Review : Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30+

Sunblock
Product Description
Sunshine Go Away Today... And it will with DeVita's feather-light, never heavy, oily or greasy mineral sun screen. It's hard to believe that our all-natural mineral sun screen is a light moisturizer and sun screen all in one - but it is! DeVita's exclusive formulation is created specifically for those sensitive to breakouts.
This moisturizer is light enough to wear under make-up, and absorbs quickly. Offering broad spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection with a SPF of 30+. Safe for adults and children, plus reef friendly too. Titanium Dioxide Free.

A new brand in my radar comes this DeVita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30+ which I purchased from Iherb for US$20.40. Good for 24 months once opened, I have been using it on-off for the past 11 months, not that 75ml is alot but rather, the texture has been quite a disappointment.

It has a high concentration level of 19% zinc oxide which offers pretty good protection against UVA and UVB rays. 100% vegan and paraben free, this product is also considered gluten sensitive safe and there is no nano technology involved.

Housed in a white opaque tube, it dispenses the contents through a small gap via some light depression. The texture of the white moisturizer may seems light but actually requires much blending in order to get it absorbed into the skin.

What irks me, is that it balls up and produces mini round balls during rubbing which is inevitable when I try to blend it on skin, so I stopped using it as a moisturizer. The flakes just get all over my skin and I have to spend more time trying to remove those balls from my skin which is totally annoying! On top of that, it is not exactly hydrating (despite containing Hyaluronic Acid) and feels heavy on face so I have been using it as a body moisturizer instead, applying on the neck, arms and hands. However, it doesn't meant that the issue disappeared, just that I need to apply it before dressing up, because the tiny white balls tend to fall over my clothes making it a messy affair.

I was looking for a body sunscreen which I use on the arms on a daily basis and chanced upon this on Iherb with glowing reviews. Quote OKI787 to get up to US$10 off your first order.

Housed in an opaque tube, the contents with a flick-top cap are dispensed easily with some depression on the pliable tube.
Made in the USA, the texture of the sunscreen is smooth with a whipped cream feel, without any unpleasant scent. However, at times, there are tiny white lumps during application which requires thorough blending and an oily residue that oozes out from the tube.
It is definitely not suitable for the face because of the white flakes that can be frustrating during application.

In terms of ingredients, it contains aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (a stable vitamin C derivative) and rosehip oil.
Containing a high percentage of zinc oxide, it protects against UVA and UVB rays. However it also contains Retinyl Palmitate, a form of Vitamin A which is said to be photosensitive and linked to skin cancer and tumour growth.

The product scored 3.4 from 114 users on Makeupalley.

According to Paula, here's her summary :

Pros:
  • Contains beneficial antioxidants and skin-identical ingredients.
  • Contains 19% zinc oxide, which in a properly labeled product should provide broad-spectrum protection.
Cons:
  • No Drug Facts Label, so you can't be sure if it's passed FDA-required testing and rated to provide broad-spectrum protection.
  • Questionable and inadequate preservative system.
  • Ingredient label doesn't comply with FDA or (global) INCI cosmetics regulations, so you really don't know what you are putting on your face.
