Six Budget Superfood
Tuesday, November 29, 2011
If you’re keen on a super diet without breaking the bank, here are some alternatives.
1) Blueberries
Blueberries are a top choice of those promoting superfoods, and there is no doubt that they are high in potassium and vitamin C. A 100g serving packs 77mg of potassium, 9.7mg of vitamin C and 6mg of calcium, among others.
The alternative
The humble pineapple packs a punch nutrition-wise. A 100g serving offers 97mg of potassium, 15.2mg of vitamin C and 24mg of calcium.
2) Kiwi fruit
Touted as a nutrient-rich food, the New Zealand export has more potassium than bananas or citrus fruits and is an excellent source of vitamin C. A 100g serving boasts 180mg of potassium and 86.7mg of vitamin C.
The alternative
While the guava may not boast a high concentration of potassium (29mg per 100g), it is still packed with nutrients. A 100g serving boasts 152mg of vitamin C, 10mg of vitamin A and 33mg of calcium.
3) Pomegranate
Pomegranates are being hailed as a superfood that can protect the heart. A 2004 BBC report states that scientists in Israel have shown that drinking a glass of pomegranate juice daily could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. A 100g serving of the fruit has 236mg of potassium, 10.2mg of vitamin C, 10mg of calcium and 4g of fibre.
The alternative
The dragon fruit may lose out to the pomegranate in terms of calcium (8.8gm) and fibre content (0.9g of fibre) but it is way ahead where potassium (436mg) and vitamin C (14.5mg) are concerned.
4) Red wine
A glass of red wine each day keeps the doctor at bay, so we’ve been told. The idea behind this stems from something called the French Paradox. Researchers noticed that despite their high-fat diet, the French have 40% lower occurrence of heart disease than the Americans. This has been attributed to their consumption of red wine, which has large doses of the antioxidant resveratrol. A 100ml serving of red wine has 0.198mg to 0.713mg of resveratrol.
The alternative
If you’re a teetotaller or would like to stick to a budget, don’t despair. There are alternatives like grape juice, jackfruit and peanuts.
5) Salmon
Like blueberries, salmon is a favourite superfood, thanks to its rich bounty of omega-3 essential fatty acids. A 100g serving contains 2,950mg of omega-3 and 490mg of potassium. We’re told to eat salmon two to three times a week to lower our heart disease risk and help prevent arthritis and memory loss. We’re also told to eat wild-caught salmon rather than farm-raised ones because of the chemicals that have been found in the latter.
The alternative
Indian mackerel (ikan kembung) is a great source of omega-3, with a 100g serving boasting of 1,450mg of omega-3 and 370mg of potassium. Sure, it’s not as chockfull of omega-3 as salmon but the humble mackerel offers more calcium (48mg compared with 12mg in salmon, per 100g serving) and iron (1.8mg vs 0.8mg) and has less fat (3.9g vs 6.34g). Another good alternative is canned sardines.
6) Wheatgrass
One of the more trendy nutritional wonders, wheatgrass (taken as a juice) is said to have beneficial effects on one’s cholesterol level, blood pressure and immune response, as well as prevent cancer, thanks to its high concentration of chlorophyll.
The alternative
To enjoy the benefits of chlorophyll, look for green vegetables such as broccoli or spinach. A 30g serving of spinach offers 128 mg of potassium (compared with 42 mg per 30ml of wheatgrass juice), 26 mg vitamin C (10mg) and 30mg calcium (7.2mg).

Review : Dr. Morito Q10 Firming Eye Mask
Friday, November 25, 2011
I picked this up from Taiwan during my last trip in May this year.
Here's some trivia bit about Dr. Morito.
Beauty specialists from Taiwan Professional Beauty Hospital researched and produced Morita Roberta. Technology is provided by JAPAN (TOKYO)-based company and manufactured in Taiwan. Manufacturing process supervised under the company in Japan.
8 individually wrapped sachets in each box. In each sachet, a pair of white cresent-moon shaped wet patches are stuck to each other, and you need to peel both apart to be used on the under eye area.
It can be very wet at times, leaving it dripping on the face, hence it can be quite irritating.
The scent is nothing offensive or nice, just something refreshing on the tired eyes. Having it in a fridge is a good treat every time. However, as with all eye masks, it is just a temporary relief to look less tired.
The undereye area feels and looks soothed but nothing awesome to shout about. I did not see any visible improvement after using the whole packet.

