As a brand under Amore Pacific, Mise-en-scène is a stylish hair cosmetics brand with the philosophy of directing customers’ hairstyles and personal images close to perfection. The brand’s name, Mise-en-scène, is a French term meaning arrangement of a scene, such as in theatre and film where Mise-en-scène helps customers enjoy new styles or develop their own personal style.

Made in Korea, Mise En Scene Perfect Repair Serum ( Light ) comes in a 70ml gold-orange plastic bottle with a pump dispenser that has a cap. It has a lightweight texture that is slightly slippery and has a silicon-feel. It works great on damaged hair ends, leaving it soft and smooth without any stickiness, greasiness or weighing it down.

As the name implies, this is a light serum so its best for those with thin, weak or oily hair types or those who dislike heavy textured serum and also recommended to those who are first-time users to hair serums.

I started off with 1 pump and slowly worked my way up  to using 3 pumps of serum, with fear that it may weigh down my hair but thankfully, there is no such issue at all. I prefer using 3 pumps for my long and thick tresses, leaving my hair softer, smoother and much neater and manageable.

However, the effects only lasted as long as you use the product as I don't see any long term benefit to my hair after almost depleting the whole bottle.

It is recommended to warm the contents in your palms before using, so once you pump out the serum, just rub them between the palms for a few seconds before running them through your hair. You will instantly feel/see a difference to your hair strands for that day.

In terms of ingredients, it contains 7 different types of oils, with Argan Oil, Camellia Oil and Coconut Oil having a higher concentration than other oils.

Argan Oil :
Full of fatty acids and rich in Vitamin E, Argan Oil had been shown to lubricate the hair shaft and help your hair maintain moisture. It tames frizz, keeps your hair moisturized and protects against styling damage and damage caused by free radicals. This can result in less breakage and shedding.

Camellia Oil :
Camellia oil is an excellent emollient oil. It helps smooth down the hair cuticle, promotes shine and keeps flyaways in check. There are 3 types of camellia oil, namely Camellia Sinensis Oil, Camellia Japonica Oil and Camellia Oleifera Oil and the most popular one is Camellia Japonica Oil, used in this product.

Coconut Oil :
A fatty, edible oil that penetrates deeply into the hair shaft, which may lead the hair to feel softer and smoother. The oil helps fill the hair shaft, making dry and damaged hair look healthier. Helps to reduce frizz, promotes hair growth and adds shine.

However, according to an owner of a hair salon, he believes that oil does not work well on damaged hair or hair which requires moisture due to the fact that oil and water don't mix. Oil repels water and either pushes it out of the hair or stops it from getting into the hair.

"If your hair has been damaged from over-processing from colour, or is weak and fragile, you need to get amino acids into the hair shaft, so definitely don't want to coat your hair in oil.
Hair oils - and especially coconut oil - tend to seep into every tiny hole in your hair shaft and disguise the real problem to act as a quick-fix; this won't help your hair in the long-run and is one of the main reasons I advise against using oils in your hair." ( source )

With that in mind, I did some snooping on the net and found this research study, stating that oils play an important role in protecting hair from damage. Some oils can penetrate the hair and reduce the amount of water absorbed in the hair, leading to a lowering of swelling. This can result in lower hygral fatigue (repeated swelling and drying), a factor that can damage hair. The oil can fill the gap between the cuticle cells and prevent the penetration of the aggressive substances such as surfactants into the follicle. Applying oil on a regular basis can enhance lubrication of the shaft and help prevent hair breakage.

Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft.

Argan oil is rich in tocopherols and polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants. It is extracted from the kernels of argan fruits that have been sun-dried for either a few days or up to several weeks. The fruit drying time influences the quality of the extracted oil.

To sum it up, research has demonstrated that oils can protect your hair from damage and prevent hair breakage but the quality of oils differ from product to product. The best way is still to use it and see/feel the difference.
