I first heard about Skylake while researching for my Korea trip late last year and came to know about their hair tonic but unfortunately, I did not manage to find the shop. Back in Singapore, I realized Hebeloft carries their brand of products and subsequently purchased their hair products and added a box of the whitening mask into my purchase cart as well.
I have a soft spot for hanbang skincare where hanbang refers to traditional Korean medicine and hanbang skincare simply refers to using those ingredients and preparation methods to enhance products to treat and maintain our complexion.
Many hanbang brands make a point of preparing their ingredients using traditional methods of aging or fermentation. Like Su:m37’s complex herbal formulations rely heavily on fermentation, for which the brand is known for, Skylake prepares their 18 main ingredients by boiling for 72 hours before maturing and fermenting them for 90 days. If you are visiting Korea, you can consider dropping by their cosmetic cafe where you get to learn to make cosmetic products, using their famed tonic water.
Examples of hanbang brands and products include Sulwhasoo, Su:m37, Hanyul, Sooryehan, Acwell, Eclado, and Missha’s Geumseul and Cho Gong Jin lines.
Inspired by the power of oriental herbs and family’s secret formula for generations, Mdm Mi-Ja Seo, CEO of Skylake Korea, created the patented SKYLAKE oriental herbal extract, the signature ingredient in SKYLAKE’s many best-selling products, to soothe, hydrate and empower skin’s natural healing abilities to renew its appearance.
Containing only natural ingredients with no chemical preservatives, the patented SKYLAKE oriental herbal extract is formulated with 18 types of domestically-grown oriental herbs, carefully produced through various stages of natural fermentation and extraction processes before integrating with other functional ingredients. SKYLAKE skincare products meet the ISO9001 management standard and obtained the US FDA safety certification. This assures you of a high degree of confidence in product quality and reliability. You can read more about the brand here.
Made in Korea, all 5 sheets of Skylake Herbal Mask Pack ( Brightening Care ) are individually packed with each mask sheet folded neatly in its packaging. The herbal scent was pretty strong and lingered throughout the 30 minutes masking session. While some may find the scent off-putting, I found it to be rather calming and soothing.
I was initially upset when I saw the old box ( meaning the box has been kept for quite awhile ) and that the expiry would be in 4 months time. Of course it isn't too difficult to use the masks within 4 months since there are only 5 sheets in the box but then I usually don't use my products right away as I follow the FIFO ( first-in first-out ) policy where I tend to use products which I purchased first.
However, after using all the 5 mask sheets, I like it so much that I subsequently purchased the other variants - elastic and pimple ( even though I don't have acne issues but it states that they can be used for sensitive skin too, so why not ).
The material of the mask is of medium thickness and is sturdy. There was a slight itch for 1 - 2 minutes during masking but it went away shortly. Do note that on the box packaging, the recommended timing for masking is 15 - 20 minutes ( printed in English ) while the timing stated on the individual sheet mask packing is 30 - 40 minutes ( printed in Korean ). I wondered if the instruction has been wrongly translated. Nonetheless, I have used it for 20 minutes as well as 30 minutes.
The extra 10 minutes do not really make much difference, as the mask is still moist however, occasionally there was a subtle tightening sensation which I don't fancy but is still bearable. I presume it could be due to my skin being a little dehydrated on that day.
The astounding difference is when I removed the mask. Bright, glowing skin. Pores looked much smaller and skin is smoother to the touch. Even when I had only 2 hours of sleep that night, my skin still looked fresh and glowy the following morning. I'm amazed!
My make-up also goes on more smoothly the following morning, giving my skin a natural radiant glow without any need for highlighter. A friend whom I have not met in months, even asked me what I have been using for my skin, to be looking so good! That was the best compliment of the day.
In terms of ingredients, the key ingredient is Skylake Oriental Herb Water which consists of several chinese traditional medicine herbs which you can refer to the first row of ingredients in the list
below.
It is made with 18 natural ingredients which are distilled in-house. The ingredients include cnidium and angelica root, which are said to be good for blood circulation and balance, poria cocos, which is known for its moisturizing and immune system aiding effect, chestnut, which supports oil control and pore contraction, mint and licorice, plum and kelp. These ingredients are known to discharge toxins and soothe, whiten and tighten the skin. At SKYLAKE this kind of water replaces the distilled water that other brands use.
According to research study here and here, Angelica Gigas Extract and Angelica Dahurica Root Extract have exhibited great whitening capabilities while Artemisia Absinthium Extract ( also known as Mugwort ) has soothing and inflammatory properties for skin.
