Scent aside, I actually really like the sunscreen. Its a white lotion texture that glides on skin effortlessly without any stickiness, greasiness and white cast, despite it being a 100% physical sunscreen. There was a slight sheen but its not a major issue since my holy grail RMS Beauty "Un" Powder can help to mattify it.

Adding on, MizuMi UV Water Defense is a 5-FREE formula with no perfume, oil, alcohol, paraben or synthetic color and is water-resistant for up to 40 minutes.

MizuMi UV Water Defense SPF 50+ PA++++ Review

MizuMi uses mineral-based sunscreens by marking it as ZT-ShieldTM, which consists of ultra-small molecules of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Provides lightweight, non-abrasive UV protection without any chemical reaction on the skin. Highly stable and reduce chances of irritation.

Also contains Yuki-CETM anti-oxidant concentrate from Japan. Highly elasticity of Vitamin E, Vitamin C, IP and Vitamin E. Protects skin from free radicals caused by UV rays. Reduce the chance of sunburn, freckles, dark spots that prevent the aging of the prematurely.

In terms of ingredients, MizuMi UV Water Defense SPF 50+ PA++++ contains the following....

Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide : Physical UV blocking ingredients.

As a mineral-based sunscreen active ingredient, zinc oxide reflects light off the surface of the skin where the sunscreen is applied back into the environment, much like a mirror.

Zinc oxide can be ‘micronized,’ meaning it’s processed into very small particles, so small that the preparation appears clear when applied on the skin. Non-micronized formulations are often less cosmetically elegant and are more opaque or white. So, if you’ve ever applied a sunscreen that left a white, powdery cast on your body, it most likely contained zinc oxide as a key ingredient.

Zinc oxide isn’t the only sunscreen ingredient used to block harmful UVA and UVB rays. Many sunscreens contain an ingredient called titanium dioxide, which, like zinc oxide, is typically found in mineral sunscreens. It’s also considered safe since it does not penetrate the skin and offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Although, some studies have shown that titanium dioxide can work as a photosensitizer that can be absorbed by the skin, a safe bet is to look for sunscreens that are known to use particles too big to be absorbed, or those containing zinc oxide, which is the safest ingredient according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG)

Both Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide have been shown to be non-toxic when used on the skin and to not break down when exposed to the sun, which is vital. ( source )

Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate : An oil-soluble derivative of Vitamin C that can be used in higher concentrations without drawbacks. It is one of the most stable derivatives of Vitamin C but, being a derivative, its potency will not be directly comparable to pure L-Ascorbic Acid. It significantly improves facial hyperpigmentation, reduces trans-epidermal water loss, increases skin elasticity and
visibly improves texture and wrinkles.

Hyaluronic Acid : Also known as "Moisture tank" as it draws in moisture 1,000 times of its weight. It helps maintain the necessary moisture for skin by preventing evaporation of moisture. The 5 types of HAs are Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid and Hyaluronic Acid.

Saxifraga Sarmentosa Extract : An antioxidant hat protects the skin from environmental free radicals. The extract also has astringent qualities, which temporarily tones and tightens the skin, as well as degreases oily skin.

MizuMi UV Water UV Water Serum SPF 50+ PA++++ review

MizuMi UV Water UV Water Serum SPF 50+ PA++++ is a 100% physical sunscreen with a light, comfortable texture. It provides lasting protection against UVA1, UVA2, and UVB radiation with SPF50+ PA++++; helps prevent dark circles and premature signs of skin aging caused by free radicals.

The lightweight formula glides on with a watery serum-type texture that’s quickly absorbed by skin for a non-sticky, fresh feel; enriched with antioxidant compounds including yuki extract. It is 5-FREE and does not contain perfume, oil, alcohol, paraben, or synthetic color. Dermatologist tested and is suitable for daily use.

While it also comes in the same 30ml size as MizuMi UV Water Defense, however, I can only find the travel sized of 8g pack during my shopping spree at Bangkok. In a way, I am thankful as I also can't stand the scent for this sunscreen too.

MizuMi UV Water UV Water Serum SPF 50+ PA++++ texture

MizuMi UV Water UV Water Serum has a lighter texture than the UV Water Defense, with a subtle cooling sensation. As compared to other physical sunscreens, this glides and sinks into skin well without the stickiness, greasiness and white cast but I really wish they can do something about the scent.

It smells like a musty sunscreen, that makes me gag initially and I took a long time to get used to having it on my face. I am unsure if mine was contaminated or expired earlier than its stated date.

The oil control is slightly better than MizuMi UV Water Defense, with just a hint of sheen on the face after 3 hours of wear. That said, it can be slightly drying at times, so a good hydrating routine is recommended prior to applying the sunscreen.

Conclusion

Overall, I am not a fan of the scents from both sunscreens but I love their textures. MizuMi UV Water Defense SPF 50+ PA++++  would be great for the outdoors and water activities since its water-resistant for up to 40 minutes while MizuMi UV Water UV Water Serum SPF 50+ PA++++ would be suitable for daily wear since its more lightweight.

I am quite pleased that despite being physical sunscreens, they have no white casts at all. However, unfortunately, unless they do something about the scents, I wouldn't repurchase them. Up till now, I am still unsure if my sunscreens were contaminated as I don't think any one disliked the scents as much as me.
