In the ever-evolving world of skincare, technology-based devices are taking center stage, and one standout innovation is LED Light Therapy masks. Designed to deliver professional-grade skin benefits from the comfort of your home, these futuristic masks use specific wavelengths of light to stimulate skin repair, reduce inflammation, and combat common skin concerns like acne, fine lines, and dullness.
What is LED Light Therapy?
LED (Light Emitting Diode) Light Therapy is a non-invasive skincare treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin at different depths. This process stimulates the mitochondria in skin cells to produce more ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy source cells need to function. With this boost in energy, skin cells work more efficiently, increasing collagen and elastin production, which helps to smooth fine lines, improve skin elasticity, and enhance overall skin health for a more youthful, radiant complexion.
How LED Light Therapy Benefits Your Skin
LED Light Therapy is backed by science and used by dermatologists and estheticians worldwide. Each light color targets specific skin concerns:
- Red Light (Anti-Aging & Collagen Boosting): Stimulates collagen production, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and enhances skin elasticity. (study)
Blue Light (Acne-Fighting & Bacteria Reduction): Kills acne-causing bacteria, reduces breakouts, and controls oil production. (study)
Yellow Light (Soothing & Brightening): Helps calm redness, improve skin tone, and accelerate healing.
Near-Infrared Light (Deep Repair & Anti-Inflammatory): Penetrates deeper into the skin to promote cellular repair and reduce inflammation.
CurrentBody reached out to me for a collaboration in exchange for an honest review earlier this year. Prior to this, I have never thought of using an LED Light Therapy Mask at home. I have tried something like Dermalux Flex MD LED Light Therapy Device in a professional facial salon once but I was not comfortable as it felt claustrophobic and I had serious breakouts on my chin for almost a month (over-stimulation by the facial therapist that includes deep massage, facial and LED device).
CurrentBody is a UK company started in 2009 which specializes in home-use beauty devices selling across 87 countries and 99 different brands from 22 localised websites. Their hero products include CurrentBody Skin Light Therapy Mask which appeared in Season 3 of Emily in Paris, a popular TV series on Netflix.
Backed by clinical studies, their own brand also developed different products like RF Device, LED Hair Growth Helmet, Laser Hair Removal, etc. They also sell other brands such as ZIIP, FOREO, TriPollar, NuFACE and Clarisonic. You can read about the founders on their website .
Dipping into the world of LED Light Therapy at home for the first time can feel overwhelming and like many beginners, I had my fair share of concerns, particularly about the safety of prolonged LED exposure on the eyes.
Thankfully, Joyce from CurrentBody assured me that the CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 is FDA-cleared, meaning its LED lights are safe for the eyes and designed for effective, non-invasive skincare. However, it’s important to note that LED Light Therapy masks are not recommended for individuals with photo-sensitivity issues or during pregnancy.
In this article by Vogue, dermatologists recommends one to choose masks that are labeled as FDA-cleared and to wear blackout or opaque goggles or find masks that come with the appropriate eyewear. According to Dr. Mariwalla, prolonged exposure to blue or red light without proper eye protection can damage the eyes while Dr. Nussbaum says certain people with eye-related disorders (like ocular albinism or congenital retinal disorders) or people who take medications that make them more sensitive to light may experience blurry vision, eye pain, eye irritation, or changes in vision. More serious problems include irreversible peripheral vision loss or complete impairment.
In general, it is best to use LED masks as directed - which can include wearing protective eye googles, keeping your eyes closed and affixing the mask to your face correctly - and the devices should not pose a high risk for eye health, according to Dr. Michele Green.
If you have any visual symptoms that arise after using a mask, like blurry vision or other sight distortions, stop using the mask immediately and see an eye doctor.
Packaging, Fitting and Texture
CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 is designed in the UK and manufactured in China. Each package comes in a large white box with the LED mask, a CurrentBody storage bag, a USB-C charging cable, a clip-on controller, a multiway strap, 2 eye inserts, a Veritace® card and an user manual.
The CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Mask is made from flexible, clinical-grade silicone, designed to contour comfortably to the face. It offers full nose and chin coverage while remaining soft and pliable. To enhance wearability, the mask includes a black multi-way strap with adjustable velcro, shaped in a U-design on each side for a more secure fit. Additionally, an extra strap is included for the top of the head to prevent slipping during use.
