[ Review ] Love from Yours Sunny Side Up Sunscreen Mist

Product Description
Love from Yours Sunny Side Up Sunscreen Mist is a water-based broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen mist that provides all-day protection from sun exposure and blue light. No white cast, no shine, no breakouts. Packed with high protection filters, Soliberine, Vitamin E and Swiss Buddleja flower extract which has anti-ageing and antioxidant properties.

I purchased Yours Sunny Side Up Sunscreen Mist and Yours Eye Love You Eye Serum sometime back, when it was still located in Singapore, however the brand has since closed their Singapore headquarters to focus on international expansion and they only ship products to United States and Australia now.

Sunscreen is designed to protect your skin from the sun’s most damaging UV rays––Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB). These rays are so harmful to your skin, exposure to them can lead to sunburn, pigmentation, wrinkles, early signs of ageing and even skin cancer. A sunscreen with a high SPF (30+) is effective at either absorbing, filtering out, or reflecting these UV rays away from your skin, so you can stay fresh, youthful and glowing.

For me, sunscreen mists are the easiest for re-application, although it might not be the best as one cannot really determine the coverage, however they are more hygienic than a sun stick or a sunscreen powder.

My last sunscreen mist was Somethinc HOLYSHIELD! UV Watery Sunscreen Shake Mist SPF46 PA++++ but it wasn't the best fit for me as the milky texture tends to leave whitish streaks on the face at times while Supergoop Antioxidant Infused Sunscreen Mist has a pretty strong alcohol scent and it has been discontinued.

Packaging, Scent and Texture

Love from Yours Sunny Side Up Sunscreen Mist is housed in a chirpy yellow bottle with 40ml contents and a mist dispenser. I adore the fine mist and how fuss-free it was, to spray on the face and just let it dry naturally for re-application during sunny days. There is a strong fragrance which I rather do without but the fragrance is less strong if I spray on the palms first and then spread out on face.

How To Use
1. Shake before spritzing.
2. Spray directly onto face (3-4 pumps). Hold Sunny Side Up half an arm’s length away from your face when spritzing and remember to keep your eyes and mouth closed! Alternatively, you can also choose to spray onto palms first before applying the lightweight SPF onto face.
3. Carry it with you for all-day sun protection. Reapply every 3 hours by misting over makeup.

Performance and Ingredients

While no sunscreen can block all UV rays, Sunny Side Up is a broad spectrum sunscreen mist that offers protection against 97% of UVA and UVB rays. A similar SPF50 sunscreen would add only 1-2% more protection than a SPF30 sunscreen. For daily urban wear, SPF30 provides effective all-day broad spectrum protection. Like any sunscreen, regular reapplication is essential to getting the most out of your sunscreen, and Sunny Side Up is recommended to be reapplied every three hours for the best results.

Free of Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates, SLS and BHS, Sunny Side Up Sunscreen Mist has a mist spray for easy application and for SPF touch ups on-the-go. The formula is so lightweight that it glides over makeup and won't leave you with a greasy shine.

I tend to use sunscreen mist as a sunscreen re-application and does not solely rely on it as it may be difficult to judge the coverage adequacy. As an additional layer of sunscreen protection, Love from Yours Sunny Side Up Sunscreen Mist was almost the perfect companion for me.

If you prefer to use it as your one and only sunscreen then I would recommend you to spray on the palms first and then spread it out on the face for the first layer of protection. Thereafter, spray generously on the face as the second layer of protection.

The texture is pretty runny and lightweight so it is quite spreadable. Do note that, there are droplets on the face after misting, so if you can't wait for it air-dry first, then pat them in. After air-dry, there is a subtle tackiness on the face.

At 40ml, the bottle is small and portable for a morning walk under the hot sun or before work lunchtime. I like the water-based alcohol-free formulation, the fine mist and how hassle-free it is, to spray and just let it dry naturally. There is no greasy shine, white cast or smudged makeup to worry about, although the droplets and the tackiness on the face can be annoying for some people.

However, based on the 3 UV filters, UVA protection seems to be lacking so hopefully they will improve on that aspect. Adding on, there are no manufacturing dates or expiry dates on the bottle and packaging although there is a batch code.

The key ingredients are...

Ultraviolet B Filters : PBSA and Uvinul MC80, powerful UVB absorbers

Ultraviolet A Filters : Uvinul A Plus Granular, helps prevent long-term skin damage

Buddleja AO Alpaflor : An anti-aging skin protectant that prevents UV damage

Soliberine : Prevents skin damage from UV rays

Vitamin E : Natural skin softening and smoothing agent

The 3 sunscreen filters are....

Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate : A new generation, chemical sunscreen agent with high UVA protection and high photostability. Also known as Uvinul A Plus.

Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid : Also known as Ensulizole, a chemical UVB filter which does a great job at neutralising them before they can wreak havoc on your skin.

Ensulizole protects skin from short UVA (UVA-2) but not long UVA (UVA-1) rays, hence you need to add at least one other UVA filter, like Avobenzone or Zinc Oxide, to the sunscreen to give it broad spectrum protection. However, the problem with most chemical UV filters is that they are super unstable and degrade quickly when exposed to sunlight.

Ensulizole fares better than most UV filters here as it doesn’t degrade much, according to this research study hence it may help other UV filters ( ie. Avobenzone ) from degrading.

Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate : Also known as Octinoxate or Octyl Methoxycinnamate, it is used in products that are applied to the skin to absorb, reflect or scatter UV rays; it protects the skin from sunburn and other damaging effects of the sun. Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate also protects cosmetics and personal care products from deterioration caused by UV rays and allows them to last longer in high UV conditions.

It is a chemical sun blocking agent that absorbs ultraviolet radiation in UVB range.
However, when Octinoxate is exposed to sunlight, "it is converted into a less UV absorbent form hence it is not very stable. This conversion can be partly prevented by certain other UV blockers, particularly bemotrizinol (Tinosorb M). Note that if Octinoxate combined with Avobenzone, it degrades even faster.

AQUA (WATER), DIETHYLAMINO HYDROXYBENZOYL HEXYL BENZOATE, ETHYLHEXYL METHOXYCINNAMATE, GLYCERIN, PROPANEDIOL, C12-15 ALKYL BENZOATE, PHENYLBENZIMIDAZOLE SULFONIC ACID, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, 1,2-HEXANEDIOL, BENTONITE, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, PARFUM (FRAGRANCE), INULIN LAURYL CARBAMATE, CAPRYLHYDROXAMIC ACID, TOCOPHEROL, BUDDLEJA OFFICINALIS FLOWER EXTRACT, CITRIC ACID, GLYCINE SOJA (SOYBEAN) OIL, BUDDLEJA DAVIDII EXTRACT, BHT, SODIUM BENZOATE, POTASSIUM SORBATE

Conclusion

To conclude, Love from Yours Sunny Side Up Sunscreen Mist has been a great companion as an additional layer of sunscreen protection with its fuss-free applicator that dispenses a fine mist that doesn't leave your face streaky, whitist or greasy, however the UVA protection seems slightly lacking.
