• If the strips on your forehead, nose and chin (the T zone) become translucent and the third remains opaque, you have combination skin.

Hair Highlights at Actpoint (again? )

Well, I finally decided to add on some colour to my hair, after a year of haitus. I never really thought that a hair perm in black would look good, it just made one look older. And so I decided to bite the bullet and have it done. Its not that I have never done any hair colouring before.
I started off with hair colouring ( meaning 1 solid colour for the whole head ) many years ago and I thought it was too boring after a few times. Then I moved on to highlights and again, it become too boring for me. And finally, I decided to do lowlights and highlights together on the hair which is my absolute favourite. And I have been doing that once a year for many years.
The ugly thing is when my hair started to grow and so the highlights and lowlights become quite unpleasant as the months gone by. Kinda of like black on the top and colours at the bottom of the hair. Its like wearing a cap.
But I insisted on doing only once a year as its just too damaging on the tresses.
Last year, I decided not to do any hair colouring and stick to my original hair colour plus some leftovers colours from the previous year. Its actually not that obscene since my leftover colour was close to my natural hair colour. I just wanted to let my tresses recover from the years of damage of such chemical treatment.
I started to be more diligent and stock up on my hair treatment products. All my reviews are in the blog. 

So to make the choice to have highlights again, is actually returning back to the days when I first started hair colouring. I just feel that highlights is the least damaging on the hair.
I took 1/2 day leave and pop in by the salon. It was all done in less than 2 hours at $130 ( $110 for the highlights and $20 to clear away the leftover colours ). Efficient!

I did learn something from one of the shampoo lady, that highlights are best suited for those with thick hair as it gives dimension and texture to the hair, to minimize the look of being a thick mop of black hair. Hmm. Its something I never thought of and suddenly I am so thankful to my parents for the genes of having thick hair.  

This is the 3rd time back to the salon so actually I have nothing to add on to the review of this salon, except that I appreciate the fact that Sophie is the one to do the highlights. In other salons, the stylist is usually the one to supervise as she tended to a few customers at any one time. The assistants will do all the jobs while the stylist claim the credit.

So finally, I found 1 salon which truly is doing something correct. Thank goodness.
Will I go back to the salon again? Watch this space in 3 months time when I go for my next haircut then. lol.

The end result is actually more reddish than what I would like. Its actually a mixture of brown and red. Stylist usually think fair skinned people are more suited for reds but I absolutely hated reds. I don't crave for attention. I like natural colours as too light colours made the tresses look damaged and dry. I don't like red as its too attention grabbing which is not really me. And if you do notice, many aunties like red coloured hair too. haha.

Review : Schwarzkopf Osis Upload Volume Cream

Schwarzkopf OSiS Upload Volume Cream gives instant lightweight volume and medium style control. It contains conditioning and natural shine ingredients to create contradictive styles on damp or dry hair. I bought this product during my last visit to Hair Inn early last year. It was recommended by my hair stylist and costs $25, down from the original $37. I only started using it several months after the perm as the thought of more volume scares me, since I already have thick hair to begin with.

After 2 haircuts, the curls seem less defined and so I decided to use this volume cream to create more definition and volume. I did not had an easy time using this product initially as it did not portray the desired effect I wanted. I was trying to find the best way in enhancing this product on my hair, trying to use it on dry hair, less damp hair and damp hair.

Using it on dry hair is out of the question as its too dry to play with. I tried it on 50% wet hair and the waves turned out to be rather ugly, in my standard. Not much waves and my hair was limp and flat. I almost wanted to give up on this product.

Then one day, it just happened that my hair was all wet and I used the cream on it. And what a difference it made! Definition and volume on the barely-there curls become more lively with abit of shine.

There was no sticky or greasy texture, just a light hold on the hairstyle. It kept my style intact the whole day. Note that, I do not have a practice to blow-dry my hair, so my method of using this is rather idiot-proof. Just apply on wet hair, twist, scrunch and go.

This was a GWP with my H20 purchase last year and upon realizing that its a shine-neutralizing product, I was not keen to use it, though I do think my T-zone does need it badly. I do not actually go out of my way to look for mattifying products, its not in my area of interest. I need hydrating products, yes. I need oil-free products, yes.

