Product Description
Mustela Very High Protection Sun Lotion SPF 50+ is specially designed for the delicate skin of babies and children. It protects their skin against UVA and UVB rays and is resistant to water and sand.
Suitable for face and body, this fragrance-free lotion is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, sun intolerant and atopy-prone skin.
Sometimes I like products formulated for children, as they are gentle for my sensitive skin such as EssentiQ Shower Gel and Shampoo 2 in 1 with Aloe Vera and Berries ( For Kids ), however, not every product is a perfect fit. I disliked Earth Mama Calming Lavender Baby Wash which was too drying.
Started since 1950, Mustela is a French family brand and is B Corp certified which refers to a business meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials.
Mustela Very High Protection Sun Lotion SPF 50+ looked promising so I added it to my cart, but unfortunately, it wasn't the one for me. Lets delve down to see why...
Packaging, Scent and Texture
Mustela Very High Protection Sun Lotion SPF 50+ comes in 2 sizes - 40ml and 100ml and the larger size always has a better value in terms of pricing so I chose that.
The light yellow runny contents were easy to dispense via the 100ml tube with a subtle sunscreen scent.
How To Use :
1) Generously apply on dry skin before exposure (face & body).
2) Reapply every two hours and after each swim.
Note : And don't forget Baby's hat, sunglasses and T-shirt!
Performance and Ingredients
Made in France, Mustela Very High Protection Sun Lotion SPF 50+ is fragrance-free, paraben-free, hypoallergenic, water and sweat resistant and tested under dermatological and pediatric control.
Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, sun intolerant and atopic-prone skin, it provides a very high protection against UVA and UVB rays and a very high resistance to water, perspiration and rubbing from towels or clothes.
Smooth and fluid, its lightweight texture is easy to apply but left a very greasy and shiny finishing which I disliked using on the face, hence I delegated it for the body instead as its easy to spread over a large surface area.
My husband uses it for his weekly swim but it stings the eyes so he uses it for his body thereafter so I cannot fathom why this stings his eyes when it is formulated for babies and children.
Mustela Very High Protection Sun Lotion is said to reinforce the skin barrier and preserve the cellular richness of babies' and children's skin from UV rays thanks to Avocado Perseose® and 86% of the ingredients are of natural origin.
At SPF50 25 PPD, this sunscreen helps to protect against UVA and UVB rays where an SPF 50 product protects you from 98% of the UVB “burning” rays that penetrate your skin and 25 PPD refers to blocking 90% of UVA rays, and is generally considered to be suitable for everyday use.
Persistent Pigment Darkening, or PPD, is a method that measures UVA protection. It is originally developed in Japan, tested through using UVA radiation to see how much it takes to cause a tan on the skin. PPD measures how tolerant your skin is to UVA. For example, if you apply a sunscreen with PPD10, it means that sunscreen protects you 10 times better than without sunscreen protection.
PA is the grading system, used to measure the level of protection against UVA rays. The system was adapted from the PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening) method and first used in Japan.
The SPF PA+ ratings go as follows:
If a product’s PPD =2 to 4, PA = PA+
If a products PPD = 4 to 8, PA = PA++
If a product PPD = 8 to 16, PA = PA+++
If a product’s PPD = 16 or higher, PA = PA+++
And the sunscreen filters used in the formula are....
Do note that...
Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate refers to Uvinul A Plus
Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid refers to Ensulizole
BisEthylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine refers to Tinosorb S
Aqua (Water), Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Glycerin, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Lauryl Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid, Titanium Dioxide, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Pentylene Glycol, Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Tocopherol, Glyceryl Caprylate, Sodium Hydroxide, Dehydroacetic Acid, Alumina, Xanthan Gum, Jojoba Esters, Propylene Carbonate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Fruit Extract.
To conclude, Mustela Very High Protection Sun Lotion SPF 50+ has received rave reviews online but isn't a good fit for my husband and I. It stings the eyes and the greasy and shiny finishing was awful on my combination skin and I had to use it for the body instead. It won't be a repurchase.
If you had tried this before, do let me know how it works for you!
