Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 Review

Product Description
Developed in collaboration with Makeup Guru and Instagram Influencer Ash Deleon (@ashdeleon), this translucent non-nano mineral powder can be worn on its own or over makeup for a natural, flawless look. Easy to carry to reapply throughout the day for all day sun protection from harmful UVA/UVB rays. Enriched with Green Tea to help deliver vital antioxidants while Chamomile Flower Extract helps to soothe skin and Vitamin E contains antioxidants properties.

It has been 10 years since I last tried a Derma E product and I am so glad to snag the last Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder before it discontinued. I may have repurchase this product, if not for its poor packaging. My last sunscreen powder was Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 45.

Made in USA, Derma E is a clean beauty brand which is dermatologist recommended and sustainably minded to skin healthy, well-being and the natural environment.

Packaging, Scent and Texture

Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder is a 4g powder housed in a convenient brush applicator that is supposed to be travel-friendly but isn't so. Once you pulled off the cap, it is difficult to close it back again and you have to be careful whilst tucking in all the bristles to ensure they are all within the cap.

The cap also cracked after a few uses and once it cracked, it dropped off easily so it can be pretty annoying.

Unfortunately, I only realized there is an inner sleeve that one is supposed to slide up so that all the bristles stay intact, before you insert back the cap, ONLY after the cap cracked and I have decanted all the powder to another container. It was too late to appreciate the brush applicator then.

I have been looking for the usage instructions on packaging and on website but found none. A search on the other websites yield similar complaints as my initial ones, so I am not the only one who was frustrated on how to use it. I wish Derma E could have read the feedback and reverse the complaints.

How To Use :

1) Apply with brush liberally and evenly to face, neck, and decollete in a circular motion before sun exposure.
2) Reapply after every 2 to 3 hours for all day sun protection and a flawless beauty finish.

Performance and Ingredients

Derma E Sun Protection Powder Review

Cruelty-free and 100% Vegan, Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 is a mineral-based powder designed to provide broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Unlike traditional sunscreens, this product comes in a lightweight, finely milled powder form, making it incredibly versatile and convenient for everyday use. The mineral powder has no scent and the powder is smooth.

First Use : Simply pull off the cap, tap lightly to get the powder out, apply on the skin, pull up the inner sleeve, insert back the cap.

Second Use : Pull off the cap, pull down the inner sleeve, tap lightly to get the powder out, apply on the skin, pull up the inner sleeve, insert back the cap.

Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 Review

There was an inner sleeve where you can pull up to protect the brush bristles but it wasn't made known to users, it was neither on the packaging nor on the website. Hence, initially, it was a frustrating experience when one has to try manually push in all the bristles before putting the cap back which made it less fuss-free than intended.

Adding on, the cap cracked, making it loose and I dropped the whole product, scattering some of the powder all over the floor. I had to decant the powder to another container as the applicator was no longer viable.

I also cannot really tell when the powder is dispensed ( or how much is sufficient for adequate protection ) as the tint is almost similar to my skin colour ( and isn't obvious on the bristles ) so I can only gauge briefly as I use it on the face.

The powder blends seamlessly into the skin, leaving behind a natural finish. I like the mattifying effect on the face once applied, and it was perfect to use after liquid sunscreen which appeared greasy so that I can mattify the appearance. However, I also noticed my combination skin oils up by mid-day so the claim on the box that says "help to absorb excess oil" didn't work for me.

One of the standout aspects of this product is its versatility. You can apply it over your regular skincare routine or wear it alone for a "no-makeup" look. It's perfect for busy mornings when you need quick sun protection without the fuss. Its portability and ease of application make it a must-have for on-the-go individuals who need sun protection without the mess.

I prefer to use it like a loose powder, after my tinted sunscreen to act as an additional sun protection. Great for days when I am out in the sun for several hours.

The key ingredients are....

Non-nano Zinc Oxide : Helps to protect from UVA/UVB sun rays

Vitamin E : An antioxidant and anti-inflammatory oil that works to improve the moisture and texture of the skin.

Green Tea : May help reduce redness and inflammation while protecting the skin from environmental stressors.

Chamomile Flower Extract : Helps to calm and soothe sun-exposed skin while also improving skin health and increasing skin's natural glow.

Titanium Dioxide – 17.29%, Zinc Oxide – 20%
Camellia sinensis leaf extract, caprylic/capric triglyceride, capryloyl glycine, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, mica, potassium sorbate, silica, sodium benzoate, tocopherol, undecylenoyl glycine. May contain iron oxides (CI 77492, CI 77489).

Conclusion

To conclude, Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 is a versatile mineral-based powder that can be applied over your regular skincare routine or wear it alone for a "no-makeup" look. I prefer to use it as a loose powder, on top of my tinted sunscreen for additional sun protection.

It also forms part of my 5 prong approach to sun protection and pigmentation prevention where I will apply a sun stick followed by a regular sunscreen, tinted sunscreen, Derma E Sun Protection Mineral Powder SPF 30 and a layer of sunscreen mist if I need to be under the scorching sun for several hours.

Pretty sad that this product has discontinued. Which mineral-based sunscreen powder should I use next? This product is featured in my Top 20 Beauty Empties I Loved in 2023.