OPI Katy Perry #1 The 1 That Got Away
Wednesday, November 23, 2011
If you know me well enough, you may understand that I have the hots for mini stuff, because I get to finish the product in a shorter time, giving me more choices in new products.
This is considered expensive, at $8 a pop, since its so tiny when I could get $10 for the original size in Hong Kong.
Then again, its mini and is in dark shimmery red, which is something I have been looking around lately. Matt colours are starting to get boring.
This is my very first OPI, since I do not really dabble in nail polishes that much. The mini brush that comes with it, is good for amateurs like me. This dark fushia red with tiny shimmery bits looks apt for a Christmas party. The first coat wasn't that impressive, with a light translucent red colour but 3 coats later, I am loving it. It has a watery consistency which requires more than 3 coats to reach the opacity I preferred.
Review : Ma Cherie Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner
Tuesday, November 22, 2011
Shampoo Description
This shampoo contains the newly innovated mositure ingredients, with high penetrating ability to keep hair shine and elasticity. Give you beautiful and outstanding hair color. Natural flower scent
Conditioner Description
This conditioner contains the newly innovated mositure ingredients, with high penetrating ability to keep hair shine and elasticity. Give you beautiful and outstanding hair color. Conditions your hair to silky, smooth, and nurished. Floral scent.
Ma Cherie, a drugstore line from Shiseido has gives one a feminine and girly feel, with its sweet pink colour.
I have previously reviewed its shower gel which I did not quite fancy, due to its drying effects.
I brought both the travel sized 50ml shampoo and conditioner to my recent Hong Kong-Macau trip and while its not that particularly impressive, its decent enough for a daily wash.
Both products give a sweet floral fragrance which do not linger after a wash. The shampoo lathers easily and produces much foam, to give a luxurious wash, while the conditioner conditions the hair ends well enough.
Combined together, it gives softness to the hair, though I still have some tangled ends which is normal for me.
I don't hate it but since I am on the path to using natural hair care products, this set is not for me.

Review : My Beauty Diary Hyaluronic Acid Moisturising Mask
Monday, November 21, 2011
Product Description
Intensely moisturizing sheet masks drench skin with hyaluronic acid treated to a special hydrolysis process for effective microcirculation, purification and hydration within skin's layers. Moisture shield maintains skin's optimum hydration level, while coralline combined with algae and oat extracts provide nonstop nourishment for a remarkably healthier and brighter complexion. Best for dry and fatigued skin.
Yet another MBD mask from my haul whenever I visited Taiwan. My main focus is always hydration, followed by whitening and finally, firming.
I did had pleasant experiences with the past several MBD masks so I was looking forward to using this mask when I bought it.
However, if one read the ingredient list at the back, you would have realized that the Hyaluronic Acid ingredient purported as the main ingredient in this sheet is actually near to the bottom of list, which simply meant that the concentration is pretty low. In fact, the first few ingredients are aloe, apple, lemon, pineapple and grapefruit.
HA is a naturally occurring substance found in skin, collagen and other areas of the body. It attracts and binds water within the cells of the skin and tissue underneath, to retain a supple, firm skin tone and youthful appearance. It is able to effectively penetrate the skin and assist in the delivery of other important ingredients to aide in the healing and restoration required in the maintenance of supple skin. You can read in more details here
This sheet mask is quite a disappointment. Having use it in rainy weather in Singapore and humid weather in Hong Kong, it failed to impress me. I need something moisturising and this just doesn't make it to the mark.
And yes, the skin does feel bouncy and hydrated immediately after removing the mask but the effects do not stay at all. The skin still feels parched and dry, with flakiness and dullness being apparent the next morning.
It does not have an offensive scent and while the material of the mask is thin and adheres closely to the skin, the cut-out near the lips is abit small and on the eyes area, it falls abit low on my face which meant that it does not quite cover the under eye area.

