Preventing Stretch Marks

Stretch marks, also known as striae scars, are those unsightly red, purple or white stripes caused by the sudden stretching of the skin. Most people get stretch marks from weight gain or pregnancy.

A couple of ways to prevent stretchmarks, as deemed in the article.

1) A well-balanced diet. A healthy diet makes the skin healthy and you are less likely to have stretch marks when you have healthy skin. Eat foods that are rich in zinc and vitamins A, C, E and D. These nutrients help the body to produce collagen, a protein important in tissue repair. These vitamins also have anti-oxidant properties that can protect your skin from damage. Drink eight to ten glasses of water a day to keep your skin well-hydrated and supple.
Loading up on fruits and vegetables also helps prevent the formation of unwanted marks.

2) Exercising. Exercise promotes blood circulation which ensures that more nutrients are absorbed in your skin cells. Of course, exercise is a good way to lose weight or prevent weight gain that could cause stretch marks. The more weight you gain, the increased likehood of stretchmarks.

3) Taking care of the skin. Moisturize often to keep your skin soft and supple. Choose products that do not have irritating ingredients and if possible, go organic. Look for products with natural ingredients such as cocoa butter, lavender oil, fish oil and Aloe Vera extract. Vitamin-enriched products, especially those with Vitamin A and E, will nourish and protect your skin from damage.

4) Rubbing your belly with lotion when you are pregnant. This will help keep your belly moisturized and help prevent stretch marks.
Vitamin E is known to help decrease your chances of getting stretch marks during pregnancy. It helps the skin stay more subtle which means that it will be more resilient after it stretches.

5) Massaging and exfoliating your tummy helps increase its elasticity.