But just not mattifying products as I think a tissue paper will do the trick alright and I personally feel that I do not want to damage my skin by asking my pores to stop producing oil. Do I sound weird? Alright, I think I sound weird, or rather my analogy certainly sounds that way.

Anyway, the word "oil-free" caught my attention. Haha. So I used the 10ml sample anyway. The light green gel has the distinct marine scent, which is usually associated with H20 products. It does have the cooling gel effect. Texture is more lightweight than its Face Oasis Hydrating Treatment hence it gets absorbed into the skin quite easily without leaving a greasy or sticky after feel.

On optimal skin condition, it works like a lightweight moisturiser, without extra hydration. However, on dehydrated skin, it is bad, real bad. It does nothing for the skin at all. I would think its more suitable for those with oily skin.
I used it on both day and night to see if there is any difference in the shine factor but I feel that the level of shine on my skin are about the same with or without the product so I would say the oil absorbing benefits just does not work on my skin.

Review : Clarins Clear Softening Peeling Gentle Renewing Lotion

Product Description

The 10ml complimentary sample is actually quite a cute bottle. See the illustration above? I like the bottle very much though the opening may be tad too big for such fluid. I only managed to use it for like 5 to 6 times so actually such short term usage may not be the review that you are looking for.
Alcohol is listed as the 2nd ingredient and fragrance is quite strong so these 2 points did not go well with me. Its recommended to be used on alternate nights before toner.
I did not follow the instructions that closely as I determine the usage by my skin condition before using it, especially since its considered as peeling which is certainly not welcomed on dehydrated skin like mine.

Contrary to what a peeling product should be, this renewing lotion is actually considered quite gentle on the skin. In fact, I did not feel that my skin have turned for the worst while using it. That was my greatest concern for peeling products. No redness or any sensitivity experience.
I used it on days when my skin is normal but sadly, I did not see any beneficial effect on those few times. Its supposed to be a gentle exfoliating product to get rid of dead cells but I think there are better products out there.
Then again, its just a mere 5 to 6 times so the result may not be that accurate.

Review : Etude House Pearl Extract Mask

Product Description
Essence mask sheet formulated with rich, hydrated moisture and pearl extract to promote glowing and vibrant complexion

I actually cannot remember how I got hold of this mask, I guess it could be a free gift from some of my purchases in Korea. They are quite generous with their freebies, which any hardcore beauty junkie will like.

The size of the sheet mask is wide but the cut-out areas fit my face nicely. Texture of the sheet is not too thick or too thin and still robust enough to withstand any tearing when I pulled it out of the packaging.
There is a slight scent which soon dissipated after a few minutes.

There is a subtle brightening effect but hydrating ability is not high enough for me. Note that, alcohol is the 5th ingredient in the mask sheet.

Alternatives to Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone, a powerful chemical lightening agent which has been used for decades to fade hyperpigmentation and dark spots, occurs naturally in many herbs and plants and, may also be produced synthetically. Due to its potency, hydroquinone is regulated by the FDA, and only 2% concentrations are allowed in over-the-counter cosmetic preparations, such as bleaching or fading creams. When applied topically, hydroquinone may cause an allergic reaction on the skin, and recent studies have suggested that hydroquinone may be a carcinogen, with long-term use of this potent chemical increasing the risk of skin cancer.

Arbutin:
Derived from the leaves of blueberry, bearberry, cranberry or mulberry shrubs, or from certain genus of pear, arbutin contains the natural form of hydroquinone, which will inhibit the production of melanin by the skin.

Azelaic acid:
Most commonly, this ingredient is used to treat acne but recent studies have shown azelaic acid beneficial for the treatment of skin discolorations, as well. Azelaic acid is made from the grains of wheat, rye or barely, and is usually found in creams at a concentration of 20%. Studies have shown it to be effective in treating melasma and inhibiting melanin production.

Bilberry extract:
A relative of blueberries, bilberry fruit contains tannins that have natural astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally used by herbalists to treat blood pressure and prevent the formation of blood clots, bilberry is also an excellent anti-oxidant. Recently, bilberry has proven useful for treating hyperpigmentation and sun damage due to its chemical composition, which includes botanical hydroquinone, vitamin A and vitamin C.