Review : Love and Toast Sugar and Grapefruit Hand Creme
Thursday, November 17, 2011
Paraben free, Phthalate free, Never animal tested, No animal ingredients, No artificial colors, Packing paper sources come from 100% annually renewed resources.
Love and Toast sugar grapefruit hand cream, the second last mini tub from my 5 mini tubs purchase from SoapnSorbet. Whimiscal designs on each hand tube make a delightful Christmas present for anyone who receives it, especially during this Christmas season.
I love the pretty girly packaging but if it does not work, then its not on my to-get list. This hand cream, failed my expectations yet again, with the last 3 tubs I have used before. Perhaps its just me and my dry hands. You may have better luck with it.
The lovely milky-white cream has a fluffy-like and light texture that goes on smooth but failed to sufficiently hydrate the skin on my hands. It made the skin drier and requires repeated application.
The scent, like usual, is unique and one of a kind. Smells sweet.
Key Ingredients :
Shea butter, Macadamia nut, Olive fruits, Avocado and Sunflower oil, love and toast's "can't live without it" botanical perfume blend
Ingredients :
Extracts of Pomegranate and Green Tea in Purified Water, cyclopentasiloxane, stearic acid, isopropyl myristate, cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), persea gratissima (avocado) Oil, tocopheryl acetate (Vitamin E), glycerin, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, carbomer, tetrasodium EDTA, tocopheryl acetate, phenoxyethanol, caprylyl glycol, ethylhexylglycerin, hexylene glycol, triethanolamine, love and toast botanical perfume blend.

Review : Crabtree and Evelyn Wisteria Bath and Shower Gel
Wednesday, November 16, 2011
Product Description
Indulge in a deliciously long shower or bubble bath scented with our fresh and delicate Wisteria fragrance.
Rich lathering shower gel, Foaming bubble bath, Delicate floral fragrance
Fragrance: The delicate fragrance of wisteria blossoms and white lilac with hints of sweet violet.
The 50ml shower gel I owned comes from a Christmas set I bought last year. I usually like to save my travel sized products for travelling and I finally remember to bring it along for my Hong Kong-Macau trip earlier this month.
I tagged along a friend of mine who is a C&E member to get special discounts for Christmas sets. Usually, around Christmas time, there would be special prices for C&E members for their products, 30% discount, if I remembered correctly.
I hardly purchase CandE products nowadays as I am trying to incorporate more natural items into my bodycare products.
This shower gel from the Wisteria range, contains SLS which usually leave a tight taut feeling on the skin after wash. Surprisingly, I experienced none of these effects with this shower gel.
It glides on damp skin smoothly, producing foam easily for a pampering wash. The fragrance comes on abit too strong though.
Review : Canus Goat's Milk Lip Balm
Saturday, November 12, 2011
Product Description
Goat's Milk has long been known as a rejuventor of the skin. Goat's milk contains the highest percentage of naturally occurring compounds which help to moisturize the skin and contribute to its softness. Ever wondered why goat's lips are so soft? The reason is simple, it's because of the Canus Goat's Milk Lip Balm! Lightly fragranced with a hint of spearmint, Canus has combined goat's milk with an un-petroleum base and have managed somehow to get it all into one of those little tubes. In order to stay away from those yucky waxy petroleum formulations, Canus has combined goat's milk with virgin olive oil, organic beeswax, organic soybean oil, organic hemp seed oil and spearmint essential oils.
Features :
Natural, Petroleum free, ultra moisturizing
No animal testing
Made with fresh goat's milk
Helps prevent and temporarily protects chaffed, chapped, cracked or windburned lips
I believe this is a brand unfamiliar to most people, including myself. In fact, I cannot even remember when I bought this. I still have several brand new lip balms in my stash, either from overseas trip or online hauling from The States.
Out of Singapore, lip balms usually has a more broader selection in terms of pricing and brands selection which made it a good-to-buy item if I see one on the shelves.
The yellow base with a greasy texture has a spearmint flavour which burned my lips during my initial application for the first week. It was a hot sensation and although it did not make my lips swollen and red but it was really uncomfortable. It came as a surprise because the only time I ever experienced that, is with Neutrogena lipbalm which was my first non-natural lipbalm after I started the switch to natural lipbalms more than 2 years ago.
Its glides on the lips well but most lipbalms did a good job in that. It moisturises the lips well but not very well on severely chapped lips. You can check out the detailed description of the ingredients here.
In my opinion, its nice and all that but just not wonderful enough. It still cannot beat my Yes To Carrots lipbalm. If you are interested, you can get it cheaper at US$2.30 at iHerb. Use OKI787 to get US$5 off your first order.
Its mentioned here that the active ingredients are Octinoxate (7.5%), Oxybenzone (3%) which may not be preferred by some people. Check out what EWG says about it.
Ingredients
Organic virgin olive oil, organic virgin olea europaea oil, organic beeswax, cera alba, organic soybean oil, organic glycine soja oil, spearmint essential oil, essential oil of mentha viridis leaf, organic hemp seed oil, organic cannbis sativa seed oil, goat's milk, vitamin e, tocopherol, rosemary leaf extract, rosmarinus officinalis leaf extract, comfrey leaf, symphytum officinale leaf, calendula flower, calendula officinalis flower, st. Johns Wort, hypericum perforatum.

