Dermalogica Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 Review

Product Description
Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defense SPF 30 is an invisible mineral sunscreen that is ideal for sensitive skin that easily blends with all skin tones and defends against blue and UVA/UVB light. This sheer, weightless broad-spectrum physical sunscreen features non-nano zinc oxide that protects against blue light, UV rays, free-radical damage, and pollution.

Benefits:
-Blends easily on all skin tones
-Helps defend against UVA/UVB/blue light
-Soothes all skin types - even sensitive

Physical sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens have become a go-to choice for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. Unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb UV rays, physical sunscreens work by forming a protective barrier on the skin’s surface that reflects and scatters harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Formulated with minerals like Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, physical sunscreens are often praised for being gentle, non-irritating, and effective immediately upon application although they have a dreary white cast.

I decided to redeem the Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defense SPF 30 using my credit voucher after signing up for a facial package at AsterSpring. Having recently finished both the Dermalogica Circular Hydration Serum and Dermalogica Skin Perfect Primer SPF 30, I was curious to see how this sunscreen would perform alongside my other physical/mineral sunscreens.

I always keep a physical sunscreen in my arsenal especially for morning exercises or long walks under the sun. My recent go-to physical sunscreens were the Foretderm Derma Relief Vegan Suncream and Klairs All-day Airy Mineral Sunscreen, both of which I’ve already emptied.

Packaging, Scent and Texture

Dermalogica Physical Sunscreen Texture

The Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defense SPF 30 comes in a compact 50ml tube, making it easy to slip into a bag for daily use or travel. It has a creamy, lotion-like texture with a subtle hint of lavender that feels soothing upon application.

While it blends fairly well, it does require a bit of gentle massaging to minimize the initial white cast, which becomes less noticeable once fully absorbed.

How To Use:
Apply liberally to face, preferably 30 minutes prior to sun exposure.

Performance and Ingredients

Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defense SPF 30 spreads easily and once fully blended, the sunscreen feels lightweight and comfortable on the skin. It leaves a slightly dewy finish, though it can accentuate dry patches—a common trait among many physical sunscreens.

During outdoor walks and sunny mornings, it offered reliable broad-spectrum protection without causing any irritation or breakouts. As with most mineral formulas, it’s best to apply in smaller amounts and take time to blend for a smoother, more even finish.

The key ingredients are....

Ultra-Sheer Zinc Oxide: Protects against both blue and Broad-Spectrum UVB/UVA light.
Bioactive Mushroom Complex: Soothes skin and visibly reduces UV-induced redness and dryness.  Antioxidant-rich Matcha Green Tea: Protects skin from free-radical damage.

The only UV filter is Zinc Oxide which is a natural ingredient that forms a protective shield on top of the skin, effectively scattering and reflecting both UVA and UVB rays.

However, do note that it also contains Butyloctyl Salicylate, a chemical UV filter not registered as a sunscreen active yet.

Butyloctyl Salicylate : Helps to increase the SPF rating and enhance the stability of other UV filters like Oxybenzone and Avobenzone. It is not reef-safe. Currently not registered as a sunscreen active yet.
Said to be the modified version of the chemical UV filter Octisalate which was created intentionally by the sunscreen industry to avoid having Octislate on the ingredient listing as a declared active and used by formulators to disguise the presence of a ‘chemical’ UV filter in mineral sunscreen formulas. It is also used to reduce the amount of inorganic mineral filters needed to get a desired labelled SPF and PPD rating.  (source)

To conclude, Dermalogica Invisible Physical Defense SPF 30 is a gentle and dependable mineral sunscreen that delivers daily UV protection without irritation.
