[ Review ] Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF40

Product Description
Ideal for sensitive and reactive skin types, Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40 delivers broad spectrum protection with a delicate touch. This gentle formula was developed with olive polyphenols, which are rich in Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and known to reduce the appearance of redness, irritation, and inflammation. Lightweight and hypoallergenic, this zinc oxide based lotion creates a physical barrier on skin's surface without leaving the pasty white residue that is commonly associated with mineral formulas. All Supergoop products have been clinically tested and determined to deliver broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

Hailing from USA, Supergoop, a sunscreen company, is founded by Holly Thaggard, a cheery former third grade teacher motivated by the simple yet powerful mission of stopping the epidemic of skin cancer. The brand ( not to be confused by Goop ) is vegan and cruelty-free. You can read more about it here.

I first stumbled upon Supergoop in Sephora and was intrigued by the clean yet sleek packaging so when there was a Supergoop value set on promotion, I quickly purchased a set to try out some of their products.

Packaging, Scent and Texture

My Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF40 comes in a 30ml size and not the full retail size of 71ml as its sold together as a value set, with other Supergoop products. I love the smooth slim tube, how aesthetically-pleasing it looked and how easy it is to get the contents out, by just a cap twist, pull off, depress slightly and the light moussy contents oozed out.

Unfortunately, it has the typical sunscreen scent which I don't fancy but is bearable. The texture is like a thin lotion that get absorbed into skin after a short while, leaving a very thin layer of greasy after-feel and no obvious white cast. However, there is a slight sheen on skin after application.

Moussy Texture
After spreading

I also noticed that after a period of not using the sunscreen, it has turned slightly moussy so do spread evenly on your palms before applying to the face, in order to avoid any debris. Oil and the lotion may also be separated, so do shake the tube before using.

Performance and Ingredients

Free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF40 applies easily and has a light greasy veil without being sticky or having any obvious white cast.

In terms of ingredients, it is misleading to name the product as a mineral sunscreen when it contains Octinoxate as one of its active ingredients. A true mineral sunscreen should include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as their active ingredients.

Mineral sunscreen ingredients form a barrier on the surface of the skin that helps reflect UV rays away from the skin. The only FDA-approved mineral sunscreen ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These physical sunscreen filters are ideal for both daily and prolonged, intense sun exposure because of their broad spectrum protection3 against both UVA and UVB rays. Mineral sunscreen filters are effective for reflecting UV rays when applied as directed, which includes applying a generous amount (one ounce for the entire body) 15 minutes before sun exposure.

On the other hand, chemical sunscreen ingredients penetrate the top layers of the skin to absorb UV rays. These filters absorb damaging UV rays before they can damage the skin. These sun protection ingredients include oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. Depending on the formulation, chemical sunscreens may be easier to rub into the skin and less likely to leave a white cast. Chemical sunscreen filters should also be applied 15 minutes before sun exposure.

Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate ( also known as Octinoxate ) is an efficient UVB filter. It is an excellent, globally-recognized UVB filter and is suitable for water-resistant sun care cosmetics. This product is a good solvent for powder sunscreens and achieves high SPF when used with other UVB filters. It provides partial UVA protection and full UVB protection. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate also protects cosmetics and personal care products from deterioration caused by UV rays.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted an OTC drug review of Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate and did approve it for use in OTC sunscreens up to a concentration of 7.5%. However, according to EWG, Octinoxate is an endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen and can disrupt thyroid function, with a moderate hazard level of 6.

But according to skincare guru, Paula Begoun, Octinoxate has a solid record of safety (decades of research and thousands of studies establishing its safety in sunscreens as indisputable). There are no studies that demonstrate octinoxate, when and as used in SPF products, is harmful. In the sole studies cited when such claims are made, the conditions are completely inapplicable to how sunscreen ingredients are used in skincare products as such studies typically use extremely high concentrations of octinoxate (much higher than would ever be used in sunscreens) or even fed to lab animals.
In fact, the European Union’s permitted usage level for octinoxate in sunscreens is higher than the maximum amount permitted in the United States (7.5% in the United States, 10% in the EU).

Other than the misleading ingredient, do note that the formulation also contains a preservative (methylisothiazolinone) that is known to be sensitizing when used in leave-on products. It isn't a large amount, but this preservative is a poor choice for sensitive skin.

Taking these concerns aside, Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF40 can actually be a pretty nice sunscreen with a blend of antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and skin-repairing ingredients which help offset daylight and heat damage although the concentration for these ingredients are low.

Conclusion

To conclude, Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF40 is not something I would repurchase due to its slight sheen and moussy texture if left used for some time. And since there are always new sunscreen products coming up every other month, I believe I would be able to find a better sunscreen with a more elegant texture. And just to add on that, at the time of writing, Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen SPF40 has since been discontinued.

Other physical sunscreens worth considering would be Axis-y Complete No Stress Physical Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++ and Lapothicell Natural Mineral Sun Protection SPF 50 PA++++
