Review for Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser
Product Description
This active yet gentle cleanser with 5% glycolic acid exfoliates to reveal a glowing, healthier-looking skintone. Mud deep cleans and detoxifies pores while hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and avocado oil plump and nourish the skin. Leaves complexion feeling smooth and purified.

I hardly ever use "acids" on my face - AHAs ( Glycolic, Lactic Acid, Mandelic Acid ) and BHAs ( Salicylic Acid, Citric Acid ), because of the fear of how it will react with sensitive skin like mine although I do come across lactic acid in my cleansers every now and then.

AHAs are primarily used for mild hyperpigmentation like age spots, melasma and scars, enlarged pores, fine lines and surface wrinkles and uneven skin tone. BHAs are primarily used for acne and sun damage. It dries out excess oils and dead skin cells to unclog pores.

I once tried diamond peel in a facial salon, at the insistence of the beautician who thinks she knows more about my skin than I do, and my skin peeled so badly a day after the super smooth skin. diamond peel treatment is a mechanical exfoliation technique similar to microdermabrasion. This noninvasive cosmetic procedure removes excess oil, dirt, and dead cells on the surface of the skin to reveal the younger, brighter skin cells underneath.

Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser is my very first cleanser with Glycolic Acid and I was wary of it. Glycolic Acid can be found in many chemical peels and is said to be even safe enough for sensitive skin. It is a naturally occurring substance derived from plants such as sugar cane, pineapple and sugar beets and is the holy grail for exfoliation, by effectively removing the outermost layer of dead cells from complexion, revealing brighter and fresher skin.

Do note that, use of other products containing Vitamin A, AHAs, Accutane ( acne medication ) can cause a reaction as the skin is already sensitized. And even though Vitamin C can be used together with acidic ingredients like Glycolic or Salicylic Acid, they can alter its pH which can reduce the effectiveness of your Vitamin C so it is recommended to use each on its own, in order to derive the best results.

Some retinol-only formulations may have a higher pH than a separate AHA/BHA-only type of topical product, and if combined, could lower the efficacy of the AHA/BHA hence it largely depends on the particular chemistry of the formulation.

As for me, I prefer to use Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser in the night twice a week, as you need to be diligent with sunscreen if you use it in the day, due to the skin's sensitivity to the sun. Since I use InstaNatural Pro Radiant Brightening Vitamin C Serum in the night, I will skip using that, if I am using Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser that night, as I noticed the tingling effect on my skin whenever I used both in the same night.

Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser Texture

The cleanser is brown in colour and has a gritty paste-like creamy texture that emulsifies into a light milky feel, once in contact with water. I was blown off by its performance on my first usage - it made my skin super smooth, something that a cleanser has never done before. Granted, Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser can also be known as an exfoliating cleanser.

Unfortunately, subsequent usages did not exhibit the same mind-blowing result as the first. However, it still kept the pores on my nose very clean - my blackheads were almost non-existent, each time I used it, although they still came back after a day or two.

I am also happy to report that my skin did not experience any tightness or taut sensation although I do experience very slight flakiness around my nostrils occasionally hence I make it a point to apply a hydrating moisturiser thereafter.

Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser scored 4.4 from 10 users on Makeupalley with 80% willing to repurchase it.

In conclusion, this product is a worthy buy if
- you have sensitive skin but will still like to try a gentle chemical exfoliation
- you want smoother skin and smaller pores
- you are new to chemical exfoliation