Unfortunately, while the straps are adjustable, the velcro tends to shed tiny black debris onto the mask’s inner surface, especially where the LEDs are positioned. They are not the easiest to clean off and these debris may cause slight tickling or irritation around the nostrils at times or end up on the face too. And if you have long hair like me, it is best to tie it up as they tend to get tangled with the velcro.
Adding on, while the mask lays flat and snug on the upper face, there is a gap around the lower face, particularly near the mouth and chin. If secured too tightly, it may leave temporary indentation marks on the upper face. The gap may/may not be due to the optional eye inserts which I used in every session to shield my eyes from the bright LED lights, affecting the overall fit of the mask on the lower half of my face though. However, it seems that I am not the only one experiencing this gap, judging from the comments in Reddit forum.
That said, you will be happy to know that each mask comes with its own unique Veritace® NFC card enclosed in an envelope. Every Veritace® product features an NFC card which allows one to trace it back through the Veritace® journey, from sourcing through to product quality testing.
This unique Veritace® production process guarantees that every single Series 2 sold offers unparalleled coverage and precision of wavelengths, maximising user results. It provides an extra layer of confidence in the product’s reliability. Just tap the card against your phone and ta-daa! - here's mine!
How To Use :
1) Cleanse your skin and pat dry.
2) Attach the mask, then adjust the strap around your head
3) Switch on, sit back and relax for 10 minutes. The mask will automatically switch off when your treatment is finished.
4) Remove the mask from your head and wipe clean.
Expert Advice: Use 3 to 5 times a week as part of your morning or evening skincare routine. With consistent use, it can result in firmer and more radiant skin in 4 weeks.
Note :
A USB-C cable is provided, to fully charge the device for 4.5 hours via the clip-on controller to a suitable USB charger. Once fully charged, the white light on the clip-on controller will stop flashing and turn solid white. It will flash orange when the device requires recharging (typically after the 10th use).
Performance and Ingredients
CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 contains 236 bulbs, with an irradiance (power density) at 30 mW/cm2 and Fluence (energy density) at 18 J/cm2 :
110 red (633nm) LED bulbs : Boosts collagen production, reducing fine lines and wrinkles
110 near-infrared (830nm) LED bulbs : Energises cells to firm, tighten and brighten skin
110 near-infrared (830nm) LED bulbs : Energises cells to firm, tighten and brighten skin
16 deep near-infrared (1072nm) LED bulbs : Targets areas where signs of ageing are more pronounced, boosting collagen production deep under the skin. This wavelength has been shown in scientific evidence to be highly effective for skin renewal and wrinkle reduction, penetrating up to 10mm into the hypodermis to stimulate collagen production deep below the surface of the skin.
These are clinically-proven wavelengths (the same as professional salon machines) to reach up to 4cm of skin tissue and stimulate the cells from within. The right wavelengths at the right dose deliver optimal results.
Based on this research study, Red light therapy (630–700 nm) works by reaching the deeper layers of the skin, where it stimulates collagen production and helps keep skin firm and youthful. It also boosts skin repair by activating key proteins that support healthy skin structure. (study)
Near-infrared light (700–1200 nm) goes even deeper, promoting faster healing by improving blood circulation and oxygen flow to the skin. This makes it especially beneficial for reducing inflammation, repairing damaged skin, and speeding up recovery from wounds or breakouts. (study)
In terms of irradiance, where it refers to the dose of energy delivered by the LED system per surface area of skin treated and is expressed in watts per square centimeter (W/cm2), this study demonstrated that the optimal clinical intensity or irradiance is considered to be around 50–100 mW/cm2. However, this research study has demonstrated that lower irradiance (<50mW/cm2) is less likely to induce skin hyperthermia leading to potential deleterious effects while fluences in the range of tens of J/cm2 are likely to be protective and overall beneficial to the skin, while fluences in the range of hundreds of J/cm2 are likely to be damaging and overall deleterious to the skin.
Michelle from Lab Muffin Beauty Science has recommended to get a device closer to the above parameters and CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 falls within these recommended parameters.
Adding on, CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 uses an innovative patented pillow technology, which ensures that each wavelength is evenly diffused for optimal skin coverage and maximum effectiveness.