Review : Lovemore White Crystal and Platinum Peptide Whitening Duo Lifting Mask
Friday, November 11, 2011
Product Description
The latest “turning back time lifting” mask fits your face and neck perfectly! It fights against gravity, lifting the skin at your neck, mouth area, cheek, eye area. White crystal and platinum peptide has effective whitening effect.Colloidal Platinum revitalize, strongly moisturizes and protects the skin, enhances its ability to take in nourishing minerals, recharge, re-hydrate and protect the skin leaving it healthy, brightening skin.
This is the first range from Lovemore which I tried many months back after I did some hauling directly from Taiwan in May.
This is also the one which had me breaking out in zits for each of the 3 masks I used. 1 free zit contributed by each mask used.
I stopped using it for almost a month and gradually started incorporating in back to my skin regime. ( 1 box contains 10 masks in Taiwan, in Singapore, there are 5 masks in 1 box, if I remembered correctly ). Thankfully, nothing happened to my skin for the rest of the 7 sheets.
Similiar to the previous hydrating mask which I have reviewed before, the size, cutting and texture of the mask are almost the same, with the so-called 3D effect - hooks that allowed you to hook onto your ears from the jaws up, and from the neck up. It left a gaping hole near the nose because its being pulled too tight to the ears.
I didn't feel the WOW effect even after using up the whole box. There is a subtle brightening effect which lasted till the next morning. Nothing that other brightening masks can't offer. It did what it is supposed to do, but so do other brightening or whitening masks.
The hydrating effect isn't that great, in fact, the flakiness that were on my chin are still apparent after my mask treatment. At times, it still left a drying after-feel on the skin after the stipulated 20minute treatment. I didn't like it at all, not one bit.
It retails for $8.90 at local Watsons for 5 pieces.
Hong Kong Trip
Wednesday, November 9, 2011
Boo! I actually prepared a scheduled post last Friday to inform my readers that I will be off for a short trip but well, somehow it did not get posted out.
I just came back from Hong Kong last night after a 5 day trip visiting Hong Kong, Shenzhen (1day) and Macau (1 day). That just meant that I did not spent alot of time in Hong Kong, but mainly around the MongKok area, near my hotel.
This 2nd trip of mine, affirms that most Hongkongers are just an impatient and rude lot. I don't want to sound spiteful or snobbish but thats the vibes I receive from most of them. If I thought the service in Singapore is poor, Hong Kong is worse. At least, in my opinion.
If I follow up with a 2nd question, the person would spat back/shout back the answer. Or the auntie or uncle behind me in the queue will be poking or pushing me away with their paper bags when they realized that you are taking more time than necessary. (hello, I am only asking a question, which is less than 3 mins)
I had a more pleasant encounter with the simple folks in Macau and Tai-O, off Lantau Island though.
In Macau, my hubby and I were searching for St Paul Ruins and a couple, seeing the map in our hands, offered their help, followed by an old lady walking behind me, who came forward to ask where we were going.
In Tai-O, a man, upon seeing how we were lugging our luggages to find our inn, gestured widely and even asked us to follow him as he brought us to the inn we were looking for. And that is, when both parties do not understand one another. He spoke in Cantonese while we tried to reply in Mandarin.
A renovating construction guy at the inn, offered to carry my luggage down 3 flights of stairs. ( He was renovating the 2nd floor units, while I stayed on the 3rd floor ).
A young chap offered to carry my luggage down the bus steps when we were alighting from the bus at Tung Chung Bus Terminal. I can see that he's been taught well at home by his parents. :)
I could have share more about my trip but I like to keep this strictly to a beauty blog, so here's my haul. Some items are not necessary cheaper in Hong Kong, but I just get what I think it suits me.

