Melixir Vegan Airfit Sunscreen has been on my wish list for a long while and when I chanced upon a sale in Sephora, there it goes, into my cart.
Founded in 2018, Melixir is a plant-based Korean skincare brand inspired by the Korean lifestyle and holistic wellness philosophy. The brand combines medicinal herbs, fermentation technology, and Korean skincare innovation to create gentle, slow-aging skincare solutions suitable for sensitive skin. Melixir is also committed to sustainability, using vegan ingredients and environmentally conscious practices.
Packaging, Scent and Texture
Melixir Vegan Airfit Sunscreen comes in a sleek 50ml tube with a minimalist design that feels both modern and travel-friendly. The slim packaging fits easily into handbags and makeup pouches, making it convenient for daily use or reapplication on the go.
Upon application, there is a slight cooling sensation and a light herbal scent that fades quickly and does not linger on the skin. The texture resembles a lightweight moisturizer, spreading easily across the face without feeling heavy. While I would not describe it as completely weightless or invisible as claimed, it remains comfortable to wear throughout the day.
That said, the sunscreen does leave a mildly tacky finish, which gets better if you are in an air-conditioned place. Do note that alcohol is listed as the 3rd ingredient in the list.
How To Use :
Apply generously 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at least every 2 hours.
Use within 36 months of manufacturing date and within 12 months of opening.
Performance and Ingredients
How do you choose the right sunscreen?
According to Melixir, an effective sunscreen should provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
- UVA Protection is measured by the PA rating (Protection Grade of UVA), ranging from PA+ to PA++++, with PA++++ offering the highest level of UVA protection.
- UVB Protection is measured by SPF (Sun Protection Factor). Higher SPF values provide greater protection against sunburn caused by UVB rays.
The Melixir Vegan Airfit Sunscreen offers SPF50+ PA++++ broad-spectrum protection, making it suitable for daily wear and outdoor activities.
I was surprised by how quickly I finished this 50ml tube. Despite not using it every day, I emptied it within a month because I applied it generously not only on my face but also on my neck and arms whenever I headed outdoors. Previously, I used separate sunscreens for my face and body, so it usually took much longer for me to finish a sunscreen.
When applied generously, there is a subtle white cast initially, particularly on the face. Fortunately, it disappears after a little blending and massaging into the skin.
The finish leaves a slight sheen and mild tackiness, which may be noticeable for those who prefer completely matte sunscreens. That said, it never feels drying or uncomfortable. My skin remained comfortable throughout wear, without any tightness or irritation.
According to the brand, the sunscreen provides long-lasting sun protection for up to 10 hours, making it suitable for extended outdoor exposure.
I recently put this claim to the test during a hike at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Before heading out, I layered a ROUND LAB Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Stick underneath, followed by a generous application of Melixir Vegan Airfit Sunscreen on my face, neck and arms. To reduce the shine on face, I finished with a light layer of The Odbo Sunblock Pact SPF 50+ PA+++.
The result? No sunburn, no noticeable tanning, and my skin remained comfortable throughout the hike despite Singapore's heat and humidity. While I cannot scientifically verify the 10-hour protection claim, my outdoor experience left me impressed with its overall performance as a daily sunscreen.
Melixir Vegan Airfit Sunscreen SPF 50+ PA++++ is free from phenoyethanol, phthalates, parabens, silicones and sulfates.
The key ingredients are....
Korean Rice Extract : Harness the power to brighten your skin tone, unveiling a radiant, youthful glow.
Hyaluronic Acid : Helps to keepthe skin well-hydrated, plump, and smooth.
Basil Oil : Soothes irritated skin for a healthy complexion.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) : Carefully selectedto even out skin tone, it provides a luminous and even complexion.
Turmeric Extract : Provides antioxidant benefits that help reduce skin irritation, brighten the skin, and improve overall skin health.
The 5 UV filters are....
Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate : A new generation, chemical sunscreen agent with high UVA protection and high photostability. Also known as Uvinul A Plus.
Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine : A broad-spectrum ( full UVA and UVB protection ) chemical sunscreen agent which is also known as Tinosorb S. Hardly deteriorates in the presence of UV.
Ethylhexyl Triazone : A new generation, chemical sunscreen that gives the highest photo-stable absorption of all available UVB filters today. Also known as Octyl Triazone and Uvinul T 150.
Isoamyl p-Methoxycinnamate : A chemical sunscreen agent with UVB protection. Also known as Amiloxate.
Polysilicone-15 : A chemical sunscreen agent with UVB protection. It also help to stabilize the famously unstable UVA filter, avobenzone and works especially well with Ensulizole to achieve high SPF protection. Also known as Parsol SLX.
However, do note that the ingredient list also contains Butyloctyl Salicylate, another chemical UV filter not registered as a sunscreen active yet.
Butyloctyl Salicylate : Helps to increase the SPF rating and enhance the stability of other UV filters like Oxybenzone and Avobenzone. It is not reef-safe. Currently not registered as a sunscreen active yet.
Said to be the modified version of the chemical UV filter Octisalate which was created intentionally by the sunscreen industry to avoid having Octislate on the ingredient listing as a declared active and used by formulators to disguise the presence of a ‘chemical’ UV filter in mineral sunscreen formulas. It is also used to reduce the amount of inorganic mineral filters needed to get a desired labelled SPF and PPD rating. (source)
For the uninitiated,
UVA - Long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the skin's thickest layer and causes premature skin aging, wrinkling and dark spots.
UVB - Short wave ultraviolet B (UVB) rays burn the superficial layers of the skin and is the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer.
PA - More + signs mean longer protection against UVA
SPF - Higher numbers mean longer protection against UVB
