Krave Beauty has been on my wishlist for awhile but when I was in Korea in 2018, I didn't manage to get them so when Krave Beauty reached out to me for a collaboration, I was incredibly thankful! Thank you so much, Kim, for sending these products to me, all the way from Korea!
The great news for all Krave Beauty fans is, Krave Beauty now ship to Singapore and Malaysia via the global website here! Hooray! Do note that all prices are stated in USD. If you reside in US, check out the website here and for orders in Korea, check out the website here.
Krave Beauty was founded by beauty influencer, Liah Yoo, to fight the ineffective yet conventional skincare routine that has trained you to apply more than what your skin actually needs by creating skincare products that work with your skin, not against it. You can read more about it here.
In tune with its "less is more" philosophy, the brand only has 5 products under its belt, namely, Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser ( cleanser ), Great Barrier Relief ( serum ), Oat So Simple Water Cream ( moisturiser ), Beet The Sun ( sunscreen ) and Kale-Lalu yAHA ( exfoliator ). However, the cleanser " Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser " is not available for purchase in Singapore and Malaysia, due to Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) Seed Oil, as it has not been officially approved for cosmetic use in Singapore and Malaysia.
Their products are cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, fragrance-free and essential oil-free.
The brand speaks to me, because for years, I have always advocate " less is more " in my skincare routine. You would never find me using 10 products in a routine. In fact, my routine has always been simple - cleanse, tone, moisturise. And from there, add on a sunscreen in the day and a make-up remover in the night. Eye cream for both day and night. I may add on a serum for a specific need.
On top of this, I also always make sure I depleted a product before starting on a new product because I believe every product requires time to weave its magic and its never good to keep switching products as your skin may not be able to take it.
In this post, I will share my honest thoughts on Krave Beauty Beet The Sun SPF50+ PA++++ and Kale-Lalu-yAHA.
Krave Beauty Beet The Sun SPF50+ PA++++ is a gentle, antioxidant-rich day fluid that protects your skin from harsh environmental stressors. It is a lightweight, non-white cast leaving formula that’s charged with beet root extract and antioxidants to fight against the free radicals so you don’t turn beet-red.
Beet the Sun provides broad-spectrum sun damage protection using a blend of advanced chemical (organic) UV filters. Enhance further with Beetroot extract, it is said to counter the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, blemishes, scarring, leaving an overall radiance. Add to this is Allantoin that deeply soothes skin and relieves skin irritation. A mix of Vitamin C, Resveratrol, EGCG also boosts the formula with its antioxidants benefits to provide further protection and promote the regeneration of damaged cell structures.
Love the pun on the name which correlates to the key ingredient used! Do note that The Beet Shield sold in USA is of the same formula as Beet The Sun. You can read the full reason for the background of the different names here. I love how honest and transparent Liah Yoo is, with her products, ingredients and it just makes me more inclined in trying out Krave Beauty.
Beet The Sun SPF50+ PA++++ comes in a bright pink and white plastic packaging with a small area where you can write the name if its a gift. Such a thoughtful gesture!
At 50ml size, the bottle is small, slim and portable which is such a travel friendly size. Similar to the plastic packaging, the description on the back of the bottle is in Korean language while essential information about the product is in English printed on the front.
The pointed tip nozzle is small, much smaller than other sunscreens I have used before, so you can control the quantity required. That said, the structure of the opaque sturdy plastic bottle made it difficult for one to judge the remaining contents.
Pale yellow in colour, Beet The Sun has a subtle sunscreen scent with a hint of alcohol and a gel-lotion texture that is easy to spread with a slight cooling sensation. No white cast and isn't sticky but it does have some shine on my combination skin.
The lightweight consistency meant that it applies smoothly, evenly and absorb pretty quickly so that you can start applying your makeup thereafter. Since my RMS Beauty "Un" Powder helps to mattify the skin, the shine is a minor issue for me, but if you have combination or oily skin and use it alone, then you may find your skin looking shiny.
