Way before Kbeauty gets popular, most of my skincare products were made in USA and I always longed to visit USA for their skincare as most of them were not available in Singapore then. They have many organic brands mostly unheard of and you have to join sprees so that you can share the cost of shipping. Those were the days. I did made a huge haul when I was in USA twice though.
Nowadays, there are many online stores in Singapore and its no longer so difficult to get some of the more popular brands like Leahlani. I have a soft spot for Leahlani products and have previously tried Leahlani Skincare Bohemian Ruby Balancing Toner and Leahlani Skincare Bless Beauty Balm.
Made in USA, Honey Love Microdermabrasion Exfoliator is free from parabens, mineral oil, silicon, propylene glycol, synthetic fragrances, sulphates, GMOs, PEGs, DEA, TEA and animal-derived ingredients. It is the first product created by the founder, Leahlani for her brand and is her holy grail for clear, healthy and happy skin. It works like a 3-in-1 cleanser, mask and exfoliator — a multi tasking superhero, meant for oily, combo-prone and acne skin.
Leahlani suggested that a good way to determine if your skin is in need of exfoliating is by doing the fingertip test. Make sure skin is clean and very dry. Using fingertips, gently glide them across the face and really 'feel' your skin, connect with the texture. The fingertips are very sensitive and they are our own personal ‘feelers’. If your skin is ready for a gentle exfoliation, you will feel areas of congestion (generally around your T-Zone). You may choose to spot-exfoliate these areas if your skin is more on the sensitive side, this works exceptionally well.
Packaging, Scent and Texture
Leahlani Skincare Honey Love Microdermabrasion Exfoliator comes in a beautiful 118ml frosted glass jar with a gold accented cap. I simply adored the divine scent in each of Leahlani Skincare products and this exfoliator is no exception.
Honey Love smells like delicious sweet honey with hibiscus and lavender notes. It makes me feel relaxed and happy each time I used it. However, the texture is very thick and stiff so a spatula is needed to stir it well and to activate the crystals at the bottom before usage.
How To Use
Start with a freshly cleansed face. Stir well to activate the crystals at the bottom of the jar. Massage 1/2 - 1 teaspoon of honey love into damp skin in gentle, circular motions. For optimal results, wait 3-5 minutes before rinsing well with warm water.
Performance
Leahlani Skincare Honey Love Microdermabrasion Exfoliator is unlike other exfoliators I have tried before. Instead of a grainy texture for a good scrubbing action, Honey Love is like a thick mask with microdermabrasion crystals for a good deep exfoliation. The spherical microdermabrasion crystals helps to prevent tearing and irritation.
It is highly recommended to activate the crystals stuck to the bottom of the jar - some effort is needed to"scoop" the crystals hardened at the bottom and then stir it together with the runny contents. Once the ratio is correct, it would be less runny, drippy or hard.
If the consistency is runny, it would be difficult to get it to stay on your skin as it threatens to drip down. But if the consistency is hard ( crystals more than the liquid ), the exfoliator may end up being slightly more abrasive or scratchy than preferred.
To be honest, I always end up on both extremes and struggles to get the ratio right.
Leahlani recommends to leave the exfoliator for 3 - 5 minutes after exfoliation, so that it can calm and hydrate the skin, alleviating redness and drawing moisture to the surface of the skin.
Honey Love Microdermabrasion Exfoliator is said to cleanse deeply without drying skin tones, purifies to combat breakouts and softens and improves skin’s overall texture.
Indeed, skin appeared fresher, brighter and super smoother. Cleaner and refined pores too. I also hardly have any breakouts since started using this product.
Occasionally, the edges of nose or the brows get slightly itchy after an exfoliating session but on most days, there were no issues.
Do note that I usually kept my skincare products in its original boxes unless its for daily usage and the same goes for Honey Love, however some of the contents got onto the box, causing ants to appear in it ( probably the smart ants got a whiff of the delicious scent ). I ended up cleaning up the whole drawer of skincare goodies and kept Honey Love in a ziplock bag.
Ingredients
ORGANIC NONI FRUIT : Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and contains high levels of antioxidants. Noni contains vitamin A, vitamin C, niacin, iron, calcium, sodium, magnesium, and potassium. This particular fruit is very versatile; almost every part of the noni tree can be used in various forms of cooking, herbal remedies, supplements, and medicinal ointments. Noni is a natural emollient and helps to smooth and rejuvenate the skin.
ORGANIC HIBISCUS FLOWERS : The red ‘roselle’ hibiscus flower has been dubbed the “Botox plant” because of its firming and lifting abilities on the skin. Hibiscus contains natural AHA, which can help speed cellular renewal, mildly exfoliate the skin, and control acne breakouts. Hibiscus helps to strengthen elasticity and moisturize the skin, and the presence of anthocyanocides help to make the pores appear smaller due to its astringent properties.
ORGANIC LAVENDER FLOWERS : Evoke a sense of peace and calm to our skin and well being. Lavender is antibacterial and anti-fungal, and helps to soothe the skin and calm inflammation. Lavender also has a balancing effect on the skin and will help regulate oil control.
ROSE CLAY : Full of iron oxides to give it that beautiful rosy color. Rose clay provides mild exfoliation and helps increase circulation, regenerates collagen, and elastin while promoting new cell growth. Rose clay also helps reduce inflammation, tighten pores, and helps to fade hyperpigmentation.
CORUNDUM CRYSTALS : Corundum microdermabrasion crystals are made from the second hardest mineral known to science. The crystals are ground to a very fine powder, and they do not have any jagged edges, so they will not ‘tear’ skin cells like traditional exfoliators. Corundum has bacteria-killing properties and helps to clear the skin and rinses off clean- without being absorbed into the skin.
ORGANIC HAWAIIAN RAW HONEY : Naturally antiseptic and antimicrobial, helping to cleanse the skin and dissolve bacteria thoroughly. Honey also contains gluconic acid, a mild alpha hydroxy acid that helps to brighten the skin, even the complexion and fade age spots. Once mixed with water, honey will release a peroxide property, which helps to heal acne and impede bacterial growth. Honey is a humectant, drawing moisture to the skin and replenishing it with an abundance of nutrient-dense enzymes.
Conclusion
Leahlani Skincare Honey Love Microdermabrasion Exfoliator certainly takes exfoliation to the next level. If you are seeking a softer complexion, fewer breakouts and a more even skin tone, she's your girl. Honey Love is a potent blend of superfoods maqui berry and noni fruit, vibrant hibiscus, stimulating clays, sweet Hawaiian nectars and microdermabrasion crystals which are all great ingredients for the skin.
It is a great product with great scent, ingredients and performance but the texture was just too bothersome and I don't get the ratio correct most of the times so it ended up either too runny or too scratchy for the skin. And for the price of almost $80 and the effort required, come on - give me another exfoliator. That said, this 118ml sized jar lasted me for about 5 months with once/twice weekly usage.
