What To Do With Skincare Products That Do Not Work?

What To Do With Skincare Products That Do Not Work

I use up 95% of my beauty products in general and while I do encourage one to empty products as much as you can, in a bid to reduce waste but I am also aware that not everyone is able to do that, either due to having too many products, short product expiry dates, sensitivity issues, allergic concerns, "meh" products or unsuitability.

Of course, no thanks to Marie Kondo who started the idea of getting rid of things that aren't useful and don't "spark joy" to become a cultural phenomenon.

Hence, I like to share What To Do With Skincare Products That Do Not Work, What To Do With Skincare Products You Don't Use and How To Use Up Skincare Products.

In brief, you can repurpose the product or pass it along to someone else but how do you do that? Lets delve down to the details, shall we?

Here are some ways to use products that don't work on your face.

11 Ways To Repurpose Skincare Products

1) Facial Wash
- Use it for reusable masks and makeup brushes/sponges or as a hand and body wash.

2) Toner
- Use it as a body mist when you are out in the scorching hot sun.

3) Serum
- Use it on the chest, arms, body, legs.

4) Moisturizers
- Use it on the decollete area, as a hand cream, foot cream, body cream or as a thick rinse-off mask.

5) Facial Oils
- Mix in with your body lotion or cream for an extra boost of moisture, use it on the nails, cuticles, hair, body or feet. Shave your legs after slathering with the oils.

6) Facial Scrub/ AHA/ BHA
- Use it on the body like a body scrub, or focus on the dry and flaky knees, elbows, feet and soles. Also acts as a hand/feet scrub before your manicure/pedicure.

7) Sunscreen
- Use it as a body sunscreen.

8) Lipbalm
- Use it as a nourishing balm on dry areas or itchy patches.

9) Sheet Mask
- Use it for the chest, arms, legs and feet.

10) Eye Cream
- Use it for the decollete area or as a hand cream

11) Overnight Mask
- Use it as a thick rinse-off mask

6 Places To Sell Your Extra Skincare Products

If you have purchased an expensive skincare product but it doesn't work well on your skin, you can
consider selling them to recoup some monetary loss especially if the products are brand new, swatched or lightly-used.

However, I suggest you to try to go back to the retail store to see if they can consider an exchange for another product which is more suitable for you, before selling it.

1) Carousell ( SG-based )

A marketplace to sell your products. Both desktop and mobile versions are available.

2) Beauty Pantry Marketplace ( SG-based )

Sell your beauty products on this telegram channel.

3) Reddit Skincare Exchange ( Mainly in the US )

4) Reddit Makeup Exchange ( Mainly in the US )

5) Reddit Asian Beauty Exchange ( Mainly in the US )

6) Glambot ( US-based )

1) Family and Friends

When I have a brand new or gently-used product which did not quite work out for me, I usually ask my sister or good friends to see if they will be keen. Cleansers would usually be "gifted" to my hubby since he has a more resilient skin. HAHA.

2) Decant for trials

Sometimes my good friends and I would decant products for one another to check out the suitability before investing in the full sizes. This helped to reduce waste and save money if the product is unsuitable.

3) Host a Skincare Swap

- Organise skincare swaps with some skincare fans, friends or colleagues.

- List on the "free items" category

6) Telegram Groups

6) Zero Waste Groups

With the recent "trends" towards minimalism and zero-waste lifestyles, there are now more people who do not mind pass-it-on products.

Ever since joining the facebook group "Journey To Zero Waste Group In Singapore", I am now more conscious of my waste and have learnt to embrace refuse-reduce-reuse-recycle concept in my daily life. I still have a long way to go when it comes to beauty because I love skincare too much but I try to improve in other ways - bringing reusable bags wherever I go, refuse single-use plastics, carry water bottle, repair spoilt products before buying a new one, etc.

Olio App ( SG-based and Global )

Download this free sharing app for free food and products. I have given plenty of products on the app and it always feel good to know someone else can utilize it better than you.

Freegood App ( SG-based )

Download free sharing app for products. I joined this app first, before trying out Olio app so you might want to take note that Freegood is of a smaller scale than Olio and its facebook page has not been too active for the past year however, there are still new members who give/request products on the app every week.

On both apps, I have given away plenty of beauty products which include used skincare and makeup products and I always made sure to describe the condition, expiry dates and quantity, etc