If you are into nail polishes and happened to be in HK, you can check out the shops at
G/F 222 Temple Street Jordan, Kowloon (alight at Jordan MTR)

I happened to stumble upon these shops during my first trip in Hong Kong and realized that many Singaporean patronize these shops too. Apparently, they sell cheaper nail polishes and hair products than Singapore.

Tel : 2388 2226

I happened to stumble upon these shops during my first trip in Hong Kong and realized that many Singaporean patronize these shops too. Apparently, they sell cheaper nail polishes and hair products than Singapore.

I have always been skeptical of slimming lotions and potions so I hardly spent money on them. To me, diet and exercise are the perfect combination to achieving a svelte body though I am far from that.
However, after reaching the big 3, maintaining my present weight is getting increasingly difficult. After hearing raves from a good friend of mine, who credited this cream for getting her back to her pre-prenancy weight and losing all cellulite gained from her pregnancy, I decided to pay $130 for 2 bottles at DFS airport and started applying it on alternate nights.
Some ugly truths about my body for a better reference. I am petite with an inclination towards a pear-shaped figure. I exercise moderately, once or twice a week. Currently, I am into running and yogalates (fusion of yoga and pilates). I have cellulite on the back of my thighs and hips.
This slimming potion has been raved since it was first launched many years ago. I am not sure if the formula has been changed but the name does sound more fanciful than before.
Recently, this product has also received the Reader's Choice and Editor's Choice under the Body Toning/ anti-cellulite category in the annual Her World awards. You can see the list of winners here.
Pink in colour with tiny beads in it, this refreshing cream-gel texture smells minty. After application, there is a cooling and tingling sensation on the area. However, I do find my hands very dry after using it, most probably by the high alcohol content.
For maximum effectiveness, its recommended to follow their massage steps enclosed in a booklet which comes together with the product. However, my friend did not follow those steps and is still able to achieve the figure she wanted.
I managed to find an excellent video on the Clarins massaging steps
It seems easy enough which is good as the likelihood of people following through the steps would be higher.
In my case, I followed through the massage steps for the first week ( based on my own interpretation, to the best of my knowledge from the pictures and description ) and saw results after 5 applications. I used it on alternate nights and on my exercise days.
My jeans become looser on my thighs and hips! Its been about 1.5 months since my first application and my jeans is still loose, but not anything further than that "after 5 days" effect.
However, I failed to see any toned or vanishing cellulite on my thighs. Note that, I did not follow their massage methods every time but I will try to, if I am not tired or lazy. lol.
Still, I am happy that it did work partially. Read all about the product here.
It retails for $82 at Clarins counters, however you can easily ask for a sample to try out the texture first.
It score 4.2 from 18 reviewers on Makeupalley
