Rich in AHA and antioxidants, hibiscus flowers are nature's powerhouse for the ever so important Vitamin C, leaving skin healthy, glowing and radiating! This ultra pretty face mask leaves you with the cutest pink mask ever!

I purchased 3 products from a local brand, Handmade Heroes, used up the 2 body scrubs and is now left with this face mask. The brand is 100% natural, vegan and cruelty-free with no parabens or preservatives. Their pricing is reasonable as well, which makes their products a pretty good gift for your beautyholic friends during birthdays and Christmas. So how does Handmade Heroes Beauty Warrior Hibiscus Vitamin C Boost Face Mask fare?

The Hibiscus Vitamin C Boost Face Mask is pink in colour, with powdery contents. In a bowl, mix 2 spoonful of face mask with 3 - 4 spoonfuls of water, depending on your preference of consistency. This requires alittle more effort than our usual face mask so it may not be ideal for those who are always pressed for time and looking for convenience.

I made some silly mistakes initially and I thought I was the only one, until I stumbled upon Rohai's experience and I was like, hey, you too!

So you see, the description on the tub is exact - mix all in a bowl but I thought my palm suffices - because I am just plain lazy. I cupped my palm like a bowl ( yes, please go ahead and laugh ), poured the powder into my palm and then droplets/spoonfuls of water into my cupped palm. The contents overflowed and got wasted all over my sink. ( To prevent wastage, I scooped them up to scrub on the back of my palms because why not. )

The powder will soon turn into a paste and you can happily spread it on your skin. The mask is thin in consistency and applies well so one 70g tub actually lasts me for quite awhile, with once a week usage. I don't use this as often as other masks because of the AHA capability which makes it more like an exfoliating mask.

Hibiscus extracts or "flower acids" have been in the spotlight lately due to it being a natural source of AHA which most love for its ability to unclog pores, stimulate new cell growth for smoother and younger skin, fight against wrinkles and aging skin. ( source )

A staple in Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese herbology, Hibiscus is traditionally consumed as tea to treat various digestive, respiratory, and urinary ailments. But due to its high vitamin and mineral content, its organic compounds have also become a common ingredient in many beauty products. ( source

The AHAs found in hibiscus, specifically malic acid and citric acid gently exfoliate and brighten skin, helps with hyperpigmentation and skin clarity. Unlike the conventional AHAs, the AHAs in hibiscus actually helps to repair UV damage to skin, instead of temporarily thin out the top layer of skin making it more susceptible to sun damage. This is because such "flower acids" contains antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties to strengthen the skin's support matrix and firm the skin. Hibiscus combats aging by limiting the activity of elastase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down the elastin that keeps our skin firm and healthy. By preserving and protecting the elastin you keep your face looking younger, and firmer, longer.

According to this source, flower acids from hibiscus are said to be
50% more hydrating
  • 20% greater cellular turnover than AHA’s and salicylic acid
  • 30% reduction in appearance of wrinkles by inhibiting elastase and hyaluronidase breakdown of connective tissue

And now, you know why hibiscus is getting so popular.

In Handmade Heroes Beauty Warrior Hibiscus Vitamin C Boost Face Mask, 5 minutes is all you need for the mask to dry up and be rinsed off because anything more than 5 minutes is going to make your skin pretty uncomfortable. You will see cracks on the clay-like mask and how dry and hard it has become. There will also be a taut sensation on skin.

I wouldn't recommend this mask for those with severely dehydrated, sensitive or delicate skin though. Why? Because my nose edges were red and inflamed, where broken capillaries are, after rinsing off the mask. Yes, my skin is brighter, super duper smooth and the pores on my nose are cleaner but I don't feel comfortable seeing how harsh it is to the sensitive areas on my face. I kept reminding myself to skip that part while doing the mask but I always forget and then regretted it. It is such a norm for me to slather the mask on my whole face and that has been a habit for years.

A gentle reminder is to use a toner after the masking, to ensure there are no pink remnants leftovers on the face.
