I have to disclose that when I first purchase Biotherm Life Plankton Mask, I seriously thought it was a rinse-off mask. The name did not reflect that it was an overnight mask and even after reading the description on the box where it mentioned that " apply to the whole face, as a leave-on mask in thin layer 1 ~ 2 times a week ", I still think that it was a rinse-off mask where it can also doubled up as an overnight mask.
Technically, a rinse-off mask is usually recommended to be used twice a week while an overnight mask can be used daily, so I still think that I was misled into buying an unnecessary overnight mask. I was elated when I first found this in Sephora, because being a Biotherm fan, I have been waiting for years for Biotherm to come up with their mask products. I love their moisturisers and the hydration that their products are able to provide for my skin. I know I can rely on them during overseas trips when my skin acts up, due to the weather conditions.
Packaging, Texture and Scent
Biotherm Life Plankton Mask is housed in a heavyweight clear blue glass jar with 75ml contents. It has a hydrogel consistency with a soothing and calming sensation that sinks into the skin, leaving a slightly velvety-smooth silicone feel. However, it stings on dehydrated or flaking areas as well as on freshly exfoliated skin which goes away after a very short while but this is not an experience which I enjoyed.
The signature Biotherm fragrance is distinct which I am used to, but if given a choice, I rather do without the fragrance as it does nothing beneficial for the skin. A good friend of mine actually like having fragrance in her products for the feel-good effect.
Performance
According to Biotherm, Life Plankton is their fermented ingredient, infused at its highest concentration for the first time ever, in an integral recovery treatment. Overnight, redness and tightness are soothed, skin bounce is recreated and healthy radiance re-ignited like never before.
A little goes a long way and since its recommended to be used 2 to 3 times a week, it actually took me 1 whole year to use up the entire product. I regard overnight masks as unnecessary products in my skincare regime when I am not travelling. For a country like Singapore with summer weather all year round, I don't like to layer too many products to provide hydration when my day or night cream can do it well. However, if you reside in countries with colder climate, an overnight mask is totally necessary, at least, as far as my skin type is concerned.
I have incorporate Biotherm Life Plankton Mask into my skincare regime in several ways :
1) As a rinse-off mask
I didn't feel that it makes a difference to my skin, before or after masking. Anyway, it is also not recommended to be used this way but I just wanted to test it out.
2) As a leave-on mask after Naruko Magnolia Brightening and Firming Lotion
It works well when I am sleeping in an air-conditioned room but the mask is not necessary on hot and warm nights. Just the moisturiser as the last step in my skincare regime will do.
3) As a moisturiser after The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 or Be Plain Cicaful Ampoule
The combination works fine on optimal skin ( read : sufficiently hydrated ) but not on dehydrated skin.
4) As a moisturiser after InstaNatural Pro-Radiant Skin Brightening Serum
Skin is parched and dry with insufficient moisture. It is understandable since an overnight mask cannot replace a good moisturiser.
5) As a spot treatment
I applied it on areas which are parched, like around my nose nostrils if I have flu and all those rubbing cause flakiness or on top of my make-up where there are slight flakiness on certain areas. As a spot treatment, it works pretty well.

Ingredients
The key ingredient for Biotherm Life Plankton Mask is Vitreocilla Ferment which is also found in La-Roche Posay products. Research study has demonstrated that Vitreocilla Ferment when grown on spa-enriched water, benefits chronic inflammatory skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, in which antioxidant, antibacterial and appropriate immune activities are important therapeutic strategies.
The product also contains Alcohol Denat ( 3rd in the list ) and Benzyl Alcohol which may cause dryness in the long term. The 4th ingredient is Dimethicone which may be pore-clogging for some users.
Do note that there are good and bad alcohols. Bad alcohols are methanol, isopropyl alcohol, propanol, benzyl alcohol, and SD alcohol (alcohol denat.) just to name a few. They are commonly used to make creams feel lighter, help other ingredients to penetrate your skin, and as a preservative, however, they can be extremely drying and irritating to skin, which may lead to inflammation because they strip the skin off of its natural protection. By breaking down the skin’s barrier, alcohols destroy the substances that protects your skin’s health over then long term. Although alcohols may feel good because they are light and make your skin not feel greasy but because it damages the skin barrier, it leads to increase of acne causing bacteria and makes inflammation worse. To sum it up, the mask is suitable for usage if the temperature is colder like when I am sleeping in an air-conditioned room or travelling during winter period. However, I would not repurchase due to the tingly effect which should not be there in the first place.
