as part of The Sun Edit purchase from Cult Beauty.
Packaging, Scent and Texture
The Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Dew Balm SPF 30 comes in a 16.5g twist-up balm with a clear inner lid, although the packaging appears much larger than the actual amount of product. It features a refreshing watermelon scent that is pleasant without being overpowering.
In terms of texture, it has an oily, slick finish that glides effortlessly across the skin, reminding me of the Abib Quick Sunstick. The translucent balm applies smoothly with minimal tugging, making it quick and convenient for touch-ups throughout the day.
How To Use :
1) Before applying, warm the bullet up on the back of your hand.
2) For each area of skin, apply 4 passes back and forth as the last step of your skincare routine for optimal protection.
3) Ophthalmologist tested to be used all over face, including eye area
4) Continue to apply until you achieve your desired level of glow
5) Rub in any remaining product for an even layer of coverage
Performance and Ingredients
Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Dew Balm SPF 30 feels noticeably greasy, especially on my combination skin. Its rich, oily texture allows it to glide easily over the skin, but it also leaves behind a shiny finish that may not appeal to those with oily or combination skin types.
Rather than using it on my face, I found it works much better as a body sunscreen balm, particularly on my arms. Applying it feels similar to using a crayon as you simply swipe it back and forth several times to ensure even and adequate sunscreen coverage. The smooth application makes reapplying SPF on exposed areas convenient, especially when you're on the go.
I also prefer using SPF 50 and PA++++ for my face.
The 3 UV filters are....
Octyl Salicylate : Ethylhexyl Salicylate ( also known as Ethylhexyl Salicylate or Octisalate ) is an organic compound used as an ingredient in sunscreens and cosmetics to absorb UVB (ultraviolet) rays from the sun. Although the Cosmetics Ingredient Review notes that reproductive and developmental toxicity can occur in relation to Salicylic Acid, one of the two primary components of Ethylhexyl Salicylate, it has determined that the levels used in cosmetic and beauty products would not cause any adverse reaction. Importantly, the FDA has approved Ethylhexyl Salicylate for use in sunscreen with up to 5% concentration. Ethylhexyl Salicylate receives an EWG hazard rating of 4.
Homosalate : An organic compound that belongs to salicylates. It is an ester formed from salicylic acid and 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanol, a derivative of cyclohexanol. Salicylates prevent direct skin exposure to the sun’s harmful rays by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) light. Homosalate specifically absorbs short-wave UVB rays, which are associated with DNA damage and increased risk of skin cancer.
Avobenzone : Also known as Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, it appears to be relatively non-toxic and non-irritating to the skin. However, because it is often used in conjunction with photo-stabilizers, there is a greater risk for skin irritation and low-level toxicity. Furthermore, some studies have demonstrated it to be absorbed by the body and secreted into urine, and is therefore not recommended to use on children or pregnant women
However tests have revealed Avobenzone’s tendency to significantly degrade in light over time, lessening its sun protection capabilities. For this reason, most sunscreens containing the ingredient also include photo-stabilizing ingredients like octocrylene.
Do note that the ingredient list also contains Butyloctyl Salicylate, another chemical UV filter not registered as a sunscreen active yet.
Butyloctyl Salicylate : Helps to increase the SPF rating and enhance the stability of other UV filters like Oxybenzone and Avobenzone. It is not reef-safe. Currently not registered as a sunscreen active yet.
Said to be the modified version of the chemical UV filter Octisalate which was created intentionally by the sunscreen industry to avoid having Octislate on the ingredient listing as a declared active and used by formulators to disguise the presence of a ‘chemical’ UV filter in mineral sunscreen formulas. It is also used to reduce the amount of inorganic mineral filters needed to get a desired labelled SPF and PPD rating. (source)

UVA - Long wave ultraviolet A (UVA) rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the skin's thickest layer and causes premature skin aging, wrinkling and dark spots.
UVB - Short wave ultraviolet B (UVB) rays burn the superficial layers of the skin and is the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer.
PA - More + signs mean longer protection against UVA
SPF - Higher numbers mean longer protection against UVB

To conclude, Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Dew Balm SPF 30 is a convenient stick sunscreen that makes SPF reapplication quick and mess-free, especially when you're outdoors, with its smooth glide and the portable packaging makes it easy to carry in your bag.
However, the rich, oily texture was too greasy for my combination skin, leaving a shiny finish that I didn't enjoy on my face. I found it much better suited for reapplying sunscreen on my arms and other exposed areas of the body, where the balm glides on effortlessly and provides convenient coverage.