Kojic acid:
Derived from a fungus, kojic acid also inhibits melanin production in a similar fashion to hydroquinone. This ingredient oxidizes quickly and will turn brown if left exposed to air, so check the expiration date carefully and be sure to store in a cool, dark place, away from heat or light.

Lemon:
Used to lighten hair, bleach freckles and whiten faded or yellowed cotton clothing, lemon is a valuable home remedy women have been turning to for years. Lemons help brighten and clarify the skin with citric acid and vitamin C and may be applied topically to the skin with a cotton swab, straight from the freshly sliced fruit. However, fresh lemon juice can be drying to the skin so be certain to apply moisturizer after treatment to keep the skin hydrated.

Licorice extract:
A tyrosinase inhibitor, licorice extract is a potent skin lightener that disrupts melanin synthesis by the skin, and also has anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have suggested that licorice may be up to 75 times more effective than vitamin C in fading hyperpigmentation, and it may safely be used by anyone who is allergic to hydroquinone.

Malic acid:
An alpha hydroxy acid derived exclusively from apples, malic acid has protective and moisturizing qualities, making it ideal for use on sensitive skin, or those suffering from Rosacea or other skin concerns.

Vitamin C:
Vitamin C, also known as magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbic acid, ascorbyl glucosamine or ascorbyl palmitate, is a common ingredient found in many botanical skin lighteners that is also a first-class antioxidant. Although studies have indicated that vitamin C does inhibit melanin production at concentrations above 5%, most skincare products available over-the-counter are not quite this potent. For this reason, vitamin C should be used in conjunction with other treatments for a skin-lightening boost.

This Oasis Mist was part of my H20 haul back in March which I bought in order to be eligible for their free gifts. It was not my original intention to purchase it as its too big and bulky. However, since their only size of 180ml costs just $34.20, I thought, why not?

Scoring a 4.4 from 7 users at Makeupalley , most of them loved this product but definitely not me. I have been using this for more than 3 weeks but my impression of this since the first day have not changed. I am actually quite disappointed with it.
The mist is encased in such a big bulky bottle that made bringing it around less than convenient. The mist amount is more than fine but its still alright for me.
Claimed to have much benefits for the skin, due to its ingredients, I was filled with hope that its good stuff for my skin. However, I have yet to see any visible improvement to my skin, since the first day I used it.
Even when I tried using it when my skin was dehydrated, this mist failed to improve the condition. In fact, it did nothing to my skin. It just does what any other facial mist can do - refresh the skin.

Review : Skin Food Honey and Royal Jelly Mask Sheet

I was quite hesitant in using these 2 sheet masks which I owned as I have 2 bad experiences with Royal Jelly ingredient in masks, namely Skin Food Repairing Mask Sheet and Beauty Credit Nutritive Royal Jelly Mask. Zits appeared on my chin which took some time to subside. It was an unpleasant experience which I wanted to avoid but it just happened that during that week, my face did have some flaky patches on some areas which the older folks usually associate it with using cold water when your face is warm. Got my drift? The kind of patches I am refering to?

Anyway, I thought perhaps this sheet mask could probably do some miracle since it contains Royal Jelly, supposingly to be power food for the skin. And on the face, it goes.

The sheet is ridiculous wide with large cut-outs, I meant, I do not think that an average person will have such wide face. The large cut-out areas also meant that it did not cover some areas which I thought it should cover on my face, like the areas near my nose.

The texture of the sheet is thin but not that thin enough to be torn. I also do not quite like the fragrance. It doesn't smell like honey to me, but then again, I have a blocked nose then so it may have affected my sense of smell.

And the miracle which I was expecting it to perform? Yes, it certainly did do wonders to those patches, no more flaky patches immediately after the treatment though the skin does feel sticky which I cleanse it off with facial mist or water. Skin feel nourished and moisturised. There were no zits the next day too. Awesome!

Recently, my skin suffered because I had been sick for the past week hence I kind of neglected my skin while resting at home. So I decided to use the second sheet.

