Supergoop Sunscreen Mist With Vitamin C SPF50 Review
Product Description
Give your skin a healthy dose of vitamin C while protecting it from the sun's damaging rays. Supergoop Antioxidant Infused Sunscreen Mist offers complete broad spectrum SPF 50 protection in a lightweight mist that's super easy and fast to apply. This non-aerosol spray sunscreen provides a continuous mist that can be applied to wet or dry skin for up to 80 minutes of water-resistant wear.

I have previously reviewed Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF40 and Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen Broad Extract ( Oat Extract ) but unfortunately, their textures did not work too well for my skin type.

Supergoop! is the first and only prestige beauty brand 100% dedicated to UV protection. Founded by former teacher and industry pioneer Holly Thaggard and a recipient of numerous industry awards, they are driven by creating innovative, efficacious and ingredient-conscious formulas that deliver broad spectrum protection in unique, feel good ways.

Packaging, Scent and Texture

Supergoop Sunscreen Mist With Vitamin C SPF50 is housed in an opaque non-aerosol spray bottle with 89ml of contents. I adore its twist-lock mechanism so that one would not accidentally spray it.

Unfortunately, I found the alcohol scent to be alittle too strong for my likes and the immediate application tends to leave a wet greasy layer on skin so I have to massage the areas to blend it in, leaving a light shiny sheen in its place.

How To Use :
- Apply generously and evenly 15 minutes before sun exposure.
- Reapply at least every 2 hours or after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating.

Performance and Ingredients

SPF is the #1 thing you can do for your skin. Free of parabens, synthetic fragrances and oxybenzone, Supergoop Sunscreen Mist With Vitamin C SPF50 has been clinically tested and determined to deliver broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Antioxidant Vitamin C is added to protect one from free radical damage while helping to fade dark spots.

Supergoop Sunscreen Mist With Vitamin C Review

I brought it along for my last Thailand trip where its always so sunny and hot, as an added protection on top of my regular sunscreen application for my arms and hands. The continuous mist makes it an easy application over large surfaces.

I use this primarily as a body sunscreen and I mainly spray it all over my arms and hands, and sometimes on my legs too, depending where I am heading to.

While I did not like the initial oily layer but once massaged in, its not an issue to me. I just didn't like the strong alcohol scent but since its used on my body, I don't mind it as much as compared to using it on the face.

It serves as a great companion during hot and humid weather, and a great addition on top of my regular sunscreen if I need to be under the scorching sun for long hours.

Lightweight and refreshing, its the easiest way to wear sunscreen and its literally perfect for those lazy ones. No more excuses for not wearing sunscreens - just point, spray and play! The bottle utilizes a unique bag-on-valve technology that Supergoop had been using since 2013. This makes the SPF itself free of chemical propellants ( eliminates gaseous skin irritating chemicals ), and it means you can spray it from all different angles (even upside down). It will also be completely emptied, so you can be sure that you are getting every last drop of SPF.

That said, the downside of sunscreen mist is that more of the product often ends up in the air than on our skin. This sub-par application can increase your risk of sunburn and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The effective way to use a sunscreen mist is to hold the can or bottle one inch from your skin and spray until it glistens and then gently rub them to get an even layer of coverage.

This SPF 50 is packed with powerful ingredients, a stable form of Vitamin C that is easily absorbed and helps counteract free radical damage, Green Tea Extract which is naturally rich in antioxidant polyphenols that protect skin from the damaging effect of free radicals, and acai extract which is a good source of vitamins A, C, and E, and omega 3, 6, and 6 fatty acids. This berry is a powerhouse of antioxidant protection.

Supergoop Sunscreen Mist With Vitamin C SPF50 provides broad spectrum protection, protecting against both UVA and UVB rays.

Avobenzone 3.0% :
Avobenzone, when applied to the skin, absorbs UV rays. In addition to causing sunburn, UV radiation is a significant cause of premature aging of the skin and contributes to the development of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.

According to this Truth In Aging, tests have revealed Avobenzone’s tendency to significantly degrade in light over time, lessening its sun protection capabilities. For this reason, most sunscreens containing the ingredient also include photo-stabilizing ingredients like octocrylene.

Avobenzone appears to be relatively non-toxic and non-irritating to the skin. However, because it is often used in conjunction with photo-stabilizers, there is a greater risk for skin irritation and low-level toxicity. Furthermore, some studies have demonstrated it to be absorbed by the body and secreted into urine, and is therefore not recommended to use on children or pregnant women

Homosalate 10.0% :
An effective oil soluble liquid UV-B absorber. It is an excellent solubilizer for crystalline UV absorbers such as Avobenzone or Ethylhexyl Triazone.

