Kiehl's Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner Review

Product Description
Beloved by Kiehl’s customers since the 1960s, this cult-classic alcohol-free Kiehl's Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner is formulated with Calendula, which contains 5 skin-soothing compounds known to help relieve signs of distressed skin including visible redness, excess oil and sensitive skin. The gentle formula is ideal for helping balance normal-to-oily skin, including sensitive skin types, for a more even complexion and soothed and refreshed-feeling skin.

This toner was a gift from the PR firm, on behalf of Kiehl's sometime back. I have been using this on an on-off basis as I was trying to gather my thoughts before sharing the review.

The role of toners in skincare has evolved significantly over the years. Once known for their astringent, alcohol-heavy formulas that left skin tight and dry, today’s toners are far more diverse—hydrating, soothing, exfoliating, or even essence-like in texture and function.

For those with dehydrated, sensitive, or combination skin, a well-formulated hydrating toner can help replenish moisture post-cleanse, prep the skin for better absorption of serums, and restore balance. On the other hand, if your cleanser is already gentle and your skincare routine is minimal, you might find toner unnecessary.

Lets delve to see if this toner is necessary in your skincare routine....

Packaging, Scent and Texture

Kiehl's Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner Texture

Kiehl's Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner is housed in a sturdy 250ml plastic bottle with a flick-top cap. It has a calming soothing sensation with a delicious honey-like scent. The calendula flower petals swirled prettily in the clear bottle.

Light yellow in colour, the contents are runny and can be applied on cotton pads or palms.

How To Use :
After cleansing your skin, moisten a sterile cotton pad with alcohol-free toner. and smooth on skin in areas where needed, avoiding the eye area.

Performance and Ingredients

Kiehl's Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner is said to gently soothes and refreshes the skin, relieving key signs of distressed skin including visible redness, excess oil and sensitive skin. It cleanses without harsh or synthetic drying agents and is suitable for normal-to-oily skin types, including sensitive skin as well as acne-prone skin.

Because of the runny contents, it is recommended to use it on cotton pads by the brand. With the soothing properties, I prefer to use the toner during irritated skin days. The soothing and calming sensation is much welcomed and comforts the skin but unfortunately, it neither hydrates nor reduce the redness.

The key ingredients are...

Calendula: Native to the Mediterranean, Calendula Extract and renewable Calendula Petals are known for their skin soothing properties. For many centuries, Calendula has been commonly used in skincare products and highly regarded in both Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine.

Allantoin: Allantoin is a compound found in the root of the comfrey plant, a hairy perennial Eurasian herb long used in herbal medicine. Allantoin is known to soothe and comfort skin.

Great Burdock Root: Great Burdock Root has been used for centuries to moisturise dry skin. Known for its soothing properties, Great Burdock Root is also believed to help reduce oil.

Aqua / Water, Propylene Glycol, Propanediol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Arctium Lappa Root Extract, Disodium Edta, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower, Hydrolyzed Corn Starch, Allantoin, Hedera Helix Extract - Ivy Leaf/Stem Extract, Glycerin, Althaea Officinalis Root Extract, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid

Conclusion

To conclude, Kiehl's Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner has a lovely honey-like scent and offers an instantly calming, soothing sensation on the skin and I personally reach for this toner on days when my skin feels irritated or stressed.

Although it provides a comforting feel and helps to soothe sensitivity, it doesn’t deliver much in terms of hydration or visible redness reduction. If you’re looking for a gentle, alcohol-free toner to calm the skin without expecting deep hydration, this could be a nice addition to your routine—but it may not be essential for everyone.