My dull and rough skin softened and was brimming with vitality, the redness near my nose was soothed after the treatment. I was surprised and elated.

Overall, I am satisfied with the results gained from this sheet mask, though the scent and the cut-out areas could be further improved.

When I first laid my hands on their bestselling product - their shea butter hand cream, it disappointed me greatly so I wasn't expecting the rest of their hand creams to be any much better. However, this cherry blossom is such a delight to have around, mainly because of the scent. It smells so wonderful, just like cherries. Very flowery indeed. 

And once when I applied it before entering into a meeting room, a male colleague commented that I probably have just touched up my make-up. Huh? Did it smell like..make-up?
 
Other than the sweet smelling fragrance, this hand cream boasts of its light, soft and moist texture. Moisturises my hands nicely, though it didn't last long, but the fragrance did, and I like it. Its a nice to have item but not neccessarily essential as it doesn't moisturise those really dry hands.

 
Actually I am so in love with the scent that I am contemplating getting their products in this range however, their prices kinda deter me.

So L'Occitane, please wait for me, when I am feeling abit..well...richer.

A perm at Actpoint - International Building

I went for a hair perm at Actpoint, my second time there, because of the cosy vibes, friendly service and non-pushy tactics. And its only $150 for a haircut, perm and hair treatment.
Hair treatment is only a 5 minute hair mask as far as I can see.

The great thing about being there is to be able to finish the whole process by 3.5hours. A remarkable short time for a perm and a remarkable affordable price in downtown Orchard. Where can you get something like this? It usually took me almost 5 hours to get out of a salon, mainly due to the stylist trying to squeeze in as many customers as possible, at the expense of my time. Yes, I paid for the service yet I have to wait for the stylist. In fact, its very common in most of the salons. The only exception are Supercuts at Tiong Bahru and Actpoint who really focus on me, the customer.

The salon is actually not very crowded, about 5 to 6 customers at any one time, in the small salon. There was a steady stream of regular customers though. Everyone worked as a team as there were only 2 stylists and 2 ladies who helped to wash and blow dry the hair. They did not let me wait long which I really like. In fact, thats the kind of treatment which I want from a salon but sadly it never materialized before this.
 
The stool where I am asked to place my bag was full of hairs which I think it could have been further improved before the customer arrived. In fact, all the stools beside each table are full of hairs.
The tea served turned cold after some time and there were no new refills. I believe they would have done so, if I requested but still, its just a minor flaw.
There were nice enough to ask if I require to visit the restroom which is good consideration on their part.
 
There were some very good promotions of the Redken hair products and Sophie was very honest with me, about their increasing prices hence they are trying to clear all these remaining Redken hair products. The shampoo and conditioners were going for 1 for 1 and its only $34 but I did not get anything in the end as I do not need any products except the curling hair products which were out of stock.

Actually, before she even told me about Redken products, she did not attempt to push products to me. Her opening sentence was, " You have hair styling products at home, right?"

Sophie did not give me a black face when I rejected the offer of Redken products. And she did not push me to get the hair colouring job too, she just asked me to think about it. And that was because I asked her if I need to do a hair colouring after my perm as I always felt that the style looks dated without colour.
 
While I like that she have layered alot of my hair to be thin enough for the perm but I think the layering started too high up, leaving some awkward ends which sprung out of nowhere.
And she also made a very basic mistake, instead of the curls turning inwards on both sides, she made all the curls turned towards 1 direction hence the right side become abit puffy in a stupid way while the left side turned out to be still alright. I cannot tolerate this mistake considering that she is a senior stylist but I am too nice to go back and have it redo again.

Total damage: $150

I have been lucky enough to receive the sample while visiting the store during a Beauty Credit Xmas preview party. Each member will receive a free goodie bag during the party. A one-to-one sales promoter will be tagging along with each member, introducing her to the various promotions. I believe sales commissions were involved because I have been to 2 different parties and when I did not get anything, I was shown a black face by the promoter.

I bought something during the 2nd party. I also did not quite like the idea of having someone tagging behind my back, I just feel hard to breathe. Its irritating, knowing that the promoter is just after sales and not really sincere about helping me with my skincare concerns. And I do wish to have the freedom to browse at my own leisure.

