Mary & May Cica Soothing Sun Cream Review

Product Description
Mary & May Cica Soothing Sun Cream is a daily vegan moisturizing sunscreen with no white cast. It is a triple functioning sun cream with UV protection, brightening and wrinkle management.

This is only my 3rd product from the brand, after Mary & May Niacinamide + Chaenomeles Sinensis Serum and Mary & May CICA Houttuynia Tea Tree Calming Mask which weren't memorable.

I received Mary & May Cica Soothing Sun Cream from a Stylekorean collaboration last year. Trying Korean sunscreens has been a new hobby of mine, ever since their lightweight textures gained much traction on Instagram.

It is important to wear sunscreen to protect the skin from harmful UV rays, prevent sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer, on top of precenting premature aging and reducing the appearance of sun damage.

In Singapore, with its high humidity and hot sunny weather, it is not easy to find a lightweight mineral sunscreen that works beautifully on my combination-dehydration skin type so I am still using chemical sunscreens.

Packaging, Scent and Texture

Mary & May Cica Soothing Sun Cream is housed in a 50ml flat tube with a small nozzle that dispenses the white lightweight creamy texture effortlessly. The floral fragrance is strong so it might not be a hit for everyone. There is a subtle cooling sensation which dissipates after a short while.

How To Use
1. In the last step of skin care, take an appropriate amount of this product and spread evenly on the skin.
2. It is recommended to apply thickly on areas highly exposed to UV rays.

Performance and Ingredients

Mary & May Cica Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50 PA++++ is a reef-safe chemical sunscreen with 10,000ppm of F-CICA COMPLEX (7 Centella Asiatica derivatives fermented with yeast) for soothing effects. It offers skin-brightening and anti-aging effects and is fitted with SPF 50+ PA++++ for UV protection.

The F-CICA COMPLEX consists of 7 Centella Asiatica derivatives which are Centella Asiatica Extract, Centella Asiatica Root Extract, Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract, Asiaticoside, Madecassoside, Madecassic Acid and Asiatic Acid.

Mary & May Cica Soothing Sun Cream Texture

This chemical sunscreen has a lightweight fresh and non-sticky creamy texture with an immediate shine upon application that tones down after awhile. There is no white cast since it is not a mineral/physical sunscreen. Due to the shine, I prefer to pair it with makeup ( RMS Beauty "Un" Powder ) or Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder to mattify it so that I don't look that greasy.

That said, despite the sunscreen being touted as a soothing sun cream, it stings on dehydrated patches on my face.

The 4 sunscreen filters are...

Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate : A new generation, chemical sunscreen agent with high UVA protection and high photostability. Also known as Uvinul A Plus.

Ethylhexyl Triazone : A new generation, chemical sunscreen that gives the highest photo-stable absorption of all available UVB filters today. Also known as Octyl Triazone and Uvinul T 150.

Diethylhexyl Butamido Triazone : A chemical sunscreen agent that's very oil soluble and requires relatively low concentrations to achieve high SPF values. Particularly suitable for water-repellent and water-resistant formulations, it is super photostable where it loses 10% of its SPF protection abilities only in 25 hours when 2 hours counts already as "photostable" in the world of chemical sunscreens. Also known as Iscotrizinol.

Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol : Also known as Tinosorb M, this is a "hybrid" sunscreen meaning it's half-way between physical (the ones that, at least partly, reflect the sun) and chemical agents (that absorb the rays, which most sunscreens do).  It is a new generation UV filter and gives a nice broad-spectrum coverage (280-400 nm, meaning UVB as well as UVA protection) and is highly photostable. It can also help to stabilize other less stable sunscreens, like Octinoxate and work well with other UV-filters.

Conclusion

To conclude, Mary & May Cica Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50 PA++++ has a strong fragrance and an immediate shine upon use. The strong fragrance dissipates after a short while while the shine can be mattified with makeup. It has a lightweight fresh and non-sticky creamy texture.

That said, it stings on dehydrated patches on my face so it isn't the best fit for my skin type.
