I received a complimentary Himalaya Lip Balm + DIY Lip Scrub from The Sample Store late last year. The Sample Store is an online site where consumers like us, can experience products and services at the comfort of our own home, for a nominal fee or sometimes, it can even be free. You can sign up for an account using my link here.

I have dry lips and it gets worse if I am in an air-conditioned office the whole day, hence lip balm is an important arsenal in my self care kit, to keep my lips looking good.

In this kit, provided by The Sample Store, there is a sugar scrub provided and a set of instructions on how to use it together with Himalaya Lip Balm. You can also follow the exact steps at home, since sugar is widely available.

Step 1 : Mix some lip balm and sugar together using 2 : 1 ratio
Step 2 : Gently apply mixture on lips and massage in a circular motion
Step 3 : Focus on all corners of lips and wipe off after 30 seconds
Step 4 : Keep lips soft with Himalaya lip balm after scrub treatment

I was quite surprised on how easy it is to mix the lip balm together with the sugar which then becomes a lip exfoliant. A great natural alternative and also easy on the pockets! You save on buying a lip scrub!

My lips is left feeling baby smooth after each exfoliation and adding on the lip balm makes my lips looked much better and also more presentable.

Himalaya Lip Balm comes in a tube form with a slope tip which makes lips application on-the-go easy and convenient. It has a fruity strong scent with a vaseline-like texture that looks sticky and greasy, however, once applied after the exfoliation, it moisturises my lips with a glossy and moist outlook.

In terms of ingredients, Petrolatum and Mineral Oil are the first and second ingredients in the list. Note that there are some people who may be allergic to Petrolatum, an oil byproduct that may contain carcinogens ( depending on the company's refining process ) so beware.

Petroleum jelly is water-repellent and seals your pores so moisture can't get in or out. Like Petrolatum, mineral oil coats your skin with a plastic-like layer and prevents it from breathing. When used repeatedly, it also can cause more severe problems as it's derived from petroleum and may contain cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This can cause the skin to age prematurely.

Do note that, there are controversial studies of the inclusion of Petrolatum in skincare products.

Vaseline, a brand name of Petroleum Jelly has been sold since 1870s and doctors have been recommending petroleum jelly for more than 100 years. In industry, petrolatum acts as a lubricant for machinery. Today, we also use it to relieve diaper rash, heal cuts and burns and soothe chapped lips. It’s also an ingredient in a variety of moisturizing products.

Health Canada considers petrolatum non-toxic. As for the Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CCTFA), a trade organization that consults with the government on ingredients, its stand is that ‘it’s pretty much as universally safe as any substance could possibly be,’ says spokesperson Mike Patton. However, the EWG, a U.S. non-profit organization that does environmental and safety studies, gives it a ‘moderate hazard’ safety rating, and says cosmetics that use petrolatum need more study for safety.

The EWG says’and governments and the CCTFA acknowledge’there is a risk of contamination from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), cancer-causing chemicals found in crude oil and its by-products. While no studies have ever shown a direct link between petrolatum and cancer, the European Union put numerous grades of petrolatum on a list of dangerous substances. Only highly refined petrolatum can be used in cosmetics there.

If you are not too overly concerned over these ingredients, Himalaya Lip Balm is actually a pretty affordable product which works well.
