pdc Wafood Made Sake Lees Face Pack is a facial pack featuring Japanese Sake lees extract to make your skin nourished, clear and smooth. Sake lees (or Sake kasu in Japanese) is the remaining yeast from sake fermentation.
I purchased the PDC Wafood Made Sake Lees Fermented Rice Pack from Don Don Donki some time ago, and it has become one of the face packs I reach for whenever my skin looks dull or needs a little exfoliation. The 170g pack lasted me quite a while, making it a relatively value-for-money addition to my skincare routine.
My recent mask pack empties were PDC Wafood Made Uji Matcha Pack and Lindsay Modeling Mask Cup Pack.
What drew me to this Japanese skincare product was its use of sake lees, a traditional by-product of sake brewing, combined with a distinctive rice-like texture.
Packaging, Scent and Texture
PDC Wafood Made Sake Lees Fermented Rice Pack comes in a soft, squeezable pouch with a plastic nozzle for convenient dispensing. The packaging makes it easy to squeeze out the desired amount without having to scoop the product from a jar.
The texture is quite unusual, resembling little blobs of rice. It feels refreshing and cooling when first applied to the skin, making the application experience rather pleasant. There is also a noticeable sake fragrance, which adds to the sensory experience of using this Japanese face pack.
The formula is thick and adheres well to the skin without sliding around. However, this also means it takes quite a bit of water to rinse off completely. I prefer to gently wipe away most of the product with 2 damp cotton pads before rinsing my face with water. This makes the removal process more manageable.
How To Use :
1) After you wash your face, gently wipe your face.
2) Apply the pack and spread on your face except on eyes and mouth.
3) Let it stay for 5 - 10 minutes and rinse it off with water or warm water.
4) Recommended to use 2-3 times a week.
Performance and Ingredients
Made in Japan, the PDC Wafood Made Sake Lees Fermented Rice Pack combines sake lees with moisturising ingredients and botanical extracts to help leave the skin feeling smoother and looking fresher.
Sake lees (sake kasu) is the main ingredient that makes this face pack interesting. It is the fermented rice residue left over from sake production and has attracted research interest for its potential skin-brightening properties.
A 2021 study published in the Journal of Japanese Cosmetic Science Society, titled Inhibition of Tyrosinase Activity by Sake Lee Extract, investigated extracts of sake lees prepared using different water temperatures and ethanol concentrations. The researchers found that certain extracts significantly inhibited tyrosinase activity in laboratory testing. Tyrosinase is an enzyme involved in melanin production, making this a potentially interesting area of research for cosmetic ingredients targeting uneven skin tone. However, these were laboratory findings, not proof that this particular face pack will lighten pigmentation in everyday use.
The formula combines moisturising and emollient ingredients with sake lees and is marketed for improving dullness and skin texture.
After each masking session, my skin looked brighter, and my pores appeared cleaner. My complexion also felt very smooth and looked fresh. I particularly enjoyed reaching for this face pack on days when my skin looked tired or lacked radiance.
The key ingredients are...
Sake lees essence, fermented rice bran extract: Effectively promotes skin metabolism, improves dry skin, prevents melanin and brightens skin.
Cucumber extract: Soothing, calming, moisturizing.
Yuzu Seed extract: Rich in Vitamin C.
Water, Propanediol, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Glycerin, Triethylhexanoin, Hydrogenated Rapeseed Oil, Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Polysorbate 60, Extract, Aspergillus/Rice Ferment Extract, Hydrolyzed Yeast Extract, Cucumber Fruit Extract, Saccharomyces/Comemans Fermented Liquid Extract, Yuzu Seed Extract, Persimmon Fruit Extract, Isomerized Sugar, Crystalline Cellulose, Oxybenzone, Arginine, Stearic Acid, Butylene Glycol (BG), Ethanol, Sodium Acrylate Grafted Starch, Polyacrylic Acid, Ammonium, Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide, Aluminum Hydroxide, Caramel, Carbomer, Citric Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Fragrance.
Conclusion
To conclude, PDC Wafood Made Sake Lees Fermented Rice Pack is a lovely rinse-off mask pack to the appearance of dull, rough-looking skin. Its distinctive rice-like texture, refreshing feel and sake lees-inspired formulation make it an interesting addition to a skincare routine.
For me, the appeal was how smooth and fresh my skin looked after each use. Although I would have preferred more hydration and an easier rinse-off process, the 170g pack offered good value for money and lasted me a long time.
I would happily reach for this face pack whenever my complexion looks dull and needs a little refreshing. Just remember to follow up with a facial sheet mask or hydrating moisturiser, especially if your skin tends to feel dehydrated after cleansing.
