Product Description
Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm, the bestselling cleanser is in sherbet form when you scoop it, but melts into an oil-type makeup and residue remover as you massage it over your skin. Formulated with papaya, acerola and herbal extracts, it leaves your skin feeling nourished and supple. Follow with a water-based cleanser.
I am a fan of cleansing water, as a make-up remover, with my all-time favourite as Bioderma Sensibo H20 Micelle Solution, but when you know that a tub of This K-Beauty Cleansing Balm Is Sold Every 3 Seconds, its hard to say no, when you see it everywhere in Seoul.
It is also one of Amazon's Top Choice for Cleansing Balms and reminds me of the wonderful Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm which is one of my Top 22 Tried and Tested Products I Love in 2018.
This cult favourite has gone for an upgrade in appearance and ingredients and I am using the new version which I purchased in Seoul. Mineral Oil has now been replaced with natural Ester Oil, Butylated Hydroxytoluene is gone and skin-friendly Vitamin E acetate is in its place ( allowing this cleanser to be used on all skin types ) and Butyl Parahydroxybenzoate has been replaced with Phenoxyethanol. Read more about the ingredients nearer to the end of the post.
It comes in 4 variants and I bought mine in Original.
Because of how popular Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm is, it seems that there may be fakes from China, because from the packaging, the company seemed to be making a stance on how you can check if your product is genuine.
Offline Check : There is a magnetic bar on one of the cards in the box, where you can check the colour change response, however, I can't seem to see any colour change, even when placed near to another magnet.
Online Check : Scan the QR code on the box to verify the authentication and so I did and the above picture is what I get. I am using an authentic product. Cool!
Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm ( Original ) is a hypoallergenic cleanser that transforms from the sherbet-like textured balm into smooth oil on dry skin. It is formulated to remove waterproof make-up and excess oil and dirt in one simple step. And indeed, it does deliver all its claims.
I am so very impressed with the effectiveness of this balm, with or without double cleanse. If I have sunscreen and make-up on face, I will do a double cleanse, with a cleanser used after the balm. If I am using just sunscreen alone, I will just use the balm, and my skin still stay clean and clear.

How To Use :
1) Use spatula included to scoop balm.
2) Gently massage in circular motions onto dry skin using your fingertips to breakdown all makeup and residue.
3) Add water to emulsify the oil and massage again.
4) Rinse well with lukewarm water or wipe off with face cloth or tissue.
I can even use it to remove eyeshadow and eyeliner on my eyelids without much irritation but it may hurt slightly ( read : not sting ) if it gets into your eyes which is understandable. I even use a cotton bud to check if there were any eye makeup remnants and there were none! Note that I did not have a chance to test it out on mascara so I cannot attest to the effectiveness on that.
The Banila Co Zero Balance Technology is said to deep cleanse and mildly exfoliates without stripping the skin and leaves the skin hydrated and fresh which is true to some extent as I do not feel any drying after-feel after each cleansing session.
You can use the spatula provided to scoop an appropriate amount ( I tend to use a 20 cent coin for my whole face, if its not enough, just scoop again ).
I love love love Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm ( Original ) and won't be able to stop gushing about it. I save so many cotton pads too! Now I understand why Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm ( Original ) is such a cult favourite and loved by beauty enthusiasts and celebrities alike. This is a definite must-have in your stash!

Ingredients :
Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, PEG-10 Isostearate, Synthetic Wax, Thermal Water, Phenoxyethanol, Butylene Glycol, Lithospermum Erythrorhizon Root Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Perfumery, Ethylhexylglycerin, Purified Water, 1,2-Hexandiol, Bamboo Grass/Stem Extract, Aspalathus Linearis Extract, Angelica Archangelica Root Extract, Malpighia Emarginata (Acerola) Fruit Extract, Polyethylene Glycol Adipate/IPDI Copolymer, Acrylates/Ammonium Methacrylate Copolymer, Acrylates/Methoxy PEG-15 Methacrylate Copolymer
NOTE :
While I am happy that Mineral Oil is no longer part of the ingredients but the inclusion of Phenoxyethanol may make some people alittle iffy about it. Phenoxyethanol is common in the chemical industry, acting as a preservative as an alternative to parabens like Butyl Parahydroxybenzoate in this product.
This is what the FDA has to say about Phenoxyethanol:
"Phenoxyethanol is a preservative that is primarily used in cosmetics and medications. It also can depress the central nervous system and may cause vomiting and diarrhea".
Paula, the skincare guru, refuted about the negative claims of Phenoxyethanol which you can read about it here. Also that there are research studies from here and here that concluded that the preservative is safe for use.
If you are still using the original formula with mineral oil in the listed ingredients, do note the following :
There has been controversial studies of the effects of mineral oil on skin, especially in regards to its comedogenic potential with chances of breakout. If you have acne-prone skin, do beware of using products with mineral oil in it. According to a dermatologist quoted in Klog, his studies and experience suggested that mineral oil has low comedogenic potention as it correlate directly with the amount of mineral oil in a product. The more highly refined the mineral oil is, the lower chance for a breakout. According to him, mineral oil does not penetrate the skin due to its large size of its molecular constituents - instead it sits on top and has to be removed by a cleanser or left to create a protective effect.
RESEARCH ARTICLES :
In this journal, its been tested that using mineral oil may lead to skin issues and on cancer.gov, it is concluded that exposure to mineral oils is strongly associated with an increased risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer, particularly of the scrotum.
In another research article, mineral oil has been shown to improve skin softness and barrier function better than some other emollients using the gas-bearing dynamometer and standard water vapour transmission testing as well as in vivo studies showing its effects on suppressing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
In this article by Bewell, as mineral oil is available in different grades, the technical grade, also known as un-purified form, used to lubricate engines and equipment, have been linked in studies to an increased risk of cancer.
The cosmetic grade, used in cosmetics is more purified, but scientists are concerned, based on this 2011 study, that contamination could be a relevant source of mineral oil contamination as there is strong evidence that mineral oil hydrocarbons are the greatest contaminant of the human body, accumulated over time from repeated exposure.
To conclude, the onus is still up to you, if are concerned having these ingredients in your products. Personally for me, I am no purist but is more concerned about Mineral Oil in my products as the ingredient is usually found in the first or second ingredient in the list which meant that the concentration is pretty high.

As for Phenoxyethanol, I am still on the fence about it, as it is a commonly used ingredient and with this as a make-up remover, the duration of product on face is about 3 minutes tops, so the contact is not too severe as compared to having it in skincare products.
However, if you are pregnant, then its a different story.