It is an organic compound that belongs to a class of chemicals called salicylates. Salicylates prevent direct skin exposure to the sun’s harmful rays by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) light. Homosalate specifically absorbs short-wave UVB rays, which are associated with DNA damage and increased risk of skin cancer. There have been controversial articles that state that Homosalate is a potential endocrine disruptor and studies in cells suggest it may impact hormones. In addition to direct health concerns following homosalate exposure, the chemical may also enhance the absorption of pesticides in the body ( source ).

You can read about all the different sunscreen chemicals here, done up in a comparison table by EWG.

Octinoxate 7.5% :
Often listed on sunscreen products as Octinoxate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (also called Octyl Methoxycinnamate) is used in products that are applied to the skin to absorb, reflect or scatter UV rays; it protects the skin from sunburn and other damaging effects of the sun. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate also protects cosmetics and personal care products from deterioration caused by UV rays and allows them to last longer in high UV conditions.

It is a chemical sun blocking agent that absorbs ultraviolet radiation in UVB range.
However, when Octinoxate is exposed to sunlight, "it is converted into a less UV absorbent form hence it is not very stable. This conversion can be partly prevented by certain other UV blockers, particularly bemotrizinol (Tinosorb M).
Note that if Octinoxate combined with Avobenzone, it degrades even faster.

According to the EWG, Octinoxate is a moderate hazard, primarily because it can lead to developmental and reproductive toxicity through enhanced skin absorption. It can produce estrogen-like effects and should not be used by pregnant women and children.

Octisalate 5.0% :
Octisalate, also known as Ethylhexyl Salicylate is used as an ingredient in sunscreens and cosmetics to absorb UVB rays from the sun. It is thought to be a weak sunscreen as it does not protect at all from UVA rays. Because of that, it is rarely used alone. Instead, it is typically combined with other chemical sunscreens, like avobenzone, on which it is said to have a stabilizing effect. The chemical degrades fairly quickly, though, when exposed to sunlight, so is unlikely to add much protection, particularly after you’ve had the product on for awhile.

Octisalate is also called a “penetration enhancer,” meaning that it can increase the amount of other ingredients passing into the skin. That means if there are other potentially hazardous ingredients in the formula (such as preservatives or fragrances), it can usher these ingredients much more deeply into the skin and potentially into the body. ( source )

According to EWG, Octisalate has a low-moderate hazard level of 4 as it can stabilize Avobenzone and result in longer lasting sun protection.

Octocrylene 10.0% :
According to Truth In Aging, Octocrylene can penetrate into the skin and act as a photosensitizer, resulting in an increased production of free radicals. Free radicals can induce indirect DNA damage and potentially contribute to the increased incidence of malignant melanoma in sunscreen-users. Maximum recommended by FDA is 3%. You can also read more about it in EWG.

As demonstrated in this research study, Octocrylene appears to be a strong allergen leading to contact dermatitis in children and mostly photoallergic contact dermatitis in adults with an often-associated history of photoallergy from ketoprofen. Patients with photoallergy from ketoprofen frequently have positive photopatch test reactions to octocrylene. These patients need to be informed of sunscreen products not containing octocrylene, benzophenone-3, or fragrances

Conclusion

To conclude, Supergoop Sunscreen Mist With Vitamin C SPF50 would be great for those looking for an easy way to apply sunscreen on the body with its point and spray mode. Slight massaging is required to blend in the greasy layer into the skin. While I didn't like the high alcohol content and the smell but I am less particular since the sunscreen is used on the body.

Its a great companion during hot and humid weather, and a great addition on top of my regular sunscreen if I need to be under the scorching sun for long hours.

If you have sensitive skin, do take note that this product contains Octocrylene. Overall, I won't purchase this sunscreen as there are still many sunscreens out there for me to choose from.

Supergoop updates/changes its formula pretty frequently and this sunscreen had since been replaced with Supergoop!Play Antioxidant Mist With Vitamin C.

Point to note is to choose sunscreen sprays labeled ‘broad spectrum,’ which shield your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, and select those with high SPF levels (at least SPF 30). Hold the can or one inch from the skin and spray until it glistens. As for the face, spray sunscreen into your hand first and then gently rub it over your face and ears (this will reduce your risk of inhalation of any gases or propellants).