My usage routine : Dr. Lewinns Private Formula Sensitive Cleansing Milk -> May Coop Morning Dew Mist -> Krave Beauty Great Barrier Relief -> Krave Beauty Oat So Simple -> Krave Beauty Beet The Sun
For the uninitiated, SPF ( Sun Protection Factor ) refers to a measurement of how long you can stay outside during the day and be protected from the sun’s burn-causing UVB rays. The letters “PA” followed by plus signs (PA+, PA++, PA+++, and PA++++) on a label are a rating system developed in Japan to represent how much UVA protection the product offers, with PA++++ referring to extremely high UVA protection.
A sunscreen with SPF50+ PA++++ is something which I looked for, in an ideal sunscreen. When used correctly, SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays while SPF 100 blocks 99 percent so the difference is negligible.
And with our daily lives involving electronic devices which all emit blue light, you would be glad to know that Lithospermum Erythrorhizon Root Extract is known to filter out the blue light emitted from such devices. Studies have found that Blue Light can cause hyperpigmentation, redness and inflammation. It also stimulates the production of free radicals in skin, which can accelerate the appearance of aging.
Beet The Sun SPF50+ PA++++ contains the following key ingredients :
Beetroot extract : An underrated yet amazingly antioxidant-rich vegetable, the beetroot holds skin enhancing properties like preventing signs of aging, reducing pigmentation and blemishes and moisturization! A true underdog superfood.
Allantoin : Soothes skin and relieves skin irritation. This is an absolutely wonderful ingredient which brings both moisturizing and soothing relief to a sensitive, inflamed skin.
Vitamin C, Resveratrol, EGCG : This powerful tag team of antioxidants is proven to shield skin against external stressors and neutralize free radicals.
Do note that alcohol is listed as the 5th ingredient in the list which, according to Krave Beauty, serve to stabilize the UV filters, create a lightweight consistency and as a solvent in the formulation.
The formulation was tested with NO irritation on a small test group. (The clinical trial was done by Global Medical Research Center that follows Frosch and Kligman and The Cosmetic Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) guideline)
However, if you are someone who’s suffering from rosacea, or severe skin condition, it is not recommended to use Beet The Sun.
The product uses the following sunscreen ingredients :
Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate : A new generation, chemical sunscreen agent with high UVA protection and high photostability. Also known as Uvinul A Plus.
Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine : A broad-spectrum ( full UVA and UVB protection ) chemical sunscreen agent which is also known as Tinosorb S. Hardly deteriorates in the presence of UV light and is useful in stabilizing other less stable sunscreen agents, like the UVA protector, avobenzone.
Ethylhexyl Triazone : A new generation, chemical sunscreen that gives the highest photo-stable absorption of all available UVB filters today. Also known as Octyl Triazone.
Isoamyl p-Methoxycinnamate : A chemical sunscreen agent with UVB protection. Also known as Amiloxate.
Polysilicone-15 : A chemical sunscreen agent with UVB protection. It also help to stabilize the famously unstable UVA filter, avobenzone and works especially well with Ensulizole to achieve high SPF protection.

Conclusion
To conclude, Krave Beauty Beet The Sun SPF50+ PA++++ is a great sunscreen for most skin types, except that it may look slightly greasy for those with combination or oily skin. It is non-sticky and absorbs well with no white cast. For those sensitive to alcohol, you may want to take note that this product contains alcohol as one of its ingredients. This sunscreen may be a great addition to a dry skin skincare routine.
Krave Beauty Kale-Lalu-yAHA is skin resurfacing exfoliator that kicks your dead skin cells to the curb, revealing youthful, healthier skin while also feeding it delicious antioxidants from dark, leafy greens. Kiss good-bye to the appearance of discoloration, sun damage, and fine lines with regular use.
The name can be quite a mouthful but I love how the product looks like a bottle of Kale Juice! It comes in a 200ml clear plastic bottle with a metal cap that creates a screeching sound that makes my hair stand whenever I twist open/close the cap. As much as I hope the cap can be changed but I think it would affect the aesthetic look.
Similar to the Krave Beauty product range, essential information is printed in English while most of the description is in Korean language. For someone who always like to read the description, ingredients and how I can use the product effectively, I actually spent some time reading their website prior to using it.