Pardon my unglam picture |
It would be nice, if there is a guide somewhere, with instructions on how to wear the mask for a secure fit.
The device is said to be 100% pain free and does not generate heat, making it comfortable to wear. It is designed to deliver results without any discomfort or burning sensation. However, I did notice a subtle warmth on my upper face after removing the mask. Thankfully, this warmth disappeared quickly and did not cause any irritation, making it a minor observation rather than a drawback.
The clip-on controller that comes with the mask also makes it easy to move around but I prefer to just sit on the bed, do some leg exercises or relax during the 10 minutes as part of my self-care routine, while keeping my eyes closed.
Like most skincare treatments, consistency is key when using an LED mask, and results take time. To gradually introduce it into my routine, I started with one session every two weeks, then increased to once a week, followed by twice a week and eventually progressed to thrice a week. Pairing the mask with the right topical skincare products can further enhance its benefits, helping to achieve optimal results over time.
Right after an LED masking session, my skin felt noticeably smoother and looked clearer, with improved absorption of serums, moisturizers, and facial masks. To maximize the effects, I prefer applying a hydrating sheet mask post-LED therapy, which leaves my skin even softer, smoother, and more supple.
Additionally, when I notice a new zit forming, I follow a targeted approach: I apply a pimple cream ( I use L/Chemy Breathe) directly on the spot after completing my LED session, and then use a hydrating or calming sheet mask. This combination helps to reduce redness and inflammation, making the blemish subside faster.
I had a mild headache once, but thankfully, no such symptom with subsequent usages.
After 2 to 2.5 months of regular usage, I noticed my skin felt plumper, looked more even-toned, less tired-looking and less prone to hormonal breakouts on the chin. The pigmentation spots on my right cheek lightened and looked much less obvious.
Conclusion
To conclude, I am so glad to have tried out my very first LED Light Therapy Mask! My skin feels plumper, more even-toned, and less fatigued, with fewer hormonal breakouts on my chin. Even my pigmentation spots have visibly lightened, making them far less noticeable.
To truly test its effectiveness, I even postponed my monthly facials, relying solely on this mask to see how my skin would respond with consistent use together with my regular skincare routine. The verdict? During a recent visit to a new hair salon, the stylist assumed I was a decade younger—until I entered my details and revealed my real age. Oops! While I’ve always looked younger than my actual years, I genuinely believe this LED mask has taken it up a notch.
CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Mask Series 2 is FDA-cleared where it meets the necessary regulatory standards for safety and effectiveness. Products with FDA approval have gone through intensive testing to be deemed safe and effective for their intended use, while those with FDA clearance have been reviewed by the administration and determined to be substantially equivalent to a legally marketed device.
I think it is important to be using a at-home device that has been studied and deemed safe and effective, since there is no professional and a consumer is left to be in charge of their own treatment, hence auto shut-offs and timers in an LED Mask are much appreciated. Each device comes with 2 years warranty against manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship so it is best to purchase it through official channels for a seamless purchase and refund experience with good customer support.
A 2018 study found no adverse events associated with the use of these devices and little to no downtime for the patient, making LED therapy a safe and effective option for all skin types.
Dr .Jonathan Kentley concludes that using any form of LED technology is unlikely to cause damage to cells but more research is required to understand what it can do. He feels that many experimental and clinical studies out there were small and unstandardised and often paid for by the manufacturers so it is difficult to draw concrete conclusions. He suggests to choose one that has EU safety certifications and a high density of LED bulbs on the mask to ensure enough energy is being delivered to the skin
For the uninitiated, CurrentBody states that they comply with a code of conduct approved by a supervisory authority in the European Union and certified under an approved certification mechanism as provided for in the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).
Dr. Justine Kluk believes that such LED technology needs a good skincare routine and that it is unlikely to do enough on its own. And if it's severe like acne, a good prescription regimen and some lifestyle measures are required.
If you’re looking for an effective, science-backed, and non-invasive way to enhance your skin, you may consider trying out LED Light Therapy masks if you have the budget. With consistent use, they can help you achieve clearer, firmer, and more radiant skin without harsh treatments or costly spa visits. As skincare technology continues to advance, embracing LED Light Therapy is a step towards a brighter, healthier complexion.