Knowing that this BB cream contains diamonds, I was of course excited to try it. Diamonds are girls' best friends, isn't it? I am not that sure if  #23 is the only available shade but thats what I see on the web and is also what I have been provided. I managed to use for about 8 times from the sachet. And its definitely too short a time for me to determine its whitening effectiveness but from these usages, I do feel that its not the one for me.

There is a nice herbal scent but the texture is abit drying and slightly thicker than other BB creams. Coverage is more than sheer, ( I would rate it as medium coverage) good enough to cover light to medium blemishes. However, because of the texture, I do find it hard to spread and blend into the skin. It seems cakey and emphasise the flakiness on my skin.

Skin appears brighter and oil control is better than expected. In fact, I only need to blot once at the end of 6 hours, for my combination skin. Note that at the time of usage, I have some weird flakiness on certain areas on my face hence, my skin oiliness may be lesser than normal.
I am shocked that it costs a whopping $129.90 for this BB cream. Why would anyone spent that amount on a BB cream? In fact, I think it would be much cheaper in Korea.

Review : Skin Food Juice White Cheek Mask

These sheet masks were from my November haul but the last sheet which I used up recently has a heavy chinese wine scent which I never noticed before. I am not sure if it have turned bad so I ended up throwing that away after 5 minutes. 

The second last sheet gave me some little red bumps on my cheeks so I let my skin rested a while before I used up the last one, which is unfortunately another sad case.
The first 3 sheets were nothing much to rave about as it did not give me any visible results at all.

That said, I want to add in that I am really impressed with the idea of cheek masks because thats the first area where pigmentation usually occurs. I think its an ingenious idea, as the affected areas get treated right away. Its one of he best seller under Skin Food but it just does not work for me at all.

The patches comes in a plastic tray but is always in the sachet with the tray emptied as the masks get tossed and turned by the various people who handled it. Its a pair of hydro gel patches, the kind of slimy and slippery type but not exactly wet. I never like hydro gel patches because it never seem to do anything for my skin.

I have been trying out the 5ml size for the past 2 weeks. I think it was a complimentary sample from one of the Biotherm parties attended. The great thing about being Biotherm member is to be able to attend their parties, with free delicious finger food, a small free goodie bag and the various product promotions available to members.

This is a new formulae after their detoxifying multi-defense fluid which of course, one would expect the latest one to be more superior.
Scent-wise, I found it to be almost similar to their predecessor. Not exactly but almost similar.
Its has a sunscreen scent and the texture is heavier than its multi-defense fluid. Its almost like one of those drugstore sunscreen like banana boat. Get what I meant?
Its white in colour and spread easily on the skin which is a bonus considering that its SPF 50. However, there is still a slightly greasy undertone base, which is normal for something that contains SPF 50.
 
However, when I tried to use it before my make-up base and followed up with my foundation, I felt that it gave a caky finish to my skin which I really hated. Curerntly I am using it together with my BB cream. Meaning I applied this sunscreen first, before my BB cream and off to work.

For those who are concerned, please note that it does contain dimethicone which may be pore-clogging to some people.

The cloth is made of superior material, heavily soaked in essence. Very comfortable on the skin. Skin feel much moisturised and unbelievably soft after each treatment.
Skin does not look that dull too.
It contains Vitamin C for antioxidant benefits, but its not that high up on the ingredient list though.

Review : Lancome Softening Hydrating Toner

This product retails at $50 for the 200ml version which I found it super expensive for a toner. I wouldn't want to spend that amount on toners but thankfully, I used a voucher to reedem this, after attending a Lancome make-up seminar.
I seriously didn't think it deserve that $50, for its just a refreshing toner on my skin, after using it for the past month. It didn't particularly give me any hydrating benefits. The only good thing about this, is that its alcohol free and being pH balanced which is good for the skin.
The floral fragrance is abit strong for me though.

The opening hole on the bottle is quite big which may have caused me to pour out more than necessary. Very wasteful. I hope they can improve on this, because it would have caused me to shorten the usage span for my $50 toner. lol.
I usually pour it over my cotton pad and swipe it all over my face.