Why? Because I am a beginner when it comes to acids and although I do use AHA before, I don't use it very often and don't really specifically buy them, however I do have issues with blackheads on my nose so I believe this product would be a good option for my needs.
Hence, being a beginner, I was at a loss on how to use the product initially. While it did mention that it can be used at night, 2 to 3 times a week or after cleansing, I still want to know the exact information in order not to risk hurting my skin. ie. Is it meant to be used as a daily toner, since it states that it can be used after cleansing? Is it alright if it stings? I got all my answers from the website and the blog. Go read it! Its pretty informative!
How To Use
By book : 2-3 times a week before bed, soak a cotton pad with Kale-Lalu-yAHA and swipe over clean face, avoiding the eye area. No rinse needed.
In real life : There are no rules. Slide Kale-Lalu-yAHA into your routine based on your skin’s cravings. Liah uses Kale-Lalu-yAHA 2 to 3 times a week while her mom uses it every night :) Pay attention to your skin's resiliency as everyone's skin is unique.
If you're a beginner : AHA 5.25% is a great concentration to start if you're a AHA beginner. At first, you can mix Kale-Lalu-yAHA into your favorite moisturizer. This concoction would act as a buffer slightly interfering AHA with fully absorbing into your skin. Then move it up to your first step in your evening skincare routine. Try it once a week then build it up to the frequency that your skin is most comfortable with.
Watch the video to understand more about Kale-Lalu-yAHA!
Light green in colour, Kale-Lalu-yAHA is runny and applies effortlessly with cotton pads. It has a subtle kale scent and the runny texture sinks into skin pretty quickly. Initially, I started using it once a week and then moving on to twice a week. Each time, there is a mild stinging effect for a few short seconds immediately after application. There is no redness or tightness.
For my combination skin with surface dehydration, there would be times when my skin is dehydrated and on those days, using Kale-Lalu-yAHA in the night would make my skin super oily the following morning.
As such, I felt that this product is best used when my skin is at optimal skin condition so that I can reap maximum benefit. On well-moisturised skin, after using Kale-Lalu-yAHA, my face is left feeling cleaner, smoother, softer and less clogged.
While blackheads on my nose and the slight pigmentation spots on both cheeks are still apparent, I do have hope that I may see improvement once I depleted the bottle.
My usage routine : Dr. Lewinns Private Formula Sensitive Cleansing Milk -> Krave Beauty Kale-Lalu-yAHA -> Krave Beauty Great Barrier Relief -> Krave Beauty Oat So Simple
Do note that the side effects of alpha-hydroxy acids include mild irritation and sun sensitivity. For that reason, sunscreen also should be used every morning. And this is also why Kale-Lalu-yAHA is recommended to be used in the night.
According to Liah Yoo, the pH level is 3.5 to 4.0 which is the most effective.
" AHA is the most effective in the pH range of 3.0-4.0, so you might feel a slight tingling sensation at first, but don’t stress — that’s a good sign! It means the formula is giving your skin love! We do not recommend using the product on days your skin is sensitive. AHA may increase your skin’s photosensitivity, so apply broad-spectrum sunscreen liberally (which we hope you are doing nonetheless!). "
Kale-Lalu-yAHA contains the following key ingredients :
Glycolic Acid (Sugar cane derived) 5.25% : A real game changer in your skincare routine! Glycolic acid is an effective chemical exfoliant that gently resurfaces skin texture and prevents clogged pores. With regular use, this nudges your skin’s cellular turnover slowly, fading the appearance of hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and fine lines.
Dark, leafy greens (kale, spinach, parsley) : A vital energy booster for the skin, the antioxidants packed in these greens are the best thing you can treat your skin with—and that’s why we call it Kale-lalu-yaha! Not just that, it’s also chock-full of vitamins and minerals too.
Aloe + Hyaluronic acid + Vitamin B5 : These are all natural hydrators which replenish, hydrate and soothe skin. Once you apply, you’ll feel instant hydration, especially if you pair this with a moisturizer that locks down it all down.
Allantoin : Soothes skin while buffering any possible irritation from the chemical exfoliation process. An absolutely wonderful ingredient which brings both moisturizing and soothing relief to a sensitive, inflamed skin.
