Bulk Source Foods Lavender Ylang Ylang Shampoo Review

Product Description
Lavender Ylang Ylang Shampoo is a plant-based shampoo consisting of a gentle combination of certified organic safflower and jojoba oils with biodynamic avocado and macadamia oils, mixed with an organic botanical blend of flowers and herbs. Essential oils of ylang ylang and lavender add a subtle, natural aroma.

All these wonderful plant oils and extracts clean and nourish without stripping the natural oils from the hair and scalp. Toxin-free and biodegradable, safe for grey-water or septic systems, vegan friendly and contains no phosphate, SLS, SLES, PEG's, parabens, mineral oils, DEA or palm oil.

I have been shopping at zero-waste stores for a while and its time to look into their body care products. I have previously reviewed Scoop Wholefoods Acai and Maqui Berry Body Scrub and this time, its a shampoo at another zero waste store - Bulk Source Foods.

With roots in Byron Bay, the Source Bulk Foods was born in 2012 from the belief that unpackaged food should be easier to access and a smaller carbon footprint could be achieved every time one shops. You can check out their products from their website so that you can plan the type of bottles and jars to bring along for your next trip.

Packaging, Scent and Texture

I brought along an empty travel-sized bottle which I purchased from Muji for my travelling needs. The 100ml size is just ideal for me to try out a new product and at Bulk Source Foods, the shampoo costs $4.50 per 100ml.

The scent of Lavender Ylang Ylang is so calming and soothing which is so much needed in today's stressful lives. It lathers well with moderate suds.

Performance and Ingredients

Blended to provide a natural hair and scalp tonic, the Lavender and Ylang Ylang shampoo leaves hair clean without stripping it of its natural oils. Designed to cleanse and add nourishment to the scalp, it is also formulated to have a balancing effect on your hair, returning it to its natural healthy condition. Lavender oil is gentle, aromatic and is used to calm the nervous system.

When I started using this shampoo, I actually enjoyed using it as it smells good and is gentle for the hair. Thereafter, I switched shampoos for a month and when I returned back to using it, it no longer worked that well.

The shampoo was drying and the lathering experience wasn't great, my hair was weakened and several strands came off during rinsing as well as when it was air-dried. I had to add Eloise Gold Crystal Hair Repair Treatment as a pre-shampoo treatment to soften the hair before using this shampoo so as to prevent clumping and lesser hair fall.

Adding on, the shampoo was mild and gentle, leading to oily hair occasionally, if I skipped a day of hair washing.

Here's the list of ingredients....

Purified water, certified organic botanical blend of lavender, marigold, rosehip, burdock chamomile, horsetail (herb) organic safflower oil, biodynamic avocado oil, biodynamic macadamia oil, grapefruit seed extract Australian bush extracts of kakadu plum, decyl glycoside (sugar derivative), alpha olefine, aloe vera soy lecithin, organic jojoba oil, organic locust bean gum, guar gum, olive leaf extract, potassium sorbate, vanilla extract, almond extract, sea salt, citrus seed extract, lavender essential oil, ylang ylang essential oil.

Conclusion

To conclude, Bulk Source Foods Lavender Ylang Ylang Shampoo wasn't a good fit for my hair type. It left my hair dry and slightly clumpy with hair fall. Not a repurchase!

It was a shame as I really like the ingredients.
